You're right; it does sound like big gov't, and no, I don't go for that - usually. However, this is actually for the common good, not in the interest of furthering propaganda, lining their pockets with taxpayer dollars, or covering handout costs. I have a problem when other people's poor decisions affects me. If those same people were forced to accept full responsibility for their actions (no handouts at all), then we wouldn't need govt intervention. But since that is not the case, then further action is needed.

Not sure why you're so upset by my opinion but I think you're contriving simple answers out of complex issues (of your own making) by applying rose coloured nostalgia to them

I read your post carefully, don't need to go back. You were the one who commented on the general lack of education and medical advancements then, which I have answered.

The issues you list above with contraception, infant mortality......are as big a concern today as they were back then.

And no I don't have rose colored glasses, I am basing my opinion of fact and study of the US economy. The over use of credit is a big problem, our own government doesn't get it. Where as people from my grandparents generation that went through the Great Depression did not use it. They were savers and it was very unusual for them to borrow any money save except for a car or home. Further with out all of the social programs that people are sucking from today families were stronger, they were close knit and more self reliant.

What???

I do reject the premise that the planet is in trouble, best example to me is look are Chernobyl. When that sucker melted down they said it would be a llllloooooonnnnnggggg time before it would return to normal....but in just what 25 years nature has reclaimed it.

Where did you hear this from? They have sealed the reactor in concrete and it will remain that way for a very long time, because the radio activity is still high enough to kill humans. The area around the reactor has been cleared for something like 20 miles, and no one goes near it.

KiddofSpeed does Jerry, this site has been in my favs for many years- www.elenafilatova.com

And yes it is largely uninhabitable for at least a 2 hundred
mile radius. Won't stop this chick or her Kawi, awesome site.

suicideneil 01.05.2010 07:06 PM

Thats 100% true- in ye olden days divorce was a rare thing as the government wouldnt be there to hand out cash and support to newly single mums, you had to stick together for the sake of the family, silly little arguments about money and trust wouldnt split up families. Nower days people get divorced left, right & centre knowing that the government will support them and the kids; that, and young girls get knocked up knowing the same is true- they wont have to work much, if at all until the kids reach the age of secondary school ( in the Uk ). In the mean time the kids are neglected due to lack of father & general disinterest- how many 16-17 girls do you know who want to raise a family and provide for them as best as possible? Very few is the answer, they'd rather be out every night getting pissed with their mates or sleeping around since the 'specialness' ( for lack of a better word ) of sex, aka making love has lost most of its meaning; sex is no different to kissing to alot of young people, hence the increasingly frequent number of 14 and 15 yearold parents.

Abstinance/ contraception ftw :yipi:

There is a whole series of shows called "Life after humans" that are based on the findings of Chernobyl and how fast the earth, nature, what have you will reclaim the territory. And yes you are right humans living there is out for sure, but I was using this to illustrate the resilience of both nature and our planet. I think most anything we do is temporary.

It kind of seems pointless to address what you say because you put another twist on it but...

My original 'offensive' post was in response to Harolds, you introduced 'history' with;

Further, you're making blanket opinionated statements as if they are fact. Your argument is largely just that - opinion & you're upset that others have their own that don't mirror yours

I do not agree with large families in todays society, no matter how complient the kids are

Seriously, what is your malfunction. I never said that there were no effects on humans. I personally knew 2 of the scientists that worked on the development the bomb. It was a husband and wife, he was a meteorologist and she was a mathematician. The stuff is so toxic to humans, that when she found out she was pregnant they released her from the program. I was specifically talking about the Earth's ability to rebound from human activity. That was it.

76Bentley 01.05.2010 08:28 PM

PBO lets start over. I see you location is Sydney, safe to assume that is Australia?

My point to Herold was, it was the norm in the late 1800s and early 1900s for people to come from a big family, they worked the land so they had too. My grand mother did and she was a perfectly normal, well adjusted person. Yes today it is very unusual. And if you are against it, that is fine with me. I believe in live and let live. I think people should have as many kids as they want and CAN AFFORD. It isn't fair to bring a kid into the world and have no way or desire to care for it.

As for your statement about me stating my opinion as fact. I have tried very hard to post link after link from a quality source backing up what I am talking about. The only thing I haven't been able to is about the way my grandmother's generation handled money. Your right that is opinion based on the people I have known personally from that generation that went through the Great Depression in the U.S. and they were far better with money than I am. And it is my opinion that people should try and get back to that. Save more and consume less. I actually agree with you and Harold, but for different reasons.

Hope there are no hard feelings and that the excellent discussion can continue. If one person comes to RC-Monster for fun and can walk away critically thinking about things in the World I think it is a worth while exercise.

76Bentley- I never close my mind to anything even though I know alot. I am opinionated, but my opinions change as my wealth of knowledge grows. I followed all of your links and have learned alot from this thread. I'll continue to try and get people to open there eyes and take the second step in thought, rather than accepting everything at face value. Good stuff.

Redshift- That link was awesome, I had never seen chernobyl pics or even read about it. You have definitely peaked my curiosity.

I have a simple question: How does the Duggar family negatively affect you?

Now the people living off the system and popping out babies like rabbits is a different story. Of course anyone popping out kids left and right and not taking care of them is an issue.

That's pretty close PBO. From Elena herself:

"On the Friday evening of April 25, 1986, the reactor crew at Chernobyl-4, prepared to run a test the next day to see how long the turbines would keep spinning and producing power if the electrical power supply went off line. This was a dangerous test, but it had been done before. As a part of the preparation, they disabled some critical control systems - including the automatic shutdown safety mechanisms.

Shortly after 1:00 AM on April 26, the flow of coolant water dropped and the power began to increase.

At 1:23 AM, the operator moved to shut down the reactor in its low power mode and a domino effect of previous errors caused an sharp power surge, triggering a tremendous steam explosion which blew the 1000 ton cap on the nuclear containment vessel and rised it in the air.

Some of the 211 control rods melted and then a second explosion, whose cause is still the subject of disagreement among experts, threw out fragments of the burning radioactive fuel core and allowed air to rush in - igniting several tons of graphite insulating blocks.

Once graphite starts to burn, its almost impossible to extinguish. It took 9 days and 5000 tons of sand, boron, dolomite, clay and lead dropped from helicopters to put it out. The radiation was so intense that many of those brave pilots died.

It was this graphite fire that released most of the radiation into the atmosphere and troubling spikes in atmospheric radiation were measured as far as thousands of miles away.

These were inexcusable errors of design.

The causes of the accident are described as a fateful combination of human error and imperfect technology. Andrei Sakharov said, that Chernobyl accident demonstrates that our system cannot manage modern technology.

In keeping with a long tradition of Soviet justice, they imprisoned several people who worked on that shift - regardless of their guilt. 25 from the shift died.

Radiation will stay in the Chernobyl area for tens thousand years, but humans may begin repopulating the area in about 600 years - give or take three centuries. The experts predict that, by then, the most dangerous elements will have disappeared - or been sufficiently diluted into the rest of the world's air, soil and water. If our government can somehow find the money and political will power to finance the necessary scientific research, perhaps a way will be discovered to neutralize or clean up the contamination sooner. Otherwise, our distant ancestors will have to wait untill the radiation diminishes to a tolerable level. If we use the lowest scientific estimate, that will be 300 years from now......some scientists say it may be as long as 900 years.

I think it will be 300, but people often accuse me of being an optimist."

I also remember seeing footage of prisoners being given the chance of freedom if they helped fill the damaged reactor. They were given lead coats & told to run!

Doubt any of them would be around today

JERRY2KONE 01.06.2010 01:06 AM

Actually NatGeo runs a documentory story about this. It is a one hour segment describing the whole incident, and also showing video footage of how they forced the military to close the place up using lead vests and shuvels to move all of the debris back into the reactor area, before sealing the whole thing up in a concrete casing. Each man was only allowed to work for about 90 seconds, and received more than a life time dosage of radiation. The Commander put in charge of the operation is still alive and conducts and interview explaining how he was ordered to handle the matter, because there was no one else qualified to deal with such a catastrophy. He was ashamed having to order men to do such a terrible hardship that would eventually bring them an early death, but you did not dare refuse.

This right here is proof of the "Idiocracy Theory" or also known as the "Dumbing Down of Society"

And since we are on the topic of having kids and overpopulation.....did you know that having kids is hereditary? Because if your parents didnt have kids there is a very good chance you wont have kids either!

I don't know Harold that last post looked pretty fluent in jiberish to me. My wife and I were sitting here laughing for a few minutes about your retort. Your a real hoot. Needless to say I have no idea what he was trying to tell us, but we must assume that he is not from the USA, and he is trying his best to translate what he wants to say.
