I do agree with your death buy alcohol is not a fun thing, but the only time I drink in over the weekends so that helps me rationalize it out.

Yea that is the thing about this forum. We tend to watch out for one another even though we may not have met any of them. For the most part there are a pretty good bunch of guys on here, and some of them are fairly smart. This makes for a good community that watches out for one another and we lend whatever logical information that we can to help out teh R/C brothers within the RCM. You have kids and you have to think of them in everything that you do to yourself.

I’ve had a blast building it and I'm really looking forward to putting it to the test of track abuse. It is a bit pricing though just over 600.00 for the roller, but I'm hoping it will be worth in the long run and I know you and you like things to be around..

I get that to. We are used to getting a lot more vehicle for the money and with the sticker shock on that 808 and then matching it next to the MT it is a little depressing. From the engineering standpoint that 808 looks very well thought out, and hopefully it will give you the satisfaction that you expect from it. I am watching this one closely before I make my final decision on getting one.

Is that a Fender Cyber Twin or something similar hiding under the desk? :mdr:

By the way Shaun just to clarify I do not have the G-Maxx. I have 4 Maxx's of different versions and all metal construction. 1) Unlimited Engineering Lightning SuperMaxx, 2) RCM FLM ext Maxx, 3) Hardcore/Integy E-Maxx, and 4) is a Dynamite/Integy E-Maxx. All four of them have the 2 speed aluminum tranny with metal gears installed, stainless or titanium drivetrain, and I am installing all High Voltage electronics for the power plants. I now have the Quark 125B, Schulze 18/97, MGM 160/24, and the MMM for ESC's. I have the Plettenberg Big Max and I am working on acquring a few Neu & Lenear motors to finish the collection. Once we get resettled in Korea (August/September) I will begin the process of installing the electronics and figuring out how to work the ESC's so that we can get all four of them race ready. The electronics are all new to me so I am in no real hurry to burn any of them up. Once I figure everything out we will have some real fun. I have not posted anything up the way that you have, because I have taken a lot of time (& money) to put these together and picked up pieces here and there to build them. It would have taken over a year of posting to compose what you have done in just a couple of weeks with your builds. Once I have tehm all where I want them I will tear them completely down and rebuild them with care and loctite making sure not to miss tightening one screw, setscrew, pin, or nut. No mistakes no regrets. We all tend to get in too much of a rush with this hobby and it ends up costing us big time. just wanted to clarify what I have been building. Sorry for the confusion TDC. I am learning a lot seeing your builds on here. Thank you.

Unfortunately the kids have been living in California for about 7 years so my tiem with them has been very limited for teh most part. Their mother has played games with the system for a very long time keeping me from getting the tiem with the kids that I should have had. It was the decision of everyone that aftger losing their mother that spending a little time with their Grandparents until this big move was in the best interest of our kids. It helps them mourn and ease their way into this move. So the kids have seen the R/C collection when it was in its first stages, but they have no idea what has become of it. Yes I hope to get them involed in build projects very soon. I want them to learn from whatever I can share with them until the tiem comes for them to become adults and the leave home on their own. I will also share my woodworking hobby with them as well. I have a lot of shop equipment and nothing is beyond me. I also do all of my own automobile work on our cars, so they will also learn from that. All of this plus a love that we have all been deprived of for a long time.

Thanks for your supportive comentary as always Shaun. These kids have been through a lot of negitivity and it is time for them to have some fun in life, but also realize that there are responsibilities that they have to live up to.

Back to the 808 now. Is it finished yet? When will you have the final pics and videos up on here? We all look forward to seeing them:lol:

Good morning team,
I just thought I would share with you some updates on my buggy. The Monster came through and got me all of my parts today and with the kid’s in bed and Pink Floyd playing in the background I decided to make some forward progress.

Builders side note:
As once stated by Backfire and I quote him “the diff height in the RCM mount is designed to work with the tall center bulkhead of the XB8EC and XT8. The 808 uses a much shorter mount. I couldn't find my spare center bulkhead, so I just used some of the 1mm bulkhead shims from XRAY(#354032) to raise the height even. In fact, I always have used one set of these shims under both bulkhead pieces to raise the motor slightly off the chassis”.

Truer words where never spoken.. Thank you Backfire for warning us that would happen, it did and I was fully prepared for it.

Now I just need to receive my MGM controller I bought off a fellow member to show up and install the radio and she’ll be ready for a test run??... Well I also need to get my body back from the painters but that not another 10 days.. (bbboooo),,

Thanks for your time and have a great one team!!..

Done It Again

Once again TDC you have made these builds look waaaaay to easy. It is obvious that you do good research and prepare for what you are doing. YOu bounce step by step through the process and vuala there she is. Way to go, and now we will look forward to seeing the vids and photos of the completed project. This is getting much to east for you now. You need to make the next project a much more challenging build or conversion. Go for the high speed projects or something rediculously monsterous.

Nevermind, TDC, the buggy looks great. Can't wait to read what you think of it when you run it. I have a few buggys myself (not as nice as yours though:oh:) and do enjoy running them in the park by my shop. They handle short grass and dirt better than anything else I have run. Handling is great, very precise!

linc stop trying to make people think that you are some kind of college professor or brainiac. I am a mechanic who loves construction work, so spelling is the last thing I need to worry about. If you cannot understand my writing, then you must have real trouble reading the newest generation with their text shorthand stuff. Besides I know that you knew exactly what I was trying to convey. So have a drink and go play in the R/C shop you old rummie.

Nice Shaun you get your projects together so quickly. Those fat carbon towers are so nice and that lipo looks like a great fit, I was pondering what size to get and your pics always make things clearer ! Keep it up Amigo.

Hay Jerry,
Thanks for the kind words it’s been a great build, as for a bigger and more challenging builds, well I’ve got that as well going on. I'm performing a complete ground-up restoration on a 57 Chevy as we speak.

Hay Jayjay..
Thanks Man.. (for what it worth) I’ve been warned (Big TIME!) on the other TEAMRC forum (Xray driver’s) informing me that I'm totally overpowering it with my current setup (???) I don’t know well see…they are saying a 1512 or 1509 with 3 / 4 lipo’s is just right?.. but then they guys make there living driving them so every bit of weight counts, there’s might weigh in at just over 7 lbs and my will weigh in at what just over what 8Lbs??. .

Well I’ll hopefully be able to find out shortly....

Thanks for your time Jayjay and have a great one..

Thanks for the compliment lincpimp I know that don’t come often or easy .. I'm hopoing it will handle extreamly well (if I can the weight ratio correct??) how much should this thing weigh??

TDC57 06.04.2008 03:34 PM

Buggy updates!.

Good morning team,
Thank you all for your above comments!!.. I really appreciate the feedback..

Here are some updates is should have included in the last one. Sorry me bad..

I thought I would take a second out and share with you the three modifications to date that I’ve had to perform in order to switch this Nitro burring, gas spewing, ozone depleting, garage smelling bad boy!. Into the environmentally friendly, local park driving, neighbor liking (E) buggy that kind of (hhaa haa) stand here today!..

The first modification required in order the fix the height deficiencies when installing a RCM engine mount. This modification was needed to increase the front side height of the canter diff. I ended up cutting a piece of carbon Fiber and drilled two holes on it to match up with the existing center shaft tower mounting holes.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2948.jpg

The second modification was to the battery tray.
I used a ½ forstner bit and drilled down just until the bit penetrated the base holder, this allowed me to countersink the existing body screws into the holder and use a longer bolt with a counter sink ¾ washer on the top allowed me to secure the battery holder to the chassis. I also noticed that I could take the battery try and use my belt sander to takeoff another 2mm getting me to 39mm in deck height. I'm just not sure what the stock deck height number is?? Do you know??.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2947.jpg
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2960.jpg

Once I mount my ESC and receive my body back I’ll be able to fine tune the battery try holder for maximum wait distribution. At its current location with a 5s 3700mAH on board it sits exactly 40.97mm (41mm) above the bottom of the chassis.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2950.jpg

The third and final modification was to accommodate the ESC, after reviewing several other member threads and trying different locations / placements it was decided that it really needed to be mounted in the center rear for (Ease of acess, clean wire runs and CG) but I need to lift it off the chassis and mount it over the rear drive shaft.. after several deep thoughts and a glass or two (hmmmm) I used the alum servo holder that I had and used (4) of the ½ double threaded spacers that come in the GorillaMaxx kits allowed me to screw it from the bottom and top and made a simple secure stand, I also used (4) rubber washers at the bottom of the stand over the chassis to help cushion the blow for my ESC.

Here are a few more shoots of it almost completion, I need to install my RX box, antenna and install the Velcro battery straps. She’ll be running this weekend!!

Scales

Hey Shaun I was in the same boat for a digital scale and found a few on Amazon. I just punched up digital scale in my browser and that lead me to a few pics on Amazon where I found what I wanted and needed. I did some resarch on different MFG's and styles, and ended up ordering a postal/kitchen scale that goes up to 75lbs. I figured that way I can do a lot more than just weigh R/C stuff. It is accurate to .002lbs. Unfortunately they sent me a 35lb scale by mistake. I contacted them immediately and they shipped out a replacement that day. So it is on its way, and all I have to do is switch them out and send the 35lb one back return mail shipping. Anyway it has a detachable control panel, it is very lite, and it was only like $35. Brand new.

By the way I received those bearings from VXB.COM and they are exactly what I was hoping for. Double sealed, steel shields and high quality good for up to 80K rpms. I received 86 bearings and the digital caliper all for $170 shipped. I ended up ordering two more sizes due to the FLM savage diff cups needing a different size bearing (10X16X5). Once those come in I should be set for bearings for the next year. The digital caliper is very cool and it works perfectly for ($9.) with a nice fitted case.

Yea I am interested in how you like driving it since like me you have been playing mostly with Monster trucks. It will be interesting to see how you feel about the differences between the two animals. Nice work as usual Shaun, and now it is time to h ave a little fun until you start your next project. Your like me though, the build is just too much for. Have a good one TDC.

Good morning Jerry!..
I actually had the opportunity to drive on Sunday along with my GEVO and the differences are HUGE!!... Speed and torque go to the GEVO but I'm comparing / running 6s vrs 5s so there bound to be differences, also my 808 is about 4 -5 pound lighter (Hmmm???) I'm installing a 17 tooth pinion to see if that helps it speed up?.. The turning goes to the 808 (no comparison).. Durability is TBD (??) they both are excellent constructed vehicles in there own rite so I’ll need to time to beat it and see how well it holds up.. fun factor / Smile on the face (outstanding & ear to ear)..

Thanks for you time Jerry and have a great week..

Thanks MetalMan… It was a struggle to get it all as close to the center as possible, luckily I succeeded and was able to install the stock body without any shimming required.

Your build is looking outstanding!!. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on it’s durability and etc..

Have a great one Sir..

Shaun.

I had the opportunity to drive it Sunday afternoon at the park with my kids and all thought my son kept beating me in the speed runs on my GEVO, it ran great! No issues and I enjoyed 15mim of pure soccer field and play ground bark bashing.. It’s no longer a virgin..

Good Day Tdc.

Hey there Shaun it looks like you are finally having some fun with your toys. I look forward to that day as well. I have a question for ya. Now that you have gotten a chance to play with a couple of the MGM ESC's how do you like them overall? From everything that I have seen and read they are at the top of the food chain for performance and dependability once you get them setup correctly. Anyway I was just curious as to your opinion. Thank you Shaun.

TDC57 06.09.2008 04:28 AM

Hay Jerry!,
Yes I did finally have some time to play and I had a great time!..

I'm really liking the MGM controllers, I’ve got two of them now the first one I bought brand new for like $365 it didn’t work (rrrrrrrrrr) sent it back to the manufacture and three weeks later it cam back working like a champ, I’ve had at least 20 runs on my GEVO with it and it runs great and has no heat issues at all. The second one is installed on my 808, it was a team member purchase and for $235 and it running great in my 808 no heat issues experienced all day today.. I'm going to be needing a another controller for my XB8TQ and I'm just waiting for another family member to have a summer sale and I’ll pick up my third one.. Like all controllers they have there plusses and minuses but thus far for reliability and no heat concerns they’ve both been worth their weight in gold and I would recommend them to anyone.. The initial programming is HELL, but once it set you are good to GO.. But it does heart! Dropping 2+ for a used or almost 4 for a new controller, but as stated before!, you get what you pay for in the hobby!... So far I can absolutely agree with that statement 1000%..

Today at the track!..

Well I took off and visited our new indoor dirt tack this afternoon with my GEVO and my 808, 3 lipo’s and two radios, that’s it!.. I get to the track 10 minutes away from my house (not bad) and I get suckered in for a bronze membership, but I got in today for free so (what the hell) I joined. Nice place, clean, bright, great work stations with outlets, the facility also had a fulltime onsite hobby store and a snack bar for the basic junk food, big clean restrooms, etc. Luckily I got there just 5 minutes after they opened the door so I could embarrass myself in the private.

I learned a few things today gentlemen!.

Bad news:
I really need to learn how to drive on a track!!! I suck!!

The good news is I cant go anywhere but up!. :yipi: It got so bad the owner came over introduced himself, verified that I’ve never been at a track (daa…) and asked if he could drive my buggy and proceeded to rip! up the track, jumped all doubles and a huge table top and another jump (12’h x 20’l) track time 21sec (bastard!) :grrrrrr: he looked at me and proceeded to give my a few pointers, :sarcastic: apparently I was hurting his track??? We both laughed!..:mdr: (I sucked so bad) they were actually worried about the damage / chunks I was tacking out of the track on my landings that they came over and help me!. The entire time I'm noise diving my buggy into the face on the following jumps (refuse to roll over them!) my timing and speed were just a little off and I did end up in the wrong lane quite a few times and I ended up jumped it off the track a few times getting it caught in the safety netting, (both trucks) :gasp: it was kind of funny to see the expression on the people faces outside watching in as it’s coming straight at them etc.. But the beside the point!..

P.S.
I also learned that my GEVO drives over most 12- 15th scale buggies like they are speed bumps (happen 3 times) and it’s real hard for them to pass or bump me around!.. (hhhhaaaaa) :intello:

Moving on.
So after two hours of beating the “holly crap” out of both of my trucks, I was finally able to gaining enough skill to at least make it around in my lane in under 42!!. (Who’s the man!) Sure the average time is 28 sec, but my first few times I think it took me (87,92,84). OOOoo reality hearts!..

I also learned that my 808 can take a monsteris beating!! (Endowing, cart wheeling, flipping, etc) you name it this buggy did it all in stride, ran like a champ and was wiser for it.:)

I got home and it looks good!, everything is where it should be. All and all it was a fun day out at the track..

MTBikerTim 06.13.2008 01:31 AM

That 808 is so sexy. Nice body too. You have done an awesome job at converting it. I wonder why xray doesn't have a factory conversion.

jnev 06.13.2008 02:24 AM

Is this the OCRC track you speak of? Glad to hear you are enjoying the buggy. We all told you 1/8 buggies were tough. Was it tough to drive the Revo on the track and stay in the lanes? I would think it is pretty big for a track that size. I will be at the track this Saturday most likely while visiting my grandparents which is the reason for all the questions.

Once again, great conversion! Really enjoyed watching the build the whole way through. Something is making me want to build a 1/8 buggy now... Its a shame I sold my old one...

JERRY2KONE 06.13.2008 04:43 AM

Update

Hey Shaun I was cracking up reading through your latest post:rofl::lol:. Funny stuff thinking of you driving like a madman on their track like that:yes:. I am sure that you have a blast just getting to try things out in a more controlled environment:whistle:. Of course we all know there is a learning curve in anything we do that is new to us:oops:. With some steady practice and regular visits to the track I am sure that your rigs will be on the competetive edge before you know it. Think back to when you first stepped up to the plate on your first conversion? You have come a long way in that area, and h ave become quite a talent for tutorial information on those projects. Your doing great Shaun and you keep us laughing along the way as well. A sense of humor is a must in life. Good work, now have some fun with your kids. If they break it, you will fix it. HA :rofl:HA :rofl:HA :rofl:HA:lol:

MetalMan 06.13.2008 12:59 PM

Sounds like you had fun at least!

They're lucky your 808 weighs almost a pound less than the average 1/8 buggy. The divots that 1/8 buggies make are pretty bad for 1/10 buggies, I know because of SoCal. But once you get the hang of it you'll have so much more fun. Would you want to go back to OCRC next week? As you know I have no school, and it will be nice to check out the new track.

Thank you for the compliments, that made my night!.. .

The word through the grape vine is Xray will have a (E) out next year? We’ll see, I'm not holding my breath..

Have a great weekend..

Yes Sir that is OCRC track I speak of, had a great time!, defiantly would recommend to all for 15 bucks it well worth the price of admission.

You and other sure did and DAM you and others were correct!. I was amazed how tough this thing truly is. .

The EVO / GEVO was a BLAST to drive on the track… It was a little big () for the track, but it did great!! Low temps, I had no problems driving over the 5” pipe lane dividers and the other samller buggies :lol:hhhhhhaaaa.. I did discover later that I had the susp to hard, so I tweaked it today and I'm looking forward to getting it back on the track. I'm also going to run it on 6s this time, OOOooooo I'm looking forward to having the punch “on demand” when I have only 3’ to prepare for tabletop jump. Yeeehaaa…

Shot you were here today!, sorry dude I had the farther thing all day today with the kids.. (maybe next time) WHAT did you think of the facility??

Thanks a lot for the compliments.. It’s been a great build and is working out to be even a greater buggy than I had expected..

Have a great D- Day..

Shaun.

Thanks again for the kid words and I hope you and your family will have a great Farther day.. remember it’s the one day a year they kiss our ass. “) haaaa..

Hay Travis,
The owner was surprised when he felt how light my buggy now that you mention the weight differences, Yes.. I can go Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday, preferably at 3:00 pm?? Let me know your thoughts, I’ll bring the GEVO and the 808 for you to tryout, it will be courses to see what your thoughts are..

Thanks for your time MetalMan..

Hey I am now done with puting my 808 kit together, just waiting on the convert parts...

In this picture:

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2838.jpg

What are the 4 little shims for? Haven't found any use for them in that part of the build, and I didn't see any mention of them in the manual either...

Thanks to anyone that remembers his 808 build and what those shims are for ;)

jhautz 05.02.2009 12:06 AM

The shims go over the wheel axles between the bearing and the wheel hex to keep a little space and prevent rubbing. One on each wheel axle.
