Looking forward to hear your opinion on the Savöx servo.

But why the h*** are the air receiver so much cheaper than the ground receivers?

suicideneil 05.27.2010 05:47 PM

Cheers guys. Im all for improved X-brace strength, I think I've gotten some good ideas from this place recently. On the rx front- I know, crazy isnt it? Since 2.4ghz is 2.4ghz regardless of whether its for air or ground use ( no frequency/ legal issues to worry about ) it might well be worth guys looking into the airplane specific rxs for use with their car txs- dunno if they will be compitible but it shouldnt be hard to check.

I have the rx and sleeving so far, just waiting on the shrink & servo- tomorrow probably ( which is handy since its my day off ).

JoFreak 05.27.2010 06:15 PM

Please tell me more about the improved x-braces, because I see bent braces in my near future as well...

As for the rx, they really are a lot cheaper, NIB from a regular shop at least.
My last SR3100 "like new" from ebay.com cost me only about half of what it regularly costs here.
But as for compatibility, not so sure about it.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if spektrum put some kind of software barrier on their systems to prevent that. Maybe we/I should just as Spektrum about that.

Been kinda hecktic at work lately, working alot of extra hours due to other staff being off sick ( kidney stones, ouch ) + nearing the end of term when its always busier, so didnt get around to installing & photographing the last round of upgrades. Until now...

A few randoms aswell- just incase you couldnt tell I made myself an awesome lightbox... using 3 old white bath towels , then played with the exposure times to get a near-perfect white background, very little re-touching required. Turned out beautifully, though I think I will invest 5 squid and buy a large white bedsheet to get a smoother/ larger background for the more extreme angles. I also have some days off now so I can test that steering servo out, see if its a worthy upgrade to the dual 645mgs I've ran for so long...

swiftneed 06.25.2010 09:10 PM

:intello:Awesome

suicideneil 09.01.2010 09:11 PM

Indeed :mdr:

Had a bit of fun testing my 'new' Savox steering servo in the carpark:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cMwBvZl003E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cMwBvZl003E?fs=1&amp;hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMwBvZl003E

( Best viewed @ 480p & in full screen- turn the sound up too )

I was planning on testing my tamiya madbull but alas, the crummy AM radio and flakey nimh pack werent playing ball; so I broke the G out instead. The run ended early because the slipper nut backed itself off, but the servo is a little beast for ~$75 ( 20KG @ 6v ), hoping to test it on grass if the weather holds out for a few more days.

magman 09.01.2010 09:46 PM

looks great Neil..well done. Love the low sleek look. With the low cog it must handle quite well

freeagent 09.02.2010 12:14 PM

Nice truck man, I really like how it moves

Vic 09.04.2010 04:05 PM

Where did you buy these aluminum parts?

suicideneil 09.04.2010 09:47 PM

Here, there, everywhere....

Hey Serum!

Yeah, my cameraman can hold the picture steady almost like a tripod...

ANGRY-ALIEN 09.05.2010 01:11 PM

Wow... your truck just gets better and better over the years Neil... long live the Maxx ...

suicideneil 10.05.2010 06:33 PM

Like alot of guys I purchased a NeuCastle 1518 1800kv motor when they were on sale, and it arrived today; here it is compared to the Gmaxx's existing MedusaResearch 36-80-2000kv motor:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/178.jpg

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/179.jpg

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/180.jpg

Just got to trim the wires down and solder on some 5.5mm bullets, then figure out my gearing- gonna gear up to compensate for the slightly lower kv rating & to make use of all that tasty power on tap; nearly dwarfs the Medusa..

ZippyBasher 10.05.2010 06:37 PM

LOL, You think that is being dwarfed. I had a Medusa 36-70-1600 and Bought the 1520! Now that is seriously dwarfed. I will post up some pics in my thread later on and link ya... To think we paid half the price for the CCNeu; that a Medusa had cost us.

suicideneil 10.05.2010 06:41 PM

 True & true.

Everyone was so excited about the Medusas, myself included- Neu Quality at ~half the price. Now they are all but extinct and Castle have taken over the reigns of Neu quality motors at... well, 2/3 the price ish; cant say no to a bargain- the sale Castle had is just the icing on the cake

JoFreak 10.06.2010 09:47 AM

You will like that motor in your truck!
I know because I love that motor in my truck:lol:
Let me know once you find a gear ratio that works for you (together with a final gear ratio of the whole truck), because I'm still looking to find the sweet spot with that motor.

And by any chance, do you have an idea what it would do to the steering of an e-maxx if one would place the steering posts 5mm further back in the chassis?

suicideneil 10.06.2010 10:24 AM

Will do- I have the weekend off so hopefully it'll stay dry.

I think moving the steering posts wont hurt anything as such- you'll just have to tweak the turnbuckle lengths as it will create a bit of toe-out otherwise, but not much.

JoFreak 10.06.2010 09:36 PM

Well, I'm not sure if it won't hurt anything.
If the posts are further back, the toe links run at a steeper angle to the steering linkage.
Try to imagine if you were to turn right, for example, the right toe link might collide with the inner side of the rim, you know what I mean?
That's what I'm worried about.
Don't want to waste that gorillamaxx skidplate by drilling "wrong" holes into it.

Kcaz25 10.06.2010 11:36 PM

Looks great Neil!! Thats a big motor. It never occurred to me that the Neu design diameter was 3mm bigger.

Hmm, good point. I suppose it would depend on the amount of clearance there now at full lock, and whether you use offset rims etc. You could always do a mock-up using some stiff card or scrap of thin plastic, just to get an idea..

And the rest  The can itself is 39.98mm, but with the fins its 41.78mm. I did some late-night soldering last night and fitted the 5.5mm bullets & mounted the motor- I still have a fair amount of adjustment before the motor hits the tranny case, but it is noticably less than with the 36mm diameter Medusa. Also, I had my largest pinion ( 24tooth mod 0.8 ) fitted already it seems + a 70tooth spur, so I will dig through my parts tubs and see what smaller spurs I have in order to gear up; currently its 34mph according to the calculator. 64/24 will be better, but 58/24 will give me 40mph again- we will see what I've got & what will fit/ mesh...

Kcaz25 10.07.2010 03:21 PM

So its 36 vs 40 really.

Jofreak: my chassis from HCR comes standard from the factory with steering post farther back than 5mm. It really works out well to help the turnbuckles from missing the shocks or shock screws.

Although you should probably carry this conversation elsewhere. Like your thread.

I would agree, but last time I tried that, I didn't get any reactions at all

Sounds good!
I want this space for supporting the lower front suspension arm in the rear part of the arm. Because this is the only weak link left on the truck.

suicideneil 10.07.2010 05:36 PM

Bleh, just been playing with my spurgear collection to see what will fit & mesh- stuck 24/64 on there at the moment but I hate this stupid 3906 slipper mech. So....

27tooth pinion*
HotRacing double-up slipper mech
7075 hard anodized slipper pads ( x2 sets of 3 pads )

I still have the modified input shaft parts from the failed first attempt at using the 3905 spec slipper; with these upgraded slipper parts it should work just fine this time around- no traxxas monkey-metal to fail.

If it is sunny this weekend I think the Madbull will get an outting instead as I have no faith in the slipper on the Gmaxx holding- middle of my 70tooth spur is a bit melted from the carpark video...

*I would normally always get my pinions from Mike, but International shipping rates for just one ~$10 pinion is too much on this occasion..

JoFreak 10.07.2010 05:45 PM

Yeah, tried to tell him that he should introduce a cheap shipping option into his shop so we non-US guys could order small stuff from him without paying 30$ shipping for a 10$ pinion and stuff like that.
Sadly never got a reply to that:neutral:

I'm a little puzzled that you're still holding on to that fragile gear box from traxxas.
Is there a reason you haven't switched to a CD-directdrive?

suicideneil 10.07.2010 06:17 PM

I know, the RC-Monster CD unit would work perfectly and its a good price, just havent really gotten around to it- the GorillaMaxx chassis rails need replacing with something more sturdy that incorporates a CD unit / motor mount too, rather like:

http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19388

but tied to the chassis rails & bottom plate. Im gonna let the Candyman finish his current project though & do his Emaxx 'Razor back' chassis & see what I can come up with. Wont be anything too radical, mainly beefy & symetrical- long time before that happens though so I'll carry on with the old tranny ( ) for a while yet..

I agree... You could even update to a Ofna spool if you aren't looking for the center diff action.

I'm going this route on my Revo and Emaxx eventually.

JoFreak 10.07.2010 07:58 PM

You got a link to that spool for me? I'm looking for one, since I'm thinking about racing my gmaxx next year. But to be alowed in the MT-class you must not have a CD.

@neil:
Shouldn't be to hard to design a part that connects chassis and rails.
Only thing that might be interesting is if you wanted to use Mike's slipperential and there for would require space for a 46T mod1 spur at minimum.
But even that could be done with a little thinking.

Sure thing: http://www.nitrohouse.com/catalog/pr...ducts_id=11016

Uses the Ofna 51T spurs.

Kcaz25 10.18.2010 07:57 PM

Hey Neil can you post the length of those 8b shocks? I bought those Duh towers from River. Do you think they would work? I really don't want to buy 8 of them, nor do I want the extra weight.

I'm thinking about these as well: CLICK

Or these CLICK

suicideneil 10.18.2010 08:23 PM

Hole to hole ( center to center ) they are 95mm long, so the HB shocks would be quite tasty if they arent too fat, not sure on the others as they dont list the length that I can see.

Rivermaxx 10.19.2010 09:57 AM

Have you tried a strobe slipper with sprong yet with high temp pads?

suicideneil 10.19.2010 11:33 AM

Who, me?

Nah, even when someone is selling everything you need in one lot, getting spares the rest of the time is difficult- I need to test this beefed up 3905 slipper I've fitted still, but it seems nice & strong- didnt snap when I tightend it up so thats a good start

Rivermaxx 10.19.2010 11:59 AM

Yes. I like to know your result from that slipper and aluminum pads. This strobe set up is ideal but it wont fit on my newer trans. What spares do you need except pads which I was including and never wear out anyway if its adjusted right.

suicideneil 10.19.2010 01:49 PM

Just to bring things upto date:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/181.jpg

Stock 3908 aint got sh!t on this baby..

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/182.jpg

27/62 for 45mph on 5s lipo.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/183.jpg

Forgot to take a picture when I was assembling it, but you can see the 6 metal slipper pads in there- they aint gonna crumble apart in a hurry.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/184.jpg

Got myself a nice Turnigy neckstrap/ lanyard for £5- balance of the controller is perfect so it stays near enough level when you take your hands away

Chadworkz 10.24.2010 12:58 AM

Just so you guys know, I have quite a few Ofna Solid Center Drives with plastic and steel spurs (Ofna or UE), Ofna Solid Center "Slipper" Drives with plastic and steel spurs (Ofna or UE), and Strobe Slippers, Strobe Sprongs, Standard Pads & Peek (high-temp) Pads, and Ofna or UE Plastic or Steel Spurs...all NIP!

drw 10.28.2010 12:53 PM

How do you like the 1518,i just put that on my 3905,like it real well .lot more controllable over my 1515.i have mine geared 62/24.want to try a 27

suicideneil 10.28.2010 01:22 PM

Havent tried it yet actually, been having way too much fun beating my Tamiya Mad bull to pieces- the horrid autumn weather doesnt really lend itself to running the larger trucks, but the little buggy is loads of fun in the leaves and on the slippery grass/ tarmac.

I really enjoyed my 1518 in my Maxx geared 22/62 on 4s. I did try 6s a few times and its just too insane...
