Just under 5 Horsepower. :gasp:

I'm thinking that pushing any kind of serious amp load on HV is gonna take a 1/5th scale or "larger" type RC.

We're looking at some serious power here guys.

Here's some figures for ya.

On 12S, and at the Max Continous amp load ratings, here's how the Ice HV Controllers stack up provided your lipos hold 3.7 volts per cell under the load:

ICE 40 amp HV ESC = 1775 watts or 2.4 horsepower
ICE 60 amp HV ESC = 2664 watts or 3.6 horsepower
ICE 80 amp HV ESC = 3552 watts or 4.8 horsepower
ICE 160 amp HV ESC = 7104 watts or 9.5 horsepower

Serious Power!

These are going to find the limits of the drivetrain parts for sure.

can you say CC powered go-cart:yipi:

I've been thinking of building one with the SHV-200 controllers but I haven't been able to find powerful enough motors that didn't cost a small fortune.

johnrobholmes 12.06.2009 12:24 PM

Astro makes some high quality motors at decent prices, but you can get bicycle hub motors for pretty cheap too. Run them stockmonkey style and you would have a cheap setup.

Brushless?

lutach 12.06.2009 08:13 PM

johnrobholmes 12.06.2009 08:14 PM

Yeah, brushless. Astro 3210 or 3220 motors can be found at astroflight.com. Pretty big "rc" style motors, industrial construction.

Search google for "9c electric bike" to get a bunch of relevant info regarding hub motors. The 9c is a popular motor that is priced very low right now, one of the best values on the market for power : cost ratio.

Unsullied_Spy 12.06.2009 08:28 PM

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm keeping an eye out on Craigslist for a go kart or small 4 wheeler with a bad engine to convert.

Steven Vaccaro 12.07.2009 04:58 PM

It would be cool to convert this to bl power.

I would like to see an option on the car software to turn the motor braking off and just run mech brakes. Especially in a 1/5 scale car. What do you guys think??

Semi Pro 12.08.2009 03:22 AM

there is ........... just set the brakeing to 0, you can do that on any mamba car esc

or set the prop folding value to 0 on an airplane esc

whitrzac 12.08.2009 02:16 PM

updates?

thomatrix 12.09.2009 03:44 PM

I read somewhere that Patrick was in China so I don't think there will be any updates the next week or so.

Even if they have just begun testing and early results are good, R&D takes time so I personally wouldn't think we will see something the next 3+ months. I'm guessing here but it would surprise me.

Well ya never know!

Patrick has a knack for surprising us in a good way!

thomatrix 12.14.2009 01:43 PM

Hi Patrick,
I see you guys are working on a lot of new exciting stuff. The new 1512, a 1717, and 2025 motors look very promising and so does this new ESC with car software. Are you making any progress?

Normally you are far better at sharing info on upcoming products so I thought I might ask ;)

We were running a Baja around today on an ICE-200 with Mamba software. A few bugs still remain (startup needs some tweaks -- different EMF sense resistors, datalogging isn't working yet, and we gotta figure out how to put a fan on it for Brian -- we know how he loves fans...)

But preliminary results look positive...

Have you had a chance to revisit testing?

Any updates yet?

billy gunn 01.17.2010 11:56 PM

Patrick, now that the holidays are behind us, and the new year is in full swing have you had a chance to do any further work/testing with the ICE160?

SV6000 01.18.2010 03:46 AM

I cant wait for this controller to be available.

I know you hate to give ETAs due to unforseen problems, but any insight on how testing is going?

I hope you can have it out by this spring.

I know what you mean, my baja is sitting here waiting for a new speedo. It's just tempting me to buy something and run it. But the snow, rain, and cold here might limit my ability to test the ICEs limits for a while.

_paralyzed_ 01.18.2010 05:31 PM

I want a 12s esc w/ car brakes so bad it hurts. I want my LST to flyyy:yes:

If you need any help testing, I have a beefed up E Revo, 8S Lipo setup with a variety of motors/gearing, ready to drop in and run.

Thanks for the update.

Bondonutz 01.18.2010 07:00 PM

DITTO, I can do 8s or 10s in a EREVO.
PICK ME, PICK ME, PICK ME !!!!!!

scarletboa 01.18.2010 08:52 PM

i can do 12s in a 1/8 10lb brushless CEN Matrix.

pick me! lol. i've had pretty good luck with my MMM escs and i would be more than happy to beta test a 12s esc on my buggy.

i would even be willing to buy an eagle tree data logger if i was picked as a beta tester.

You wouldn't need an Eagle Tree -- the ICE has built-in datalogging.

Patrick if their is any way possible I could try one of these please let me know. My race season starts next weekend. I would like to run this controller in my Truggy, MT and 1/8th buggy as well this year.

jzemaxx 01.28.2010 06:18 PM

What's the latest word on these ESC's. I have my 1st race this weekend.....need mo runtime and cooler temps!

Latest word -- still in internal Beta testing. Probably at least six more weeks before we are ready for public beta testing.

Bondonutz 01.29.2010 03:21 PM

I exchanged emails with a rep for Castle last week or so (don't remember whom it was) and it seems we have a bit of a wait yet

I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait tho !!

Will this be a firmware upgrade? Meaning can I buy the ICE and have it installed and ready then just USB the new firmware in when its avalable?

I imagine that would be a hard promise to make before the beta's start. Hopefully all goes well tho and they don't need big revisions so they can be avail quickly.

crazyjr 01.31.2010 03:21 PM

In the earlier part of this thread he said it might can be just an update, but till testing is done they won't know if there will be any need for hardware updates

Yep -- we are going to try to do it so that it could be just a software update, but at this time we aren't sure if we need to do any hardware changes.

The real issue is braking energy. If the Phx-ICE design is tough enough for braking energies (it wasn't designed to be a car controller!) then we won't need to update hardware. If we run into braking issues, we may have to tweak the design a bit, or add some external hardware.
