Same size bolt pattern, ~ 25.4mm center hole to center hole; 3mm screws on both.

That means you could fit a 1717 motor to the mini E-Revo tenbol mount. A motor that weighs more than the car? I don't see a problem with that! :)

Aren't the screws on the 1717 4mm?

NickRummy 03.20.2010 07:47 AM

They are 4mm on mine. Thought they were 3mm too like listed in the specs but they arent. Atl least the older ones arent.

Thomas Porfert 03.20.2010 12:54 PM

I'll have to double check a production motor on Monday. I was measuring a prototype motor in engineering, so it may have changed before it hit production. I was thinking 3mm seemed a bit small for that size motor, but I'll verify on Monday; sorry for the confusion.

How does the 1520 compare to the 1717 in terms of torque? It's a bit longer, does that mean more torque? Or is that a matter of diameter?

I'm gonna dump the 2200 out of the Flux and get a 1520, just enough room to mount it and the diameter is the same. I'd have to make a new mount for the 1717.

Will it suck on 4S?

nuz69 04.02.2010 07:05 PM

It will suck on 4S if you dont gear up a lot. The 1717 rotor is larger, therefore magnetic forces are stronger, and it has more torque than the 1520, but it draws a little more amp than the 1520 (less runtimes).

Urgeoner 04.03.2010 11:47 AM

Geeze. I've had this motor sitting around for about 4 months now all because the shaft was too big. It's going into a Muggy. Has anyone received their mailers yet or is it still being decided on what route to take to correct this? Should I just opt for a 1520 instead?

They said they may be available this month. Don't know if they have decided how replacement will be handled but you will probably be contacted anyway when they figure it out if your name is on the list.

Duster_360 04.03.2010 02:25 PM

I was contacted after I was placed on the list - basically to confirm details, been a few weeks ago, nothing since.

Bondonutz 04.03.2010 07:12 PM

I called about 8-9 days ago to inquire about something else and asked about the 1717 5mm rotor also, I was told that they will be availible this month. When this month, DK ?

when i called no one knew what i was talking about, they took my number and told me someone was going to call me back.......... its been about 2 weeks and no one has called, i guess its a good thing i didn't hold my breath

Hyperthetical question:

If you knew that Castle would replace your 6mm rotors regardless ( their error/ omission on the original listing ), would more of you be inclinded to have a go at grinding the shafts down from 6mm > 5mm ( all thats required is a vice/lathe & a dremel/file afterall, and it has been done by a few guys already with great success )?

Given the choice/dilemma I'd grind those shafts baby- 4 months is a long time to sit around whining about something you could fix is less than an hour with basic hand tools & little chance of messing it up ( little by little, check with calipers and/ or the pinion until it fits snuggly ).

the only reason i havent is because i have bad luck and i know it would quickly fail for some unearthly reason and i would have to buy a new rotor for an ungoddly amount and then i would have a taste of the power so i would do it all again only to have the same luck..................... as you can see i have owned alot of mazdas

Anyone here think that the 1520 would be better in the muggy? it is more efficient with power than the 1717?

It'll have no less power and fit better than the 1717

alot of guys use the 1515 2.5d in the muggy im sure a much more powerfull 1520 would be enuff

but if your going to go big why not go all the way and use the 1717

After getting my gear ratio more reasonable with Mike's new stealth 68t mod .8 plastic slipperential spur and 15t pinion. I ran my 1717 13.5lb savage last night on Terra-pins for 18min of speed runs up to 45-50mph, wheelies, and jumps on pavement. It only used up 4.5ah at 23v.(avg. of 250mah/min) The 1717 was a sizzling 110*f. My 1520 in a 12lb rc8t used 357mah/min. Not really Apples to Apples but it's something. I made a graph of my findings.

The graph is GENIOUS!! :mdr: You must have spent countless minutes, nah! years designing the software and carefully planing the mathmatics to calculate something so precise and profound!! :yipi:

bruce750i 04.08.2010 02:58 PM

Yes, as you can clearly see the fun of the 1717 peaks a litter higher than the 1520.

Edit:It was a 65t not a 68t as stated above.

Urgeoner 04.08.2010 05:28 PM

lmao Bruce:lol:
Great graph!

Not sure. I guess after reading that it will need more voltage (at least 5s-6s) than the 1520 to perform well.. Or did I read wrong?
Whatever though I'll keep it anyway. I just have so much on my plate atm like bills and crap that affording a descent 6s battery will have to wait.

RuthlessLST 04.08.2010 07:36 PM

If anyone wants to sell a 1717 they have been sitting on... shoot me a PM.

i am very prone to screwing stuff up when it comes to making my own mods on stuff, especially motors, batteries, electronics, etc.

when i was still trying to use KB motors (6mm shaft) on my attempted BL savage conversion, i ground the shafts down to 5mm myself. all i did was secure the motor with my left hand on a table and the dremel in my right hand. i hooked it up to my esc and my radio system and used throttle trim to get the motor spinning at a fairly low speed. i just kept grinding the shaft as evenly as i could until a standard 5mm pinion fit snugly. this little task is pretty hard to screw up and long as you try to grind evenly and check the size often.

Are you kidding me!! I built a truck around this motor and now it’s just sitting collecting dust.

So now my question is...If you turn the shaft down to use the motors and burn it up, can we get replacement parts NOW or are we stuck waiting months or years?

That raises another question...Since most of these motors have been sitting in boxes using up the warranties how is Castle Creations going to handle a future warranty issue?

Sorry but this is really ticking me off!!! :diablo:

Gents,

I have in my hands a limited number of 1717 rotors with the 5mm shaft. I currently have 6 people on the list. Those 6 gents will be getting e-mails in a few minutes. If you do not receive an e-mail, it means I do not have you on the list. If you need one, please shoot me an e-mail at thomas (at) castle creations (dot) com. Sorry for the delay, but hopefully we have enough right now to cover everyone. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Does anybody know when the 1717s on backorder from Horizon will be available? I've had one on order for a few weeks. Also, is it going to be the 5mm or 6mm rotor (not that it matters). Thanks!
