A friend of mine spoke with Joe Ford today who stated they have nothing to do with the BL system in this new Traxxas boat.
But for $400 and 50mph out the box on 6s, I'm sold. It would take some cash to set up a boat properly for 50mph. I'm wonder if this BL system will be limited to water usage? Or could we see them crawl into the MT's and Summits? |
50MPH is a feat no matter what the vehicle is. It takes a lot of power to move something through water. My Dad has a ~3200lb boat with 200HP, top speed is 42MPH. That same 200HP in a 3200LB car would easily break 100MPH. As I already said, I was ready to drop money on a SuperVee27 when Tower got them back in stock, but rather than informing me they where in stock I was informed they where discontinued. The SuperVee wasn't lipo ready, no 2.4Ghz radio, 3/4 the size and I'm pretty sure it would have cost a lot more than $400 just to get it to 40MPH. I think they are a little late releasing this though as boating season has already begun, but pretty good timing with the SuperVee off the market.

Well the Supervee would do 40 easily with lipos and a new prop. But no 2.4ghz radio and only 27". The SV was pretty nice when it first came out. Many clubs started classes based on the SV27 and the BJ26. I wouldn't doubt this new Traxxas boat to start the same revolution and have a Traxxas boat spec class.
Boats are nice and fun! But they drain batteries MUCH MUCH quicker than land r/c's. I would get a maximum of 7 minutes of runtime in a 2p 8000-10,000mah setup. That got old fast for me so I gave up on the boating world. |

This is the local boat guru & some of his projects and/or customers in action http://www.youtube.com/user/fastelectrics This is the "fastest" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA3y_gyX3m8 When you consider how much drag is on the entire vessel these speeds are fairly amazing. 50mph from Traxxas (if it's true) is no mean feat...they'll sell thousands |
Here's another vid...

Those are some fast boats PBO.
|
Hmm, will it be fiberglass?
I have a supervee. Out of the box with the stock prop and lipo we got 35+ out of it. With an octura prop that I sharpened and balanced I got 44 mph out of it. This was with some 12c 3600mah lipos, 4s total. I can imagine I had a few mph tucked away with some better lipos. So 100 bucks for the lipo, paid 300 for the boat and 15 bucks for the prop. Traxxas boat looks cool. Would be nice to see the setup, off to the OSE forums... |

There's a reason people mostly run 2p lipo setups. Boat draw far more amps and far higher bursts than a normal land vehicle. There is the added runtime as well, but mainly for safety in the setup and having the available amperage to run some of these setups. 1 change in the prop could drastically spike the amp draw. Quote:
Much of the boat community have come to the consensus that this boat will be constructed in ABS for cost reasoning. In the video, you can clearly see the lip of an ABS mono hull. I love the graphics and layout on that hull. |
I think with the performance and looks coupled with the price of 400 this will be a hot item. It will do what Traxxas does best and get people into the hobby.
No matter how you feel Traxxas is responsible for getting more people into the hobby than all the other companies combined. (opinion based on what I have seen, not a fact based on numbers I have) I will probably purchase one as it will fit my boating needs perfectly. I don't plan on racing and a $400.00 complete package (minus batteries because I won't keep the trx ones) is perfect for my wants. BTW, thanks for the vid PBO, it looks plenty fast for me. |
It does look like fun, and 50mph out of the box is nothing to sneeze at. I would like to see the internals and will wait till some of the OSE guys get a few "miles" on theirs...

Yeah, read much the same about the KOS cat boats.
Once I get this thing the ESC and motor are getting yanked out and my stuff is going in. I already have a 120amp speedo and a NEU waiting, will be trying up to 8s in it. |
