I'm not sure how much easier one could make it. My concern was why did that one come off? Could it be related to the pool of flux that ends up on top of the molten solder in the cup? Or was it just a bad solder connection.

Just a bad connection, I'm sure. The flux pool is only on top of the solder pool, so it doesnt get in the way of the wire.
