E-Maxx Rock's: You might want to get a hold of some good caps and add them to the input of the Quark. Seeing as that thing is heavier than a standard maxx truck, and S&T recommends putting caps on a maxx (Quark).
Just a suggestion. |

any sugestions? i know u are good in that area!! BIG TIME but i am doin a mmm or r1mt fer shure! |
As has been mentioned, I built that Muggy, although no mods took it a couple of steps further and actually made things nice. He really made good use of the voids in the rear bulkhead for the electronics.
I don't think that the Muggy is a good racing candidate by any means. It handles OK on the track, but nothing like a true race truck. Of course, a really skilled driver could probably surprise you with it. I saw a guy at our local track show up with a MGT with MT tires on it come out and whip everyone's butt. I'll list the reasons why I went with the Muggy. 1. It has a center diff. I think that the center diff is leaps and bounds better than a tranny. It serves to relieve some of the stress that the drive train endures by unloading to either the front or back as needed. For this reason, I wouldn't lock up the center diff. Locking up the center diff will also substantially affect the handling. It's great for crawling, but not for hauling butt. I ran 100,000 diff fluid in the center and liked it. I like the center diff better than the tranny because there are fewer parts to break. 2. It's easy to stock parts for the Muggy. The front and rear arms are the same. Front, rear, left, and right interchange. Parts are also pretty inexpensive and can be had on ebay pretty cheap from people parting out new kits. 3. The truck is big. I don't mean this from a standpoint of the stature of the truck. I mean that all of the parts are big. Everything from the knuckles, to the shafts are big. They look like they were meant to run the big 40 series tires and wheels. The Muggy shocks are what I loved the most. Boy, are they easy to rebuild and maintain. 4. The truck is tough. I put mine through some pretty wicked stuff on the track. It did very well for a truck that went 13lbs. As far as back flips from a standstill go, it was easy to flip it onto its lid and have it bounce back onto all fours. It's really no great feat for a brushless setup. I saw no mods' video and the truck does look fast. I don't want to downplay what no mods did with the truck, but I do have to say that it's probably only getting about 35mph in the video. The truck is big and is good at climbing over things and eating up rough terrain, but it's no drag truck. You really should try to keep things sane. If you try to make it fast, you'll likely start breaking stuff just from the stress due to the weight of the truck. Things really didn't come together for me until I went with the 9XL motor geared about 12/46. If I had it to do again, I'd go with a 10XL, or better yet, a 12XL on 5S lipo. I'd run the 5S2P 8Ah pack. The truck carries its weight very well. There are some things that I had to do, which were already done on no mods' truck. First, I went to an aluminum center diff cup. It seems that there was such stress on the center diff, that the screw holes in the cup would strip out. Second, aluminum (the milled stuff, not the cast) front and rear diff cases. I cracked two sets of plastic cases simply because of the torque due to the heavy truck and the huge tires. I'd also setup the truck with a motor/esc combo that would allow me to run pinions in the larer range. 11T on up. When I was running the 9T pinion on concrete, I would sometimes strip the spur gear when landing after a jump. This only happened when I had to apply brakes to level the truck during the jump, but I think that the larger pinions afford more gear contact and prevent this from happening. As for the motor mount, I made it myself. It simply bolts to the center diff bulks. Since I was going that way, I used the optional Sportwerks aluminum center diff bulks. I then drilled out the treads that were there for the brake disks and counter sunk the holes, so that the screws passed through the diff bulk and screwed into the 1/4" aluminum motor mount. This made for a VERY rigid mount and also served to move heat from the motor to the chassis. If you are going with Neu motor, I'd be sure to go with a controller that can handle the Neu. The MM required undergearing with the big truck. As you can see from no mods' vid, the Quark helped substantially. He is running a taller gearing than I could have. If you get the Neu, I'd go with a 1700kv motor or less. With the truck it's going to be better to go with a low kv motor and gear up, rather than get a hot motor and have to gear down. |
wow, thx for the big write up man!
im am by no means racing it! no way and yes thats what i like! the BIG ness of it! and hes running a 9xl, a neu would help me, and maybe a extra lipo cell, 40 is enuff for me, i would be fine with 40 for shure! 35 to i would do all the stuff u said rite off... so now probs there! how are the diffs? and yeah, i know, unnder 13 is when they get iffy and are to small and strip stuff im goin to use a mmm or r1mt no debut! i wont even do a mm, so no probs there.... is this worth doing? or would u recomend the same size truck from someone else? |
Well, I liked the Muggy, but obviously I chose to sell it and keep my other trucks. I can't give any particular reason why. Actually I can. My Monster GT will do back flips off of walls and trees. That's the biggest reason. LOL.
I do like the Muggy, but kept the MGT. The Muggy was an easier conversion. All I had to fabricate on that was the motor mount. Everything else was just trimming to fit stuff. I peeled maybe 10/1000ths off of the inside of the rear center diff bulk to make sure that nothing would rub, but you can do that with sandpaper and a flat surface. Everything else dropped right in. It took me about 4 hours to convert the Muggy, but that's because I had already done two sportwerks vehicles and had already been there and done that. Another reason that I kept the MGT, was because I had TONS of spare parts for it. I just like the simplicity of the truck. The only problem that I had was that it kept breaking shafts inside of the tranny, but it has a center diff now. I had gotten an LSP center diff for the Muggy, but wound up not needing it, so it was just laying around. I got bored one day and did it up in the MGT. The Muggy definitely handles better than the MGT. It think it's built better too. Is it worth doing, for a basher, YES. It has a certain intimidation factor. I used to take it out to the gravel pit and when one of my buddies with a smaller faster vehicle started teasing me, I'd just roll over em, and pretty easily at that; and almost everything is a smaller vehicle too. If you are on a budget, there's nothing wrong with the MM, as long as you don't try to run too hot a motor. A 9XL or higher turn would be fine. I just kept gearing up until the MM started complaining by cogging, and then backed off a tooth or two. Just remember that speed is not this truck's strong suit. Believe me, if you get this thing doing 30mph, God help anyone that you might run into, because it's gonna hurt. The tires and wheels add alot of rolling mass and unsprung weight to the truck. If you want to go fast with it, I'd recommend going with some 23mm hexes and getting the Proline HD wheels for standard size tires. If you get going much over 40 with the Muggy and the big tires, you will loose control. |

well if i had a mgt like u did with tons of apares id do the same, i dont really like asso tho...and what do u mean? the ugy will flip of tres to if u wanted? lol i dont quite get what u mean by that will a peice of L al work fine? i have a bunch of files, drill, dremel, etc i have all that stuff i can see it handling better, but thats because its more truggy then monster truck... but by built better, u mean tougher, or more simple or? and i like the sound of that! lol i would def do that to my buddys car LOL..will this beast soak up bigger jumps, and bumps that i will hit all bl... i assume its heavier then it was nitro and i mean im on a buget, so if i want it done faster then feaigo and mm, but will prob have a long project to have fun with, so a quark and new for shure... i just figured out a quark air pro is the same as the monster, even has reverse! so for 180 bucks it should be worth the money, unless the mmm or r1mt is not much more and will run the neu's smooth and i never drive wheres theres kids really, cars, but no ppl.... i want over 30 tho... needs to be onroad fun to lol.. but yeah that could hurt like hell!! but i already have one pair of big joes i could use, and i have 2 sets on road rage.. so theres on/off road tires lol.... i want BIG tires for it, its big, so it needs BIG shoes lol thx a TON for all the help aangel!!! ty VERY much |
The MGT has its problems too. I posted about those on the other MGT thread. The MGT also comes with those tiny 14mm hexes and I stripped out three sets of wheels with perfectly good tires on them. I added the 23mm hexes, but they are still driven by those tiny little pins and they do break. The MGT would, however, be easier to convert from a "tools needed" standpoint. I just used some 3/16" thick aluminum angle, when it had the tranny in it, to make the mount.
I think it's a toss up. Go with what you like. I think the Muggy is a better truck. I just like the MGT. I can pretty much fix anything that might break in about 10 minutes. What I meant by flips off of trees and walls is that I can actually drive my MGT up a vertical wall or tree and it will do a backflip off of it. I can't do it as well as my son, but it's not too hard. It really freaks people out when they see that. |
yeah thats a prob on any car really tho... well monster truck
yeah, idk yet yet.. mite all go to racing, who knows... i need a basher tho, thats for shure and yeah, i did that with my revo and pede.. its fun |
This thread should help a lot, especially if you decide to race it:

angel said it right.. its not the best but i sure have fun with it. i unlike tony pretty much stick to backyards and construction sites. i wanted something simple in design to keep weight down but wanted size to cruise across grass and terrain like my 5b did. i have achieved most of my goals with this build with the exception of compromising my need for speed for smooth operation. since my vid and posts i have gone with the smaller stock 40s tires reworked steering steering to get into the carbon single servo thing. ive bothered Angel so much about this project that he probably never wants to hear another word about it again. haha... this is definitely NOT for the novice ( and i thought i wasn't) and it has cost me about 1100.00 with zero replaced parts. yet... hopefully i wont. Listen to the crew about the speedo. i have had mass problems initially with thermal issues but took an idea and ran with it, hence my processor heat sink. this is a must!! i tune off of the recommended heat ranges and use only the max amp 5ah bats for i understand they are the best they offer.
if you want to try your hand in it though i would be more than willing to help as much as i can. However others here seem to have more to offer. |
no mods, I think that you have taken that truck far beyond what I did. It looks stock. You also have it running to its potential. I guarantee you that if you took it out to a construction site and a guy with a nitro version showed up, you'd run circles around him.
If you want a truck that can stand some speed and still do a bit of off roading, perhaps a Jato should be your next project. Really, if you get into a truggy, all you will gain is some speed. You will sacrifice a lot of versatility and ground clearance. A truggy would be great if you were racing, but since you aren't, I don't know what to tell you. I know that I still run my MGT conversion much more than I do my truggy, which is faster. You seem to be having the same dilemma that I often do. What to do next? |
funny that you should say that cause i damn near made that with my 10th scale check it --->http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=120119922984
anyways i think i will always be in constant search for something better i just have to learn to live with what i got |
