Knez 11.08.2011 09:02 AM

So caNt wait for these arms....

pietrvds 11.08.2011 10:39 AM

me neither knez!!!! :))

the arms are 45mm longer than stock so its quite a big difference :)
Don't know what material to use yet, especially the thickness because in this thickness (8mm) longer means more/to much flex...
For me it doesnt matter if they will weigh a ton, they must be as tough as the standard ones or even tougher. Most people don't have to much problems with the standard arms so i think its a good reference for toughness.
Don't want them to be unbreakable also otherwise other stuff will break but i think it will be around 16mm thickness so they will be thick but considering the length it will be in proportion.

considering the dogbones, i'm still waiting for an answer from 2 people... It's just a thing of a looong breath (don't know if that's the right expression also in english lol) but winter is coming so perfect time to work on stuff that takes alot of time :)

I'm still waiting on some crucial parts to get the build up and running again...
Still need those 2 FLM XL bulkheads with the correct outdrives and then the mood will be better to start coz now its only bits and parts and not that much courage to start coz it wont be able to run so... :s

Recieved the shocks! and they are MASSIVE lol! never thought they were goin to be that big but they'll fit it perfectly , more scale! :)))

Knez 11.08.2011 01:32 PM

45mm longer is a lot. Just cant wait for you to finish this :)
Well i do agree, arms need to be at least strong as stock.
I agree, they should not be unbreakable as other parts will suffer.
How will you make them 16mm thick, probally not all the way but like thicker in middle?
Did you thought about using wider braces for a-arms, maybe than you could make shorter a-arms if this got any sence at all. As while you are making A-arms why not make them the lenght you want :)
But maybe something in between these 2 mods would be an option.
What about KD, to buy there DB only and make you arms lenght to fit those dogbones.

I gues you will update us how and what.
Waiting for goodies just sucks. Better part is when you receive them ;)
I am waching those FLM bulks for some time now, just cant say i know wich one should i order and why do one come with diff. output cups?

The shocks yes, so what you think of them..will you be ordering softer springs?
I received today kit for them, wich i draw lol.

pietrvds 11.08.2011 02:40 PM

LOL knez :))))
you're making it difficult but i think i understand ;)

I will only be making the a-arms and the upper arms but not widen the braces coz i think it wont be good for the movement of the arms...
The thickness is simple, i'll just buy it in 16mm and cut the arms out :)))))
Thickness will be reduced at the hinges but only the minimum required to give the same movement like stock arms, i dont really care about weight i just want them to be beefy to fit with the shocks and handle abuse.

the shocks are fine, quality looks great and especially for that price! i allready have the lightest (yellow) spring sets for them and ordered 3 sets so i have spares also ;)
I think i'll use lighter oil in them but i will do it when the car is ready so i can test it with the weight of the car.

When you order the flm bulks you can only use the XL versions with the supplied cups, those cups are made to fit the bulks, the standard xl/flux cups are to big to fit through the sides so FLM shaved them to make them fit ;)

I ordered the super hybrid (buggy) bulks a year ago so now i have 2 bulks laying around for a future project.... The other bulks are supplied with the correct cups so hopefully i'll recieve them in a week or 2.

pietrvds 11.28.2011 02:06 PM

been a while, been much to lazy but i made something today hehehe

i bought the same shocks as knez and they are BIG so i wanted beefy shocktowers that wont bend under the pressure and rollovers so i made these....

compared to the other ones i made:

thickness :)

made it look a bit buggy alike.

with shocks to show the free movement

stil ALOT of cleaning up work to do and to maker them fit my bulkheads but this is what they will look like.

pietrvds 11.29.2011 12:37 PM

I just finished the shocktowers, the edges remain rough, i tried sanding them, heating and slicing off the rough sides but this is the best result i ended up with. The edges where cut with a stanley knife.
They aren't 100% identical to each other coz i cut them out with a handsaw lol but they match 90% or more so that's pretty good i guess :)

pics mounted on my flm bulkheads

http://oi41.tinypic.com/v7bhoy.jpg

then cut out some bushings for my shocks, pretty simple also, 2 rods fitted them in each other and cutted them out to the length i wanted. 8mm outer and 4 mm inner diameter.

then mounted the shocks for show :)

next thing will be making some extended arms but it all takes alot of time but i'll post pics/progress asap ;)

Unsullied_Spy 11.29.2011 05:45 PM

:surprised: Glad I've got a 24" screen, pics are huuuge! Pics are very detailed though, that's gonna be a beast!

pietrvds 11.29.2011 11:57 PM

lolz i know, some forums automatically make them smaller :)

it will be a beast for sure :)

ZippyBasher 11.30.2011 12:23 AM

Looks Sweet! and those shocks are HUGE!:whip:

But BEEF for sure.!!

EDIT: looking at it again, I would actually make an aluminum piece that connects all four mount screws together and will make the contact patch much larger than 4 screw heads.

pietrvds 11.30.2011 10:04 AM

when i screwed them to my bulkheads the screwheads started to pull into the material and that's definately not good, so i think you're absolutely right!

It's really cool you took a good look at it and gave it some thoughts, sometimes when you're busy with something you start looking over things... i would have used washers but this will be better coz i dont want to ruin them because of such a simple thing.

thanx again, more/other tips are more than welcome, just making things up as we progress :)

pietrvds 11.30.2011 04:48 PM

Hey Zipster, made some more progress with the shocktowers :)
ZippyBasher had the idea of a plate to hold/press the shocktower against the bulkhead... This way securing the shocktower much better and ensuring the screwheads don't damage the material instead of using washers so this is what i made with his idea in mind.

http://oi39.tinypic.com/2zp4585.jpg

just need to drill the rest of the holes (4) for the bulkhead.

still lots of wooorrrkkk to be done but this is FUN, really enjoying it!

all tips are welcome coz sometimes you just dont see thing/problems anymore when you're busy lolz

pietrvds 12.04.2011 09:59 AM

I'm cutting the arms as we speak, just taking a short break coz the handsaw is killing me but it will be DIY all the way

this is a drawing of how they will look like, can't draw in 3d lol so ,its oldschool with mm paper and a pencil and then scanned it and coloured it :)

http://oi42.tinypic.com/2md5ovs.jpg

shocks will be mounted truggy/buggy style with the shock end in the first cavity with a 4mm screw throughout both cavities, the bolt will be tightened in the second cavity.
Rear arms are slightly different where the hubs are you see the rears are thicker that's because i use the integy HD hub carriers so no need for those silly spacers anymore! 8)

Upper arms will be made when i finish these coz i cant draw them before i tested the lower arms with the shocks then i'll try some designs opf the uppers.

and off we go again! :whip::lol:

pietrvds 12.04.2011 07:27 PM

after alot of cutting and sweating i finished the rough versions of the lower arms...

just going to post pics, these are just the rough ones that will be moulded and then finished and then moulded again...

picture time!
