I just ordered a 36x50mm V2 afterburner 4800kv motor with the bonded heatsink for $118.55 shipped direct from Medusa Research to use in my Rustler (I would have gotten the one without the fins, but it wasn't in stock). I'm having it shipped home since I only have 4 weeks left up here at school. I'll let you guys know how it goes for 1/10 applications (hopefully I'll remember to post....:D).

Let us know how good the motor is.

Five-oh-joe 03.27.2008 06:03 PM

No problem. It'll be going into a Rustler and running off of a Trinity 4500 lipo when I get home. This won't be for about a month though (finals aren't until the last week of april). The only motors I have to compare it to are my Feigao 540 8s, the 5700 castle motor, and the Novak SS5800 motor w/ sintered rotor.

lincpimp 03.28.2008 12:19 AM

Well, given its size and claims, it should be quite a step up from the feigao 540 s can. I may try one of the 60mm 1600kv models for an 1/8 buggy. If it is half as good as they say it will be a good step up from a feigao, and not far from a hacker c50 or aveox 36series l can.

These look to be decent motors. I found this article intresting.
http://www.flyupyours.com/heli/dpr/neuvsmedusa4s.htm.
It is comparing Medusa to Neu.

glassdoctor 03.28.2008 03:08 AM

Interesting finds. It would be nice to have something in between a Neu and Feigao in price and performance.

The comparison Neu vs. Medusa.... ^^^ the guy says he gives a slight edge to the Medusa, but I think he's on crack (or a paycheck from Medusa ) because they have basicly identical performance but the Neu ran much cooler and pulled less amps. And that was after logging almost twice the "runtime" in mah according to the graphs. So it looks to me like the Neu was clearly the more efficient superior motor. :na:

Having said that... I definitely want to try a 36-60 motor. Or at least get a full scoop by someone else who can compare vs. Feigao and/or Neu

Five-oh-joe 03.28.2008 09:04 AM

Well, just got an email from Medusa saying my order has been delayed. I'm guessing it has to do with the 4800 kv 50mm long motor (ordered that motor, but with the heatsink on it). Guess they're outta stock then eh?:whip:

_paralyzed_ 03.28.2008 10:33 AM

five o, you dont want the finned can, it wont fit on the rustler, their fins stick way out, consider this delay a blessing

Five-oh-joe 03.28.2008 11:23 AM

They stick out that far? I dremeled the crap out of my tranny case so that heatsinks will fit on my Castle Creations 5700 motor (the same heatsink that Tamiya sells for the TT-01). That fit just fine.

Hmmm... When I tried to add the smooth can 4800kv motor to my cart on their site, they said it was out of stock, and that's it. Couldn't backorder it or anything through the site.

I kinda want the 4800 too, since I don't run more than 2s lipo (at least for now).

The site said the heatsink is bonded on, not built into the case like a Neu. Think I could remove it if the need arose? At the very worst, I suppose I could dremel the fins down some too.

Thanks for the heads up paralyzed. I think I will try it out with my dremeled up transmission first, and if there is still clearance issues, then I'll see if I can remove the heatsink or dremel it (or parts of the transmission housing) down where I'm having problems. Alternatively, I could try to return it I suppose in exchange for the smooth can. Being that I live in Florida, heatsinks are my friend (and is the reason why I chose the finned version).:intello:

Also forgot to mention; on the "customer comments" section of my order, I put down that it's going into a Traxxas Rustler (if that means anything to them, I dunno!). Maybe they'll notify me of something. I'll also just try a big pinion to help keep the motor as far away from the tranny as possible...:D

Yea, I still believe that Nue is far superior, but these seem to give good performance with slightly higher amp draw (and a lower price tag). Seems good for applications where power trumps runtime. Their 28-32 motors look like a good candidate for a vendetta st to me.

_paralyzed_ 03.28.2008 06:20 PM

five-o- please look farther into the medusa site, there are pictures of the finned motors the fins are all the way around the can and protrude what looks to be 3/4 of an inch, you are really better off getting a smooth can, you'd really have to hack it up to get it to fit, remember, these are built to hang in helicopters, rustlers never entered their mind.

Five-oh-joe 03.28.2008 06:23 PM

Awww.....but the heatsink is so pretty.... It's an extra .5" in diameter with the heatsink btw. So .25" on any given side.

I'll email them and see what they can do.

Sent them an email, asking if I can just backorder the motor without the heatsink. We'll see if they reply....(hopefully they do; the more that I think about it, I don't really need the heatsink if these things are THAT much more efficient than a feigao or castle motor).

You are correct sir, need to make an even 100! I did have a look at all of my motors recently and they seem to be multiplying! I may have to have another sale!
