never mind,

sorry to clutter up your thread.

Good build, keep it up :)

A tube wont twist under a load where as a rod of the same diameter, like in this particular application, will. Im not a mechanical engineer, but it has to do with it having twice the surface area, inside and outside rather than a bar only having 1.

So please back that claim up with some evidence.

Don't be sorry, disscussion is a good thing, its how we learn.

I have been using brian's and v8hatche's builds as guides and when I asked v8hatch what he used for his front shaft he said this.

So since this has been working for him I figured it would be a good way to go since like I said before.
It would be cheaper and easier in the long run to make the shaft like his.
I'f say the dog bone end happened to twist off the shaft, I could just loosen the set screws and change it.

Funny thing tho, show me a monster truck (rc) that runs dog bones, that has hollow dog bones?
The only hollow ones I've ever seen were slider shafts, and we all know how easy those twist (usually plastic).

I don't know, I'll go with what I've planed out and if by chance a solid hardened steel shaft breaks I'll try tubing

Candyman2 04.02.2011 08:20 AM

You'll be ok, that hardened shaft should resist a small bomb going off!

bigsteel 04.02.2011 09:18 AM

Since yourgoing so over kill on the shaft anyways forget my post, you won't have enough power to twist that huge shaft, your weak point will be the smaller components anyway

zueslilbuddy 04.02.2011 01:26 PM

Well there will be an update tonight after all.

My aluminum diff cases showed today, I have them here at work with me lol

I just put a nice shiney coat of red paint on them and will be installing them tonight after I eat supper.

I guess the roll bar set will be here monday, oh well the diffs will take me a little time anyway.

I'll be taking them apart, inspecting them, and changing the diff oil in them while I have them out of the cases.

zueslilbuddy 04.02.2011 10:14 PM

Well on to the update.

Got my aluminum diff cases today and got them painted up earlier today.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/010-70.jpg

Old diff case off and it still looks good from this summers rebuild, the insides looked great and not even any discoloration of the diff fluid, it still was crystal clear in both diffs.
Actually I totally rebuilt them and only ran the truck 4-6 times after that.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/011-59.jpg

All ready to go back together.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/012-61.jpg

Back in place.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/013-53.jpg

Wait, What Have I Done lol

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/017-33.jpg

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/016-35.jpg

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/018-29.jpg

Had to go with the LST-2 shock tower up front also, it makes the chassis sit nice and level.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/021-21.jpg

Next update most likely will be monday evening if my roll cage comes in.

v8hatch 04.02.2011 10:56 PM

WOW your going with a bit of bling i see, looks good.

Was it sitting a bit high up the front? if so you could put some "O" rings on the shock shaft on the inside to shorten it a bit, that's what i did.

v8hatch 04.02.2011 10:58 PM

The other thing i noticed is you don't have the muggy block that sits in the bottom a-arm that sits the shock out fourther towards the wheel.

Na it was sitting with rear just a bit higher before bit i wanted to use the Shocks and arms I had on my XXLST-2, they were causing a problem with the muggy shock tower

Well it did have them before the aluminum arms and LST-2 shocks, My XXLST is going to get Muggafied with the parts I took off of the project and the blocks will be used on it.
My XXLST-2 is my speed demon monster truck lol

No worries mate, it's good to see those little things that makes it different hey, that's what it's all about making it your own.

JERRY2KONE 04.03.2011 04:04 AM

plastic

You still have a weak point in those diffs with the plastic diff cups. I would have just changed them with an aluminum diff cup while it was apart. There is still too much chance of flex once you put those diffs under power with that motor and those gears are going to eat themselves at some point and may damage your new diff cases along with them. Sorry just had to point that out. Why only go half way with the upgrade?

v8hatch 04.03.2011 04:34 AM

That's a good point, i haven't changed mine yet but so far so good.

Kind of like replacing your break calipers with the best on teh market, but still using cheap pads. Whats the point.

The second part of the equasion is that removing and taking apart diffs is one of the most tedious labor instensive jobs on our trucks. Make them right and you will not have to bother with them again, right?

Just my 2 cents. I do believe in overkill, but not just on the power side of the coin. I like making things indestructable from the start and not having to rework things a second time.

I've actually had great success with the Losi HD plastic diff cups (the ones with the metal inserts) inside my aluminum cases - and that's with a 1527 running on 8s and 10s.

In time my good man in time, its kind of a budget build, well kind of lol

I did have the diffs completely apart, they still looked new inside from this summers rebuild with all new parts and oil.

It'll go till it blows

zueslilbuddy 04.04.2011 08:43 PM

Ok well the cage did come so I got to work, still not done but got front and rear tied in, still need to tie in the center roll bar.

Set it in place to have a first look.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/001-87.jpg

Front mount in place.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/002-85.jpg

Ended up using the old wing mount for rear cage mount. Temp until I get 5b rear bumper.

http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/x...dy2/003-93.jpg

really starting to take shape.

I'll get more done soon, wing should be here tomorrow.

ZippyBasher 04.04.2011 09:04 PM

Nice Ride there zues. I like the Body/Cage. I am digging all the stretch projects around here. I did one but based on a Rustler so only 2wd.

I have been there and done that with the LST2 cups. IMHO, The HD Plastic cups are better than an Aluminum cup. You can see my thread how I just have gone through a set of Al cups in 1 run in my 13lb Maxx. Reason being is the HD cups have metal inserts and spread the bevel pin load over a greater area. The metal cups are machined after the old Non HD cups. The pin eats into the sidewall of the cup and then it toasts the bevel gears... What we need is a machined version of the HD cup with the metal inserts. Then we would be bulletproof as the Ring and Pinions are tough as hell. Mine look brand new with over a years use.

EDIT this is pasted from my Thread:

I thought the same thing about the Aluminum Nova Cups Being bulletproof. The rear cup is useless after 1 pack and I just took the CD cup out to refill with a lighter fluid and give it a thorough inspection and it actually is starting to wear pin slots in the side of the cup as well...(at least a dozen runs or so) I can try to get a picture but Its not that cool  Well there goes $40.

I will just go back to the Losi XXL HD plastic cup. I looked at the one I was using for over a year in the rear diff and it looks new...:whip: the ring and pinion also look brand new. I guess those little metal inserts in the XXL really save the cup. I think a CNC cup designed after the XXL cup would be bulletproof, but not cheap to get CNC'd...

Mate i'm lovin it, it's looking good. Did you mount the center of the roll cage?

Ran out of time for tinkering last night, so didn't get quite that far.
I'll be putting more time in it tonight after work.
I try to get an hour or so a night in the ''Man Cave'' if possible, its my me time

v8hatch 04.05.2011 06:08 AM

I'm hearing you man......i like my me time too.

zueslilbuddy 04.05.2011 09:39 AM

Well just weighed it, comes in at 14lbs even with 6s installed.
I'm figuring it will come in at aprox. 14.5lbs when completed or just a little under.

zueslilbuddy 04.06.2011 12:20 PM

Few pics with the new wing.

Nice build. How did you cut that channel in half for the chassis?

zueslilbuddy 04.09.2011 02:15 PM

I used my table saw, any carbon tip blade will cut it, aluminum is kinda soft.

Video running 2wd

Awesome conversion. Do you plan on making it 4wd? Your steering and acceleration will greatly improve. :):):):)

v8hatch 04.09.2011 10:29 PM

Well done dude, it's nice driving a buggy you built yourself hey especially when it works so well.

Get that front shaft in and you will love how well it handles.

Oh and tape up those wheel before you rip another one aparts lol...

They were my XXLST wheels, they are were already glued before I got them saddly.
Well I got one more set, I'll try to be a little easier on it and try to make them last lol

Its awesome to drive it, what power :surprised:
Getting used to it being 2wd but can't wait until I can make it 4wd.

v8hatch 04.11.2011 05:59 AM

Sorry mate you asked about how i mounted the undertray here is the pic of it, hopw it helps.

Great action shots mate, you think it covers ground quick now wait till it's 4x4 and gets some traction. It's going really well anyway, handles quite well too. You have done a really good job on it, well done.

JERRY2KONE 04.15.2011 05:48 AM

Thanks for sharing.

The snapshots are great, but you really have to work on your video shotting. Plus the video dating is September/2008. I guess your camera needs a calendar update. With all of that rear tire spin it looks like that rig could use some weight in the backend. Thanks for sharing.

zueslilbuddy 04.15.2011 07:14 AM

Ya vid camera is one of those venom mini cam knock off's attached to my radio, no screen to tell me if its pointed rite, hit or miss type of thing.
I try to keep it pointed at the action, just had it angled up too high I guess.

The snap shots are even more of a chore as I have to drive one handed and snap pics with the other hand, I really need a cameraman lol

You wouldn't believe how many times I almost got hit taking the pics :D

x-y 04.16.2011 08:32 AM

great photos ..... but I think you need 4x4 ;)

zueslilbuddy 04.20.2011 09:49 AM

Well got a new body for it, 4 coats of liquid mask last night, now to figure our a paint scheme and get it squirted.

My camera died so I'll do a walk-around video after paintjob is done.

zueslilbuddy 04.22.2011 10:00 PM

Heres video, sorry lighting is bad, I'll get some pics when my new used camera comes.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_WxO3_K-i00" allowfullscreen="" width="480" frameborder="0" height="390"></iframe>

Should look alright at 50mph lol

v8hatch 04.23.2011 06:34 AM

It's looking great mate, well done on the build.

It's a great feeling building it yourself isn't it.

zueslilbuddy 04.23.2011 08:45 AM

Ya it is, makes running it have a whole new feeling.
Plus the fact of having basicly a one of a kind (our builds are all different) makes it even cooler.

Hope to have my new used camera soon, I'll get some better pics.

Came out pretty good for an uber quick paint job with no plan at its begining.

I still have loads of work to do to this thing, I just got it to where I could run it and the build slowed down.
Battery holders, front shaft and other things still need to be done, but all in due time, no rush.
Still going over how I want things laid out.

v8hatch 04.26.2011 02:13 AM

Good to hear mate, it will evolve into what you want over time, that's the best thing about building it yourself.

zueslilbuddy 04.27.2011 06:04 AM

OK my camera finally is here so I took a few pics, still not used to all the settings on this camera, but I think I'm going to like it.
