And a couple more.
All I did to fix it up was extend the rather short motors wires back out to stock length ( I finally mastered butt jointing wires, looks so much neater than my usual efforts), and re-instate the battery leads for dual pack operation; no plugs on there, but hopefully the future new owener will prefer to choose their own regardless, and solder them on. Fun times ahead though, as in about 3 weeks we break up for summer leave, so I have a month or so of free time to play with my truck, good job I have so many batts now that can be charged in only an hour or so each... |

I went to the park today, and I did this:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/113.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/114.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/115.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/116.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...laMaxx/117.jpg Basically, about 10 minutes into the first (and only) run, I was trying to max out the throttle, which was probably a bad idea. As I gently applied more throttle, I maxed out the motor rpms, and thought the truck would stay on all 4 wheels... or so I thought. Just as the truck went past infront of me, the front end suddenly lifted, and before I could hit the brakes, it was cartwheeling sideways and landed on its wheels, just in the edge of a bush. Very lucky and awesome I thought, but as I hit the throttle to bring it back to me, it became apparent one of the rear wheels had lost its turnbuckle, so I went and picked up the truck- right rear turnbuckle was completely missing. Luckily as I searched for it, a young boy & girl who had been watching were also looking for it, and the little girl came running over holding the turnbuckle, and said "is this what you're looking for?". Bless, not all little kids are devil spawn afterall. I managed to get the turnbuckle refitted okay, but since one end was ripped apart, I had to improvise and remount it to the bulk using a spare wheel nut to clamp it in place- worked great. After fixing that mess, I then proceeded to do a few more speed runs, but being gentler on the throttle this time. After about 5-10 minutes, I saw the truck starting to loose power and speed, so I bought it in to me... and smoke was coming from the motor... carp. I checked it with my temp gun, and it said 358*f! = toasted. The MMM was at about 130*f, and the batts at about 120*f- the 10g wires were also very warm, so that motor was sucking some serious amps as it died. I cooled the motor down for about 20 minutes, but upon puttig in some fresh batteries and arming the MMM, all I got was horrible cogging and stuttering; the rotor is de-magnetized, and I wouldnt be suprized if the varnish is melted on the windings too. The black line on the motor is where the lvc harness for my lipos had melted to it, thankfully it wasnt in use as I was using the newest A123 packs I bought recently (thankyou Kulangflow, again). Now to go stock up on rod ends, and a new 'cheap' motor to hold me over until the 70mm Medusas arrive... |
wow 358!!!! i cant believe it didnt thermal before!!!, congrats man i think thats the hottest ive seen lol
|
I guess these tires are really tough to move and needs some serious amps to make it roll. This is definitely bigger than my Big Joe
|
WOW that somthing Neil..
358 are you sure (??) and it didnt melt ? Hope you have beter luck with the Medusa |
The tires are heavy, but the hvmaxx never had issues shifting the truck, so it really is down to the poor quality & efficiency of that hobbyshitty motor. I checked it with my IR temp gun and 358*f was the highest temp- put it in *C mode too and it was about 180*C; spit boiled instantly on contact. Only the esc would have thermalled though, not the motor, since there are no temperature sensors in the motor like there are with the hvmaxx- need some kind of warning alarm or buzzer if the temp rises above a certain point like 160*f or so.
Im sure the medusa will be fine though, just have to wait for them to be released; in the mean time I bough one of the Hacker C50 9XL clones from 'bid product', so we'll see how that does when it gets here.... |
yea my 8xl fiegao would thermal and cut out on me weird that it would do that

A few shots of the inside of my toasted motor, and my cool new fridge magnet:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1002-4.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1003-5.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...icture1008.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1009-1.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...ture1011-1.jpg The inside of the windings, where the magnet would reside, are noticably rough, where the epoxy as melted and turned to a powdery subtance- which smells like rolling tobacco, very odd... The endbell was stuck on well though with epoxy, had to hit the shaft with a hammer to pop it off. |
nice ref magnet
|
So that’s what a toasted motor looks like.. :oh:
Hay Neil, I cant quite read all of the numbers on your bank statements, can you please focus and repost (?)..:lol: Just Kidding!! :na: |
