My controller is a 100 amp unit. We are pretty much stuck with 24v, unless there is a 24v battery the size of a standard car battery. The gearing and motor choice determine the top speed. 24 at 100 amps could double the power we have now, the x-5 tdc linked to states 900w of power. We could easily get 1800w, and with the increased efficiency of brushless we are looking good........ especially with a 2 speed!..... |

Forward Progress continues:
Gentleman I proudly present to you the making of the Prototype 001TDC special!
The chair that I hope will one day change the world as we know it!, The lowest cost / yet (hopefully to be proven) extremely reliable wheel chair available today at a cost of $110.00 per chair, Here is what this (NEW!!) particular build is all about: “Disabled people are more likely than other people to live in grinding poverty. Unless disabled people are brought into the development mainstream, it will be impossible to cut poverty in half by 2015 or to give every girl and boy the chance to achieve a primary education. ” James D. Wolfsensohn, former President of the World Bank According to the UN Economic and Social Council, there are 300 million people with disabilities in the developing world. Of these, 20 million need wheelchairs to become mobile again. Without chairs, many have no choice but to stay confined to their houses or drag themselves along to get anywhere, exposing themselves to potential injury and disease. Many children are unable to attend school. Chances for education, employment, and community involvement disappear. Under such conditions, they often end up either begging or relying on family members to support them. So with the above said as eloquently as I'm able I’ve decided to start with my initial goal / vision. Build a better cheaper 3rd world / developing country chair.. As I stated before your basic all terrain chair start out @ $400.00 I did some research and found an organization that is doing what I was initialing planning to do with bikes and they are at $200.00 per chair! http://www.popularmechanics.com/scie...e=9&?series=60 So after Jerry relined my sense of perspective (you’re the Man Jerry!) I’ve gone a whole new / same approach as I do all my builds (MAKE IT BETTER!) and I must say that after making a few Major adjustments I'm happy to report that I'm back on track and building the Better (yet CHEAPER!) Chair “my / TDC57 / RCM WAY!.. LOL.LOL.LOL For those who have been following the build to date have seen nothing but square boxing, PVC chairs (shower and Beach) chairs that start at $1,100 and go up to $1,500.00.. Well I'm changing things up the RC Monster WAY!!! I'm adding the artistic flare that I believe these chairs need!, function and maneuverability can and have been achieved, but how about the flair / where is that’s cool affect!?! Does that diminish with the value of the chair?? Not at RCM! It most certainly doesn’t! It get improved like all of out builds, we start out with a piece of something and turn it in to and bad ass, well this chair is on that same path of badness as out RC builds.. I present to you the first glimpse at the cheapest and by far the “coolest!” 3rd world chair ever built! The TDC special 001 (prototype) How it all started out! I started out this build with every intention of gong bigger and stronger then the competition, I'm using 1” schedule 40 PVC inlue of the ¾” everyone else is using, I was also able to incorporate into the my chair build stunning cures and good looks that are only available on here on the Monster!.. LOL.LOL.. In the beginning there was nothing more than parts! http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4289.jpg As the night progressed and the booze & herbal remedies kicked in the creativity went into over drive!.. Straight and boxy are OUT! Curves, strength, style and simplicity are in.. LOL.LOL.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4291.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4292.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4293.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4294.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4296.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4297.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4298.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4299.jpg |

My questions to the team: How does it look so for  Am I on the correct path or have I gone to far to the right?? Thank you so much for your time team!.. P.S. Can someone give me the following measurements: From the rear axel (center) how far is the front axel away??? http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4305.jpg Thank you all so much for your time and help!. Shaun.. P.S.S. Please keep the conversation going regarding BL motors.. I’ll have this and the child’s shair completed within the next week and I plan on moving to BL so I’ll need all the help I can get. P.S.S.S.. I don’t want to hear any crap about the what color the chair is or isn’t!.. I'm going to dye the whole setup once I get all (per-installed).. Thanks again. |
Awesome! Your mission statement couldn't have been put any better. As far as axle placement: It needs to be as compact as possible, yet the cog can't be behind the axle(making it tippy) so a lil trial and error may be in order to make it as small as possible yet stable. PM me if you need anything, I am your sounding board!:yipi:
|
Looks good. My only concern is the size of the casters your using up front may be a bit to small and may catch to easily on things, castors are a but expensive, but they are cheaper than a faceplant:lol:.
|
|
Depends???
That all depends on wheater you are the one riding in the chair or you are watching. Plus it depends on whether you are close to the person it happens to. I can see the video showing up on youtube.

Sorry.
Sorry about that. Somtimes my funny bone just gets the best of me. I am not trying to make fun of anyone, but even some guys in wheelchairs have a sense of humor. BUT have you not seen those videos of the wheelchair dudes doing stunts and tricks at the skateboard parks? They are even crasier then we are. All in good fun guys.:party::yipi:

Well progress continues (but at a slower pace) I was able to find a seat today and some new casters, these are rated @ 300 lbs but they look a little small (?) they are 4”. :oh:
Also since it was late and the stores closed I had to fab up my on screws to attaché the seat the chair rails. Once the seat went on, I was able to better determent that I had the foot rest too low and needed to raise the bottom up 6” inches.. this adjustment really helped in a few different areas, the biggest one is I was able to cut off 6” of the legs thus strengthening the front wheels system. Short PVC good. Long legs BAD!.. LOL. :intello: I’ve figured out how to mount the rear axel but it’s going to take me about 2 hrs and just for kicks I’ll be installing wheelie / anti tip bars at the rear, (we’ll see how it looks) it might go or stay!?? Chair Questions: :intello: • Does you butt sit lower than you knees ?? or is your lower body level ?? • I'm using 4” caster now should I go to 6” is there really a big benefit? I was pushing my kids around in it today (test pilots so to speak!) I know it holds at least 100 lbs.. HAHAHAhahahahaha.. and it’s seamed ok, it did have issues at the driveway from the street about 1 1/2 “ rise, is that common?? • Can you please look at my foot rest and let me know if it too low?, should I add a height adjust to it so I can have an adjustable foot rest?? If yes do I add (skateboard grip tape) to the tops so the shoes don’t slide off?? • How far from the chair are the wheels?? 2’,4”, 6” what?? • How high above the seat until the top of tires ?? • Do you think it would look stupid if I installed wheelie bars ?? • Do I build a self just behind the seat to store thing?? • Do I add an umbrella pole ?? do I worry about the heat / sun without any shade?? On to the pictures!.. |
More questions:
Questions, questions, questions,,, Sorry guys.. Have a great Sunday!.:intello: |
Looking great. First thing, lose the front casters, those look worthless, way too small, They will get caught or hung up on every little crack or rock, and especially in a third world with no concrete or pavement. 6 inch is good.
Questions: -negative camber is for sports chairs, it makes turn in so much easier. on an everyday chair it only adds width, and you want to be as small as possible. the smaller you are the more places you can go -you want some protection between the tir and passenger -sounds good -will check - you can just attach it, I'll snap a pic of how they attach to mine later today |
Just saw your first group of questions.
-butt is a lil lower than the knees. referred to as "dump" -6 inch! huge benefits! -adjustability is very good. people have favorite chairs because everybody is different, and how we fit in things and become comfortable is different. Any adjustability in the chair will greatly add to how many people will be able to use it comfortably -as close as possible, this is where your lexan guards come in. on manual chairs those are called "clothing guards" -no real standard. -most chairs have wheelie bars -storage is good, compact is better. if it fits.......... -if they're in a chair you have given them the gift of mobility, they will move themselves under a shade tree with a smile on their face:yes: -keep up the good work!! |
Although mine is a power chair i will give you the size of my tires. My drive wheels are 8" rim, 12" tire x 3"wide. Not real sure about my swivel wheels, i can hardly see them, but i would say they have about a 4" rim, 7"tire x 2"w

No that actually does help!. quite a bit! Thank you I was thinking about my BL chair and I was wondering what tires sizes are standard.. (Thank you!).. A few more questions for the team!. • Where is the wheelie bar located on the chairs and how far is the allowed tilt back before it works? • Does anyone know where I can get cheep front bicycle dirt bike rims and tires??? Thank you all again for your time and help!. Have a great week everybody!.. |
Forward progress continues!..
So I spent most of the day today doing the Dad things but I did mange to work on the rear axel placement (that was a bitch!) but it did expose that I was off on a few of my measurements which is good thing!.. I’ve taken some picture of the rear axel layout thus far!, (still not complete) but you can now see what I'm going for! And your looking at gentlemen is a first, this is never been done before (at least ) not with PVC. What do think?? Will it hold up?? Did waste 4 yours on this setup for nothing?? Or will it work and be the next cool thing LOL.LOL… Only time and your comments will tell!.. HAHAhahahahaha.. Have a great week guys and thanks again for all of your time and comments.. Please keep them coming.. Trial and error again on the wheelie angle. You want to be able to hold a wheelie and very little more. Place it for rigidity and effectiveness.
looking good. being constructed the way it is can possibly save a lot on shipping. send it unassembled with an instruction manual. every little bit helps |
Thank you Gee!!!! :yipi:
:intello: Look what a kind hearted soul Gee is!, he sent me on his dime  ( I owe you!) the following stuff (FREE TOO ME!) for the wheelchair build.. He’s such a giver! / the MAN.. :yipi: http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_4344.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_4345.jpg FYI! My parents are down for the weekend and my DAD is total excited about trying to weld the PVC tomorrow with me!..:yipi: He’s also bound and determined to get the rear axel on and working this weekend.. LET ME TELL YOU!!! It’s extremely cool thou I'm going to be working side by side with my dad (whom I love and respect more than any other man alive, who made me in the Man that I am / hope to be) in my garage with my tools, on my project now, explaining / teaching things to him (a master mechanic for 40+ years!). Guy, You not only provided the build with something that I hope will grantee success to the project but you also were able to provide me with a one of not many left truly GREAT quality time moments with my DAD!!! And I can NEVER thank you enough for THAT!.. Thank you very much GUY!.. If you ever need anything please let me know!.. Shaun. |

I'm sorry for not reporting in sooner, but the whole holiday thing got me side tracked!, but progress is defiantly continuing!.. Just so you know..
I’ve managed to complete the basic concept, design.. (WHO”S YOU’RE DADY!!) I love the RD Phase! (You get to redo it time and time again) until you finally get it right!.. :mdr: Remember:  I need to keep it as simple at possible!. So that means I need SLOW down my MIND (IE) (TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM):rofl: I’m getting completely trashed and then figure ring out what will work at its most simplistic form. :intello:  http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4392.jpg So what do think of it so far??? Please feel free to nick pick it apart!, I need the comments on what I did wrong!.. LOL.. Thanks for your time team and Have a great New years!.. |

great job man , looks like you have done it:yipi:
|
Waiting for _paralyzed_'s opinion but looks nice to me!
|
just needs paint and spinners!!
|
Looks good to me. The back seems a little short to me, u would have to be a stubby person to push someone in the chair with the push handles that low on the chair:lol:. It would be great too if u had an optional headrest for people who have limited to no neck strength to hold their head up on their own for extended periods. Also, u need some type of park break so it won't roll down hill when they stop or roll away from the table while they try to eat.
|
Thanks for the great comments GUYS (please keep them coming!)
 Ok so R&D continues but I think I'm close?? What you think?? Once I completed the foundation / design I can add that RCM / TDC flare to it… (I'm looking forward to this!)
FYI! I incorporated the following into the chair today based off recommendations, comments received early today: :yipi: (I'm listening and deeply appreciative of your time and comments.). • Arm rest & helped strengthen the rear push bars (this suggestion came from my DAD!) • Foot rest (it’s none adjustable) sorry! But I can angel it so it works as a leg rest (not allowing the legs to fall back) if that helps?? • Rear head support (is this correct??) or should I do something different?? • I also added the necessary pathway for the brake system, but I'm drawing a BLANK on how it should works??? Is this a parking brake your referring too?? Or a brake to slow it down?? Do I attempt a brake out of PVC or use other?? If other got any recommendations??? As always thank YOU ALL so much for your time and your HELP on this project!.. Have a great Day!.. Shaun. P.S. What else am I missing forgetting about?? P.S.S. My WIFE wanted to make sure that ask if a 90% sitting angle with a 12% slope is acceptable!, she thinks the seat should reclaim at an angle of 7-10% (less 90%) what do you think??? |

Have To Say.
I have to say Shaun that I have admired your devotion throughout this project. Just like your R/C builds you stick to it until it is completed. I also like the way you are listening to everyones suggestions and trying to incorperate as much inginuity as possible along the way. From what I have seen this is truning out to be a nice chair. The cool thing is the flexibility that is allowed for changes anywhere along the conception and construction of your project making it easy to change directions if something new comes up. You are really doing well with this for someone who has never had to depend on a wheelchair for transportation. The project is looking very nice. If need be you could always have an alterenate setup of tires/wheels for varying mobile situations like sand, snow, gravle or whatever. Hats off to you for the effort up to now and for sticking with it even through the holiday season. Your The Man Shaun.
|
I’ve done it!, I cant believe it but I think I have actually done it!..
Jerry, I want you to let you know that (your comments) brought tears (THANK YOU!) I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart! Ok, well I had some time to kill while the 0001 chair was drying, so I started on the 0002 (:gasp: different supports & seating rakes, plus I'm putting a trunk on this one) this new one appears to be stronger one!, well see how it holds up compared to the first one. We wont accept anything but the best!..
For what it worth, you’re looking at (exactly) $84.68 worth of PVC! And about 4hrs of work..:party: I hope to have this one the paint booth by midweek (Bright canary Yellow!). Then I'm going to be doing my children chair over the weekend (Bright RED!). with any luck I’ll have the three completed within the next two weeks. I also ordered up some more wheels (I'm going with the 7 black spoke mags) and I found some real cool 4” red & sliver caster for the kids chair.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4418.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4417.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4416.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...s/IMG_4425.jpg Have a great one everybody!.. P.S. If you see something that is questionable, please feel free to call me on it!, I’ve never done this before and learning as I'm going.. Thanks again everybody!!.. Shaun.. |
