Ah yes, 40072...
Thats one of the reasons it took me so long- one place says the shocks they fit at 12/13mm bore, others suggest they fit the larger 16mm bore shocks. I looked at the violator manual and it suggests the shocks are the smaller size, but various site listings have them as being for the larger shocks = mucho confusion. Nay problem though, I'll see how they feel once they arrive. |

Yeah, I'll wait and see.
Update: The lightweight chassis rails have arrived :yipi: Need to get some oven cleaner before I can strip & install them, so photos will follow at that point. Funny thing though, or cool thing I should say- they cost me $120, yet the nice person/shop in Japan I bought them from put $16.70 on the customs label! Hah, dude saved me about £20-30 in import, VAT & handling charges- my faith in humanity is restored once again... :mdr: |
who are the light weight chassis rails made by........
|
Tamiya themselves:
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=53520 http://www.rcworld.co.kr/admin/product_middle/2945.jpg None on ebay at present, I got the last set... |
Did you get the blue ones? Or black? Not that it matters- it'll look fine either way.
|
They are both blue - one is just a black & white picture...
They will be silver/natural in a few hours- just finishing work & off to get some oven cleaner. :yipi: |
|
Really- you can see its the same picture, just greyscale; they do that with alot of pictures for some reason, usually older items that are discontinued.
Anyway, here is the result of my labours (besides dried out skin from the oven cleaner, must buy some rubber gloves to replace the ones riddled with holes....): http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan21.jpg Funny though, if there were black ones, I may well have kept them black & just installed them unharmed... http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan22.jpg After 2x 20 minute treatments of Mr Muscle oven cleaner (aerosol foam spray). http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan23.jpg Surface finish- 99% of the anodizing is gone, just some black/grey residue caused by the oven cleaner. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan24.jpg After a light rub down with some 00 grade steel wool & wd40. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan25.jpg Surface finish- shiny :mdr: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan26.jpg Comparison. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan27.jpg Bigger comparison- I like the lightweight chassis' design much more. |
|
Me too....
|
Me 3, Much more handsome design.
|
That's a very nice build you got there Neil:yes:... can't wait to see the finished product.
|
Anything new dawg?
|
That thing is gonna be mean:surprised:!! Nice build Neil!
|
Current status:
Waiting on parts. Its been about 2 weeks since I ordered them, so they should start arriving this week/ early next week. In the mean time, heres some nostalgia for you: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KUswOl6g7Dw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KUswOl6g7Dw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Thats from the first TXT-1 project, way back when.... |
Looks great Neil..look forward to seeing the finished product
|
Good times:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan30.jpg NewEra parts arrived, along with the first pair of shocks. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan31.jpg Had to use a 1mm thick shim behind the lower links for clearance, otherwise the rod ends prevent the center skid mounts from bolting in place- big rodends.... http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan32.jpg ....cause problems. They fouled the center skid, preventing it from bolting to the mounts. Only solutions were either to use some standoffs like in the photo, or to remove some material from each corner of the skid. Only a couple of mm need to be removed, so I may tackle that at a later point- took the easy option for the time being (still looks & works fine). http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan33.jpg Cantilevers give an additional 2 holes on the shock end/side, and the option to go in or out one hole further on the push rod end/side. I will play around with that further once I get the rest of the metal parts installed. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan34.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan35.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan36.jpg And there she sits. I didnt bother installing the front & rear skids as theres not much point, gonna wait until the lower axle guards arrive (next week?) and then I shall do my trademark mod to the front skid (see: previous TXT-1 project). Laters  |
Neil, looking at the close-up pic of the center skid mounting, would it make sense to mount it upside down- so that it bends downward and clears the rod ends? Or would that still not provide enough clearance?
|
Yeah, I thought about that, but its still not quite enough clearnance & looks rather weird too- I think it'll be fine as it is for the time being.
Interim update: God bless saturday deliveries- my knuckles, body posts & servo mounts arrived. I have to strip the blue anodizing off the latter two items, then I'll post up some pics on monday or tuesday; got my Dad's birthday Sunday evening so we're going out for a meal and drinks. Hes.... 60-something years old.... |
Huzzar for oven cleaner fumes! :D
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan37.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan38.jpg Hotracing knuckles http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan39.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan40.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan41.jpg Ah yes, oven cleaner, my old friend... http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan42.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan43.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan44.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan45.jpg The results, nice an shiney parts. I couldnt get every bit of blue anodizing off the servo mounts and body posts, but 99% is close enough- you wont see the blue bits left on the body posts as they as covered by the brace. Just waiting on the axle guard mounts, then next month I will be ordering the tranny, servo and lipos and a few other little bits and pieces (spare rx for my trusty laser 6 radio). |
:surprised: WOW... that's coming well Neil... I want one!!!
|
"Ah yes, oven cleaner, my old friend..."
Jeezis Neil you aren't huffing it are you? |
Ofcourse not...
Shock-tastic update: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan46.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan47.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan48.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan49.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan50.jpg http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...Mulligan51.jpg Interesting comparison to the stock shocks- slightly longer body & overall length, but about the same diameter; the stockers have a longer spring though, and if Im not mistaken they feel slightly stiffer than the springs on the Ofna 9.5pro (#40052) shocks. I may experiment with swapping the springs over to see if they work better once the truck is up and running, as I prefer stiffer suspension- kinda need it on the solid axle rigs like this to keep the wheels planted and prevent the blasted thing from keeling over to one side under power. Just waiting for my M.I.A. axle guards to turn up then I can start playing with the ride height and what not, then next month order the tranny, lipos and servo etc. |
The build is coming along swimmingly Neil, looks Fantastic !
Ofna offers a wide variety of springs for their shocks so if stiffer is nessasary you should be able to find them easy enough. I'm really looking forward to seeing video of the truck complete and running, HURRY UP !  |
I mostly have monster trucks (maxxes, savages, mgt, LST's) but nothin says monster like a solid axle truck. It just looks mean.
Can you throw some good power through those axles? I may be tempted to build one. |
I dont have a huge amount of faith in the axles, well, the gears specifically; they are cast metal, so will wear down alot quicker than steel gears. Thats something Im gonna find out about (durability) as I use the truck and give it a throrough bit of stick up and down banks and what-not. If the axles/gears do give up the ghost, then I will either see what I can do about replacements (Chrismechanic seems rather brilliant at making gears for his emaxx tranny in any number of materials), or I will bite a very large bullet and swap over to some 1/5 scale axles from Rc4wd.com- they have alloy madforce axles that use a 1/8 diff, or they have other 1/5 scale metal axles on their other site...
Time will tell, but I would like a fairly powerful solid axle truck, just for the sheer epicness of it  |
|
Vulcan cannons; mini guns on steroids...
|
Any updates on this truck?
|
Negatory..
I contacted Bizarre Hobbies about the M.I.A. axle brace do-dars, and they said wait until the end of the month, then contact them again & they will 'take further action'; Im assuming that means put a claim in for the lost items & send me out some more. Otherwise, just waiting till next month so that I can buy me a shiney new 1518 motor, the servo, spare rx & the 3905 tranny. Only 3 more days... |
gears
hi neil/all...nice build so far. if you need any gears making, we will talk. p.m. me mate
|
Stop reading my mind. They are pretty small gears inside- the main ones that concern me are little bevel gears that tansfer drive 90° from the propshaft to the diff gear. I know normal gears would be pretty easy for you, just wandering if bevel gears would be tricky or not? If they do fail, I'll know who to talk to anyway so thanks
Little update: Just spent obscene amounts of money last night on the next batch if parts: 1518 motor = $157.99 + $32.50 shipping ( I expect customs to jump on that for sure, so add another £30-40 to cover import, vat & handling charges.. :diablo: ) 3905 tranny = £27.89 + £5.45 shipping ( got a dispatch email form the retailer earlier- they have marked the value on the package as $17, I sh!t you not  God I love ebay some times, saves me another £10-15 I reckon ) 3905 slipper parts = £11.64 + £1.00 shipping, from Modelsport.co.uk 3905 single motor mount = £4.90 + £2.63 ( couldnt find them on ebay until I just searched for the part #, weird....). Kershaw Designs FireHammer MT clear unpainted shell = £31.26 including postage ( I wanted something a little bigger than the normal maxx sized shells, will actually look a bit more like a scale truck ( like NickRummy's ), more impossing...). Hobbycity Zippy Flightmax 5000mah 40C 5s lipos x 2 = £115.36 + £25.24 shipping ( value will be marked at 10% of actual price as per the option on the ordering page- hope to Christ customs dont get suspicious otherwise I'll get raped for customs fees etc... again). GWS 8ch Dual Conv 40mhz FM Receiver = err, ~$25ish. Need to get some crystals for it, will look for them later this evening- most likely will get some hitec items. EC5 5mm Connector (Pair) x 7 = ~$9ish. They look great, and are much tidier than my current wiring setup, plus easier to grip and will last longer vs the standard 5.5mm bullets I have currently (different springy mechanism- like how the smaller 3mm version feel and work that came on my hobbyshitty motors before I swapped them over to 5.5mm bullets). Will redo all gear with them, then maybe flogg the bullets after cleaning them up a bit- I have loads so will sell them as a job lot on ebay unless anyone wants them for dirt cheap? So yeah, spent alot of money- wasnt planning on getting the motor this month, but I couldnt pass up on the black friday deal at Castle- just means that in January I will just have to get the esc and servo (when its back in stock (mid december apparently), was -2 when I went to order last night; grrrr) resulting in a cheaper month. Esc will most likely be an MMM, cant see the MMPro liking the 1518 much in a ~15lb truck. Guess I'll need someof Mike's pinions too really, though havent crunched the numbers on that just yet- I can now though since I know all the ratios and the voltage & motor kv I'll be using etc; will have my supper of fish cakes and chips (English chips that is ), an Angel Delight for dessert (ButterScotch flavour, mmmmm) first then will hit up BrianG's calculator and do some sums. Laters. :intello: |
WOW, Sounds like everything is coming right along.
Should be a potent truck w/the motor and 5s :gasp: Looking forward to seeing more pics when item starts trickleing in from your order. Especially how that huge body will look on the chassis ?? |
bevel gears anybody?
hi neil/all...funny you should say that cause i was just reading up about bevel gears before i turned on my laptop, talking to redshift reminded me to look up various types of cuts to bevel gears and so far ive not found any type that looks like a traxxas diff pinion (im shure this is why they fail so easy-along with being mounted in plastic).
well to cut a gear i would need it with the teeth on so no good sending it to me worn with a few teeth missing. need to find the module of the cog and a good external diameter measurement also helps. so how small are we talking? have you got a diameter? bevel gears are a little more tricky and time consuming to make. also may have to purchase a cutter (depending on module and how many teeth this gear has), are yours diecast? there will be a visible line around half the gear if so, horibble grey soft shite. probly wont put up with brushless on 5s mate:whistle: and whats all this talk of fish n chips and angel delight, is bad enough having to look at all those shiny new bits. if i want the munchies neil, ill watch the cooking channel :mdr: |
Yeah, diecast for sure- I know they wont last too long, but it'll be a blast while they do
As for size, I dont have an exact measurement, but there is a good picture on page 7 of the manual: http://www.tamiya.com/english/rc/rcmanual/txt1.pdf Just to make things harder, they are splined on the inside, so a new shaft with maybe a cross pin to hold the gear in place would be needed- I can foresee that getting rather expensive and complicated with all the tooling and setup required.. I think I'd be inclinded to go with rc4wd.com Kyosho Madforce axles, then get some insides from donar axles/ spare parts etc. I would have thought though that Tamiya woudl have released a TXT-2 by now- been a long time without a big, straight axle truck from them... |
Neil
I just had to post some pics of my TXT-1 with the MMM installed and running. I just hope the MMM can keep up with 2 (2s 5000 30c) in parallel lipos and 2 540 brushed motors. lol I hope you find some stronger axle gears because I have Neu 1527 1.5d (1500kv) that needs a good home. BTW this is one of two TXT-1 that I own, same setup on both trucks. If you look close you will notice that I'm running the truck backwards (lipos in front). Still testing to see if I like that way. Truck has some nasty body lean/roll without the sway bars installed too. I hope to get my extra frame on the CMM machine this week or early next to start designing a longer frame for a extended wheelbase truck. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_SANY1735.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_SANY1736.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_SANY1737.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_SANY1739.jpg |
txt-1
yes, so i see...well the pin idea is possible as id have to fabricate cutters to do a spline :gasp: which would get expensive, plus i dont have access to a shaper (just to add insult to injury), which is a machine that is really good for cutting internal splines.
both cogs are different sizes too , it gets worse :mdr:. shame a few savage diff gears or 8th scale buggy diff gears would not work  see how you go with the brushless mate... its not 5.43 in the morning, im not that sad. its 10.44 lol. |
Hmm, I actually wonder if 1/8 diff gubbins might work- it all thats required are a couple new shafts that are cross drilled for a pin, then it might be worth exploring- the other main gears would be much easier to do... much much easier.... hmmmmmmmmmm.....
Well, anyways, I got the slipper parts from modelsport in today, just gonna send another email to Bizzare hobbies to get an update on my missing axle guard thingies. |
