I hope so! At 3 times the cost it better have some magic in it. I honestly cant complain about the Ammo with it only costing $35.
I think your right about the 60mm series but I like gearing for about 40k motor RPM, untill the MMM hits the streets I can only get about 30k out of the 36-60-2000. Of curse this is all 2 pole motor theory the 4 pole Medusa might just have the torque I want at lower RPM's. The 50-3300 should answer this for me by dropping to a 4s and seeing how it does with a taller gear ratio, the Ammo stunk setup like this! |
I can't wait to see how one of these 50mm motors moves an Emaxx..:mdr: I'm most curious as to how hot it'll run. If you can, could you possibly get some temperatures for us also? Thanks!
|
Yep, temps will be logged.
I ran with the Ammo under a heat sink yesterday for the first time and the temps stayed under 120f with a 13t pinion and 68t spur. Without a heat sink I was up in the 170-180f range so the heat sink is making a huge differance. Top speed is in the mid 30's with this gearing, torque is good enough to lift the front end at up to about 10-15mph. Not huge power but quite a bit better than stock. On a 15t pinion the top speeds are in the high 30's to low 40's, wheelies up in the 20+mph range, temps were getting close to 200f though. I was airing it out big time yesterday, I cleared a two lane gravel road using the slope of the ditch as a ramp, I wasn't expecting it to fly so well at the speed I'm getting. I was stoked because it took alot of power and money to get my T-maxx to clear that road, and the E is doing it with nothing more than a $160 motor/ESC combo. Quite happy with this Ammo motor for the price! Cant wait to try out the Medusa, it should be awesome. |
With regards to mid range motors, the only other choice I dont think has been mentioned are the Megamotors. They have a nice range of sizes and kv ratings similar to Neus, but about half the price- good motors by all accounts: MegaMotors.
|
are the mega's midrange or top notch? i only ask because i don't know. i do know they have all the top features with the exception of being hand wound.

My Medusa didn't make it yesterday, hopefully it will be here today. The 6xl showed up, it was supposed to be a 3.175mm shaft and it's 5mm:( I could turn it down but I'm thinking about sending it back.
Those 22/50's look sweet but I think a $300 price tag takes it well out of the mid range. The available Kv's look better suited to HV. I've always considered the Mega's an upper mid level motor. I bought my two mega's back when they were new to the U.S. market and the exchange rate was very favorable, not the case any more. So I feel they are a bit over priced now. |
It's Here! The Medusa arrived today, initial impression is not as strong as pulling a Nue from its packaging. It is a nice looking motor just not as smoothly finished as the one Nue I have.
Off to get it soldered in for some runs:D |
NICE! How many days did it take to get from them to you?
I wonder if mine is sitting back home waiting for me...:mdr: Ohhhh....turns out mine is waiting for me at home too...... WOOHOO! |
It was three days maybe four. Very quick really.
Just got done with the first run with it! 9 min and the temp was under 100f. I did eagle tree it but the ET temp loop slipped off and all I had for temps was an MIP onboard. I was running a 13t/68t gear set and it seems a bit lower power overall than the Ammo with the same gears. Here is the amp/volt data for the Medusa. http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...005s2pA123.jpg Ammo data graph. http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...005s2pA123.jpg Dang I'll need to redo the Ammo data I seem to have started on less than a full charge that run. I also had the ET set for a two pole motor so my RPM reading are goofed for the medusa run. |
Interesting. The Medusa pulled less current than the Ammo. I wonder if that's because of its 4 pole design having an affect on the kt. Good temperatures though! Definitely looking forward to mine now. Since the Medusa is 4 poles, gearing up would probably wake it up some and get you some serious power (that seems to be what they like).
What cell count/type are you running? I'm guessing NiMH and 12 or 14 cells. |
Sorry thought that was on one of the logs, I'm running a 5s2p A123 pack.
I just put on a 14t for the next run, the boy wanted a ride in the RZR so I had to take a break from the truck and go looking for mud. He came in and showed Mom his cool mud pox, LOL Anyway i'm going to try out this 14t, with the temp loops better attached and the gear ratio/pole count set right. Back in a few. |
Nice. Thanks for the info on the batteries. I was wondering why the voltage didn't match up too well with NiMH or typical lipos....:D I forgot you said you run 5s2p A123s. D'oh!
|
Just came in for another run this time on 14t pinion.
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...005s2pA123.jpg The puases are me checking the onboard temp guage I repositioned it and cant see it through the body now. The temp climed to 114.7 after I powered down. ESC temps peaked at around 140f Power felt more on par with the Ammo this run, and its obvious the motor has more to give. Too dark to continue today. Was catching some big air with it tonight. Cleared the two lane gravel road by a good 5' so I'm luanching it a good 30' long and 8-9' high, Awesome!!! Forgot to mention the Prop RPM is wheel speed and I'm running Mulcher tires with molded foams so there is very little tire ballooning. |
Wow, not too bad at all. 115 on the motor pushing 1000 watt peaks. Not too bad. From the graphs and the temperature, it seems like the Medusa is a pretty efficient little motor.
Thanks for the information buzzsaw. I'm quite glad I invested in one of these suckers now.:mdr: |
I want a RZR so bad..............
|
Para, There is one for sale at the dealer I got mine from. Ya, it's an awesome toy makes my 500H.O. seem like a joke. Cant wait to get tunes in it, I have a PPI amp and some blua speakers going in to it with my cell phones MP3 player I'll be set.
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...6/DSC04924.jpg where in MN do you live? I'm SE about 30 miles south of Rochester. 5 oh, I think these Medusa's were well worth the price!! First run tomarrow will be with the 15t, then I'm thinking drop to 4s and gear up to a 19t and see how the motor copes. |
shakopee, that's cool, theres a few of us from mn here. over on the traxxas forums they are getting a bash session together in mankato for late june at a bmx track, I gotta register, but I'll post more info here in the general discussion section when I know it. I got to ride a grizzly with a 660 and that was balls to the walls power, and i've seen rhinos move, that RZR must be nuts! Nice action shot!
|
Cool, I'm from Mankato originaly so PM me with any info or a link, if you dont mind. I dont do the Traxxas forums anymore.
|
id be up for some bashing as well......please post more info here when you find out the details
|
I definately will, it's setup for midmorning june 28th, I signed up at the traxxas website just for the info. I'll start a thread in general discussion, hopefully we can get more rcm alumni interested, be able to show the traxxas kiddies what r/c is about

Any new info about Medusas?
I have also read topic "Medusa 36-50-3300 Vs. Ammo 36-50-3300" and Medusa 36-60-2000 seems perfect due to cost effectivness to put into 1/8 buggy with MMM and 6S A123 :) |
I'm going to be running mine this weekend since I'm now done with finals.:)
I have a 50mm 4800kv that's going into a Rustler; it's pretty hot now that summer is starting to creep up on us, so it should be interesting to see how the motor performs. |

I cant believe how cool my 36-50 runs in the Maxx I was really expecting temps to be in the 150-160 range but I have yet to see it over 116F after a bash. |
Sweet, how do yuo have it geared/voltage? (I loose track of all these threads with the info in them already...).
|
I'm running 5s A123 with 15t/68t gears on the 3905 tranny. I was radar gunned at 42mph through grass so it scoots right along. Not as much torque as the Feigao XL vids I see around but it's a small motor.
|
I can safely say that the 35/60/1500 motor in my hyper 8 on 6s lipo makes tons of power and runs cool. Much better than the align 600xl, and runs faster on the same gearing despite the lower kv. I will run it tomorrow and get some measured runtimes and temps.

Yep. Some a-hole out bid me on a 600xl I wanted- they needed it more than me Im guessing, lol. Might try a medusa, or mega- ImpaktRc has just about every BL motor under the sun, looks like Lincs workshop....

I want a large Mega now also, I have a 16/15/3 in my MQ SE and it's been great. The open front worries me a bit on the 22 series. Just ordered a Mamba Monster so now I'm looking at 2000kv motors. ACN22/35/1E or MR036-60-2000V2-5, Medusa is less money and a U.S. based buisness. I would like to try a Mega but I think I'll end up getting another Medusa unless I can find a used Mega for a good price from a reliable trader.
|
|
That is nice. Have you ever had the thought of making a track? I wish I had all that space to drive my R/Cs.
|
Wow. That's pretty powerful buzzsaw. Impressive since it's only a 50mm motor.
I can't wait to try my medusa tomorrow in my Rustler...:D (It's all hooked up and rarin' to go; just gotta charge the 2s and I'm in business!) |
Good luck Joe!! As you can see mine runs good, nice and cool! Feels alot like my FLM EXT on an OS.18. Not quite as good as the EXT with the ported S-25;) MambaMonster is ordered to resolve that.
Yes on the track lutach, I've cut down about probably 80-90 trees getting ready so far have another 60-70 left to get rid of, pesky little box elder trees. |

I hope I can come up with a cool layout. I was thinking maybe just a bash park kind of deal, get a few dump truck loads of gravle and just pour piles around out in the back yard. LOL We'll see what happens.

Thanks! The battery is almost charged. I'll probably end up running it tonight since I'm going to see a movie in an hour with my bro and his wife. I should use high timing for the motor since it's a 4 pole, correct? |
Quote:
|
Yep, thats what I did. Havent tried highest timing, no real need to push it any harder.
Mine is set for medium start power and high timing, works well on mine but start low and work your way up. |
