80.2mph today before the plastic yoke failed
:surprised:

Still running the stock plastic yokes? Man, they went on my Slash with the VXL on 3s geared 31/76. How have they held on for those runs with the Neu? :gasp:

Oh, and that Rustler is beautiful. Nothing like something that is built for purpose rather than pissing about.

PBO 04.05.2009 06:26 AM

Yep the stock slider/yoke set-up is good for 80 with my setup...just

Closer inspection of the 'unbroken' side shows doom wasn't too far away! Obviously they don't carry any twist normally

It says a lot for Traxxas quality that's for sure, both yokes (15 months & plenty of hard running) are original & have never shown signs of weakness previously!

80.2mph, thats great man. Keep up the good work.

I just recently got my Rustler running on 4S lipo and a 36-60-2000 medusa and haven't ran for more than 10min in a row without a trans failure. First it was the planetaries, then the plastic diff, now the VXL-steel ringed diff ate the aluminum idler gear. I'm going to buy a FLM trans case to see if that helps at all.

Are you running a steel idler or aluminum? What Zippy lipos are those that you have in the pic above?

-Brian

phildogg 04.05.2009 09:27 AM

he is prob. running the vxl trans. which has all steel gears. 80mph on stock sliders is doing good. keep it up.

80 mph on the stock sliders is very impressive. I tore up a stock one with the VXL and 3s, and have gone to MIP CVDs. Seems real smooth and straight but it ate the planetaries today at the track. Most annoying.

I decided not to do the big power mm/medusa thing because I wanted to keep it reliable and not have it break parts. No point if it's going to do it even with the VXL.

Thanks Raze, Phildogg is right it's a VXL trans, with original gearing

The lipos are 6S2P Zippy Flightmax 5000mah 25C...on loan from a trusting friend. I'll be returning to 4S for some runs next week

I thought it would be interesting to replace some parts when they failed rather than do everything...I'm impressed with nearly everything. If it wasn't run over by a 1:1 car earlier this year, I suspect I'd still be using the stock plastic trans

A few facts;

It takes about five times as much power to go 100 mph vs 60 mph or the vehicle would have to have 80% less drag.

When wind resistance exceeds the traction between the tires and the road, that is your maximum speed no matter what (likely less than 100 mph for rustler)

I know it is fun to try to make something go fast that shouldn't but be warned that it will cost A LOT of money and time, and if you do not do a few calculations, trial and error will be endless. The other people who think they are shooting for 100 mph in a rusty will very likely not actually get there, so there really isnt anything to worry about in terms of competition. Just shoot for the highest possible speed you can get and be satified with that. Once you realize that you may have to shorten the A-arms so the wheels fit underneath a nice compact body, and that the front end has to be virtually weightless, there may be nothing left that resembles the original vehicle.

If I knew this a bit earlier... I'm also doing speedruns, it's with a Vendetta 1:18, and yes, every time I drive there get's something loose, stuck, there overheats something etc. And it is really disappointing every time I have to cycle back to home for just 5 minutes of fun. I'm trying to get 62MPH with my Vendetta with a Quark 80B ESC and a Mamba 8000kv motor on 3S. I know what problems I've got, but I haven't got enough money at the time because I'm only 15 and I'm building a brushless LST 1:8 and that thing is VERY expensive

Anyway, to go ontopic, the car looks awesome IMO! When will you make a movie from it? I also have a Rustler VXL, I love the car, but I can't even imagine how it would be driving that car at 100MPH!

Good luck with your speedruns, and be carefull

Thanks Byte, I have some below average video already on youtube. The last run was using a friends camera & when I have that footage I'll be posting...it should sound good!

Good luck with yours. Have a look at www.rc-isc.com it might interest you

Here's the video of the lastest effort

80.2mph

It's incredible what speeds some people get. The fastest Vendetta I know is the one from Nic Case (82MPH) and there are some other vendetta owners who get speeds of 70+ MPH.
One question about that ISC; where are those speedruns? I can't find any place on that website where the event is been held.

I really like how your car looks! It's very simple, but I like it  Ohhh, and the sound if you give full throttle, that's just awesome, I really love the electric speedrun sound

ISC is relatively new, their first event is coming up April 29 & being held at the Encino veladrome. An additional event is being planned for later 2009, location TBA. I'd watch the site if you're keen

Yeah the Rustler is simple, a good one to learn on I guess. The sound's good isn't it!

Encino Veladrome is somewhere in the US, right? (google) I would love to see a speedrun event in real, but it is too far away from me to travel. (Living in the Netherlands, Europe)
Do you maybe know some other speedruns events maybe, that are held in Europe?

To go ontopic: How do you think to reach the 100Mph? With this setup, or a other one?

PBO 04.07.2009 08:12 AM

ROSSA

This is the UK site. AJ Lovering (ziggy12345) founded ROSSA & he'd love to hear from you I'm sure. They have events planned for 2009 also

I'm confident I'll get 100mph with this setup if I continue tuning. I've only really had a few runs, so there's another level or two of development left. I don't have any data recording yet nor am I using a gyro, or any motor timing changes which leave a lot of room IMO

Many thanks for the site! I'll look around at that site, looks good.

Ok, I'll wait till you get some updates. Goodluck!

87.0mph today...with a crash caused by a fist sized hole in the road

I've installed new steel yokes but until parts arrive I'm still running the stock sliders with cable ties around the ends, they performed without failure today

Edit: I did use a cheapo gyro today also but I believe it was to sensitive and may have reduced the speed available?

I'll post the video soon

Raze ST Truggy 04.12.2009 09:59 AM

Almost 90mph, what damage did the crash cause? Loose any vital parts? I hit a curb so hard motor first last week that the R/X stopped working. Good luck on getting to 100mph. How fast do you think this thing will go?

-Brian

PBO 04.12.2009 07:40 PM

Hey Brian, I hope 105mph is possible. Here's some stills of the damage while I sort out video 'issues'...

nitrostarter 04.12.2009 11:04 PM

Hmm... looks like you had fun!! Sorry about the lost but I can't wait to see 87mph!

What's_nitro? 04.13.2009 02:52 AM

Be careful man! Just a *bit* faster and you know what happens! I'd hate to see you lose your truck like that....

PBO 04.13.2009 05:09 AM

Finally part #1...100mph might have been an easier task!

Part # 1

Part 2 overnight by my time

What's_nitro? 04.13.2009 07:32 PM

You had a close call with the sidewalk there... It could have been disasterous! That truck is quick for sure, as if we couldn't already tell it was.

PBO 04.13.2009 10:35 PM

It got really, really close to the gutter...

Part 2

What's_nitro? 04.13.2009 11:00 PM

Aaaaannndddd then it went into the gutter.... I almost  when I heard the crash! It looked really good flying by the camera. You had a good angle on it.

PBO 06.03.2009 06:19 PM

For the "Rustler" fans, I'll be running again this weekend

I've installed the new version MIP's & will be running 4S2P 6600...everything else is much the same however I'll be advancing the timing a little to see what I can wring out of the TP cells

I will at some stage see how long the MMM will cope with 8S also. Does anyone have any opinions about how long it will last?

1) Why?
2) Your MMM --> :angel:

PBO 06.03.2009 08:50 PM

Haha good to know I've got an esc angel!!

I've heard/read of others doing short runs on up to 10S without damage to the MMM. I also used my series plug late one night by mistake after a few repairs during a bench test without any problems...I'm always gentle on the bench for obvious reasons

Basically, I'd like to understand what the MMM is capable of running in the "real world"

What's_nitro? 06.03.2009 09:03 PM

Well, in the "real world" it's rated for 6s. I can't understand why you would try to run it 33% over the rated voltage. I take it you will run the same motor? Same gearing? If one of those doesn't change it's gonna be toast. If not when you accelerate, then when you brake. Sorry to sound so "glass half empty" but you're basically testing to see whether you can waste $220. $150 for the ESC and $70 for the replacement. Plus shipping.

PBO 06.03.2009 09:31 PM

You may be right?

Nobody believed I could run stock sliders to 87mph (must admit I surprised myself too), in fact most RC people are skeptical of almost everything until proven wrong. I'm not out to prove anything to anyone or to build a better box but I enjoy the odd careful experiment. If it all goes wrong, well I guess the V2 will end up in the junk box & a V3 will be ordered

What's_nitro? 06.03.2009 09:36 PM

Well then I say good luck to you! Just make sure you get a vid!

lincpimp 06.03.2009 09:43 PM

If/when you cook that MMM, I will give you 20 bucks for it!

PBO 06.03.2009 09:57 PM

Thanks esc angel, video will be done...if & when

Linc you're on for the 20 if it happens!

Ok, And I even throw in another 10 bucks for shipping and some Kleenex to dry your eyes!!!!

Best of luck with the testing!

OZ-RUSTLER 06.04.2009 03:28 AM

What day you going PBO?

PBO 06.04.2009 03:33 AM

Hey OZ, I'm thinking Monday based on the forecast...

Saturday Fine. Mostly sunny.

City: Min: 9 Max: 20
West: Min: 5 Max: 19

Sunday Chance shower.

City: Min: 9 Max: 19
West: Min: 5 Max: 18

Monday Fine.

City: Min: 10 Max: 19
West: Min: 7 Max: 18

No 8S runs though...not just yet!

OZ-RUSTLER 06.04.2009 03:38 AM

Let me know which day and I'll be there.

PBO 06.04.2009 03:41 AM

I'll PM the day before

PBO 06.08.2009 05:45 AM

No speed run but a bit of showing off pegging the throttle from a standing start with my new MIP's saw the end of my transmission gears...the MIP's stood up to the twin 8' stripes down the road

The first and obviously the last time I've done that...and I know I should know better but seeing those stripes on the road tomorrow morning will be worth it!!

Freakycrawler 11.28.2009 01:59 PM

Any updates, this thing is a huge inspiration for my new project.

Can i borrow your front suspension concept?

Thanks for the build!

Good luck.:yipi:

PBO 11.29.2009 02:07 PM

Sure FC, borrow whatever you like & good luck to you...post your progress if you can

Freakycrawler 11.29.2009 02:17 PM

Sure thing, Wont be a pure speed beast though
