Super Lightweight 1/8th scale buggy.

now let the fun began

first off, I'm going for a <7lb buggy that is still grossly overpowered, and will make a 15min main. From what I’ve read the xray is the lightest buggy out there...

I have the time/equipment to make my own chassis/parts.

IDK if I want to do a single batt(everything else), duel batt(caster), or an "under the driveshaft"(
Durango) layout. any opinions?

I have an RX8 esc, but what about motor?? maybe a 1509, Novak HV(14mm rotor), or a 1412...

batt voltage??

upgrades??

no matter what I do, I will probably end up making my own chassis from 4mm CF and integrating the batt tray into the chassis(think 1/10 truck)

I'm very interested, how is your project going? what do you have so far? and how much do you weigh in at?

I'm running the Hyper 9E with Complete Matrix Concepts Inc Carbon Fiber Chassis, Shock Towers, Radio Tray, Center diff-Top Plate, Rear Chassis Brace, and Ackerman arm. The chassis alone is almost 1/2 the weight of the stock metal chassis, has more flex than the stock metal chassis, and is quite strong as well. Robert of Matrix Concepts has been making carbon fiber chassis for the Losi 8ight Buggies and Trugies for just over four years now, and not one chassis has broke. I've not weighed my buggy yet, but it's quite light. Light enough to run the 1409 1Y motor and not get hot. The motor did break because the magnet was defective, Steve Neu is fixing it as we speak. The motor runs between 125 to 151 degrees. and I've been using the Mamba Monster Speed Control. Though I just purchased the Mamba Max Pro ESC which will also bring weight down, as well. Please let me know how this project is doing. Pictures and such would be very interesting to see as well. In fact, I have many pictures of my carbon fiber Hyper 9e, if you would like to see them, please let me know and I can post them up. Have a great day, and I'm looking forward to hearing how this project is doing :)

I still don't have a battery, but the chassis and motor should be here this week.

I decided to go with a tekin 1400kv over a 15/1409 because the track is a tight indoor track, and I will need the smoothness of the sensors...

MindThoughts 08.16.2010 07:22 PM

Mamba Max Pro ESC, Sensored.

Sounds great. Thank you for the update. Will you be using the Mamba Max Pro sensored ESC? have you considered using all aluminum screws to help bring the weight down? I'm going to go with all aluminum screws and if any break, I'll replace those with a stronger material screw.

whitrzac 08.17.2010 12:41 AM

yes, I will be using an MMp.

RC4wd has an awesome sale on TI screws right now ;)

mihael 08.17.2010 05:55 AM

hi there

i own a 808 2010 and this week will come my 808e. i am thinking about try a 3s set up with 3s hardcase lipos ( 3800 45C 11.1v 360 gramm) and a NEU 1412 2750kv) and a mmpro controller
this would give a good weight i think

i drive always 4s with the tekin motor in my buggy. it runs great, but my old electric buggy ( asso rc8be) ist toooooo heavy for a buggy.

so is 3s no option?

Thank you for this information, I was going to run Titanium, before it was suggested to me by a pro racer to give Aluminum screws a try, and to only replace the screws that break(if any) with a stronger material screw.

That's awesome, 3cell with 1412 1Y should work great. That's the first motor castle creations suggest to me, before I asked about the 1409 1Y 3600kv, which is insane fast on one 3cell lipo Thunder Power 50c 5200mah. And temp range is from 125 degrees to 151 degrees, which is great.

PS. A 3cell lipo should work great with your setup, super fast, and definitely lighter than a 4cell Lipo of same mah, capacity.

PPS. How much does your buggy weigh?

whitrzac 08.21.2010 02:40 AM

race starts in 12hrs:sleep:

the CF chassis weighs more than my 808 chassis, but having the alloy chassis at 1.5mm in places is never good...

hi there

it was a little bit boring today becase i am waiting for my xray 808e.
so i go and try the complete middle diff with motormont, middle diff and diff holder from the losi brshless truggy on my xb 808 2010. with modifikation it will fit and the next good thing is. i can drive my smart diff and plastik spur gear from the losi truggy on it. the 808 buggy has like the asso rc8 b the truggy ratio. so it will fit

the next cool thing is, that the losi batterx holder will also fit on the 808. so i cancel my order for the new 808e and try my bild with the losi parts. i just need a body. i thing the body from losi will fit. but i hope i can get this nice new 808e body

pics will folow when i start with the work

White, your chassis was actually heavier than stock?

because the stock one is 2-3 seasons old and worn down to 1.5mm in spots...

AMorgan 08.23.2010 11:06 AM

that makes sense. Thanks, Whit. I think I'm about to give up on the whole carbon chassis idea...

in 3 weeks I went from middle of the B to 2nd qualifier in the 1/8 class...:yipi:

has there been any solution to the rear pinion bearing problems? I'v had to replace mine every other week:gasp:

the MMP+1400+5s 4100mah combo has been getting me 15min but the pack is D E A D after that race... I would bump it to 6s, but finding a 4100mah EP neu cell is proving a little difficult:whip:...

buggy wights 3498g with my 4100 5s, and 3443g with my 6s 2650mah

AKA 7.7lbs, and 7.6lbs:na:

I could easily drop another 1/2lb if I would clean it, get a new body(covered in shoogoo) and spend some time/$$ lightening a few parts...

whitrzac 04.13.2011 05:21 PM

I'll just leave these here...

Thats awesome whitrzac! Are you going to run this setup outdoors at MARCCA this summer?

PS: My Iota DLS-27-25 just arrived and I have a Powerlab 8 on order. I look forward to 21 amp charges on my hyperion lipos. :intello:
