That design is not derived directly from any of the previous designs in this thread. It uses a floor pan that is an integral part of the chassis, creating a three plate chassis and hopefully leading to significant gains in torsional rigidity. I think there's still a lot of weight that could be shed, depending on the purpose (racing or bashing) without much of a loss in stiffness.

Now I'm designing a race car with a team at UC Berkeley, majoring in mechanical engineering, and having a blast. I don't know if there's much RC in my future, but if someone was legitimately interested in buying a chassis, maybe we could work something out.

That project actually did turn out, Ben. The 1st set got lost by the anodize company(not mine, but the owner who sent it on his own). There were a couple minor errors in the tvp file, and the motor mounts were modified and beefed up a bit as well. I fixed re-made the parts, only to have them returned in the mail (again, the end user left the country and missed the delivery, so they were returned). Funny thing - the new tvps sat here for about 8 or so months and the owner contacted me with a brother here in the states, so delivery was made once and for all about a week or so ago. Someone will be driving that Savage conept one day. :)
I attached a few early pictures of the 1st version(after machining, but before cleaning them up - just a mock assembly). :)

That looks really good. Hoe thick are those tvps?

RC-Monster Mike 12.07.2008 12:44 PM

Almost 5mm thick (.1875" or 4.76mm) - thicker than they needed to be - and made from 7075. :)

That just made my day Mike! I had no idea they'd been machined! Did you ever fit the bulkheads to them? Maybe you could send me an email with the fixes so I can modify my CAD?

Wow, that thing must be incredibly strong. How/where are the batteries going to be mounted?

traxxasbasher13 12.07.2008 03:30 PM

Are the batteries going to be out side of the TVP's or inside?

BitHed 12.08.2008 10:47 AM

...thats not TOO concept :D Thats what we are working towards on E-Sav.com with the 'old' (ahem) E-Savage and the Flux :) Looks great though...

Keep in mind that was designed almost two years ago :)

The battery positioning depends on the number and type of cells you run. Putting them next to the motor (with some heat shielding of course) is the best solution. That keeps the mass towards the middle of the car which benefits handling. If you have too many cells, you'd have to add battery trays on the outside of the chassis.

Sweet. It is nice to see it accually made and ready to finish assembly.
