huge thanks to crazyphantom for helping get this this far.

CrazyPhantom 08.15.2006 10:33 PM

Hey,

No problem Nick. I think I am going to get one of those motor mounts machined just to put on my shelf. It looks SOOOO perdy.HAHA

What you guys think so far?

squeeforever 08.15.2006 10:40 PM

Looks great! How much would it be to have one of those motor mounts machined?

thanks.
I can't quote a motor mount right now, but this could possibly turn into a conversion kit at some point.. I'll lyk when this project's done.

A4DTM 08.18.2006 11:51 PM

got the parts today, and everything turned out great. nothing's mounted, because, none of the holes are tapped yet, as I havn't decided on screws.
the motor mount needs some filing, because the 540c's endbell has a slight lip by the bearing, and I completely overlooked it when I designed it. any future mounts won't have this problem.
now need $ to get controller, and then batts.

comments?

I dig them totally fat tires you got in back.
It is looking pretty good. The pics are not real clear but can see them.
Nice job. The lips on the motors are easy to over look.

Mike.L 08.19.2006 09:56 AM

holy $hit lots of batterys! that should fly, what does it weigh in at now?

CrazyPhantom 08.20.2006 07:12 PM

Looks like it all came together well. Also, your camera sucks ;). Did the left side battery plate make it under the bottom part of the belt? It looks totally sick tho. Can you get a pic with the motor mount on the chassis?

Keep us updated.

-Joe

A4DTM 08.21.2006 01:34 AM

belt clearance is about 6mm, just about perfect.
i have to file down one of the car's braces to fit the motor mount in. no structural loss or anything like that. it's just un-needed material.
once I get it assembled, I'll take it to work to have our camera guy take a few shots.

Mike.L 08.21.2006 12:29 PM

cant wait for those shots:004: Its really coming along great:018:

Cool!

who machined those parts?
And was it machined from SW files? any idea what cad/cam was used?

A4DTM 08.25.2006 07:46 PM

thanks, Joe (crazy phantom) helped me get the parts made, I just sent him the SW files, and the $, he took care of the rest for me.

Mike.L 08.25.2006 08:02 PM

does anyone know where to get the software to make 3-d objects, (parts). do you have to buy a disk or can i get it of the internet?

squeeforever 08.25.2006 08:43 PM

Search :p...Here ya go...

CrazyPhantom 08.26.2006 09:10 AM

Nick used Solidworks 2006 Professional(also what I use) which is like a 2500$ program. But e-machineshop is definately a cheap alternative, but I dont know if the CNC mill program will read a EMS file?

Serum 08.26.2006 10:10 AM

No, a CNC can use the ems files. and the DXF files emachine shop creates are crippled, a 2d design is made from different height of layers. so from the front they seem closed, which they are not..

What software do you use to translate the sw files to cam/g-code? And do you save the SW file as a step/iges first?

CrazyPhantom 08.27.2006 01:41 AM

I dont know which program my machinest uses, but I send the files to him as .iges files.

Are you intrested in getting something machined?

Mike.L 08.27.2006 09:55 PM

no but it would be nice to know how to desinge things if i needed something, i tryed and fiddled with the program squee linked me, man even making something simple needs alot of work to be put in. tryed to make a shock tower. FAILED:D

squeeforever 08.27.2006 10:00 PM

It's not really that hard. I thought it was like Latin 2 days ago, and now I just finished a motor mount...

A4DTM 08.28.2006 03:23 AM

few more pics.

note my delema... the disk brake won't allow the motor to move any closer to the rear layshaft, so I either need to shave the motor's can a bit, find a larger pinion/spur gear, or do away with the mechanical brake, or a combination of the three.. OR, use a smaller dia motor? decisions decisions..
but do take note of how perfectly close the mount comes to the 2speed. I couldn't be happier with it.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8444/img4110yt5.jpg

the battery mount just barely clears the belt. refer back to the renderings, and you'll see that the two center pieces lock together to get an idea of how close they are.

coolhandcountry 08.28.2006 08:14 AM

Can you design a pinion that will use both first and second gear. That would be pretty cool. Shave a littl off the motor fins. I think that would fix you right up.

Mike.L 08.28.2006 09:59 AM

what pinion T size do you have now?

Re~Mix 08.28.2006 10:52 AM

I know that Constructor over on RCCA designed a pinion to use a two speed, he may be able to help you out with that. I think I would ditch the mechanical brakes, although you may need those at the high speeds.

MetalMan 08.28.2006 11:18 AM

If he ditches the mechanical brake, then he would also have to ditch the two speed and lock it into first or second.

CrazyPhantom 08.28.2006 08:48 PM

The reason he is wanting to keep the mech. brake is that with using the motor brake, it puts a huge back draw onto the controller, and that is what ususally inturn frys them.

TeamTEOR 08.30.2006 01:45 PM

Looks Good Nick, seems like you have been busy. Did you see if there was available stuff to mabey do a belt drive between the motor and the input shaft?

A4DTM 08.30.2006 07:08 PM

Tom, i've always got my away message on, but am usually at my computer.. seems to be the opposite w/ you :P

I hadn't thought of belt drive actually, but I'm gonna try and make this as simplistic as possible. i took off the 2speed last night, and the gear keys to the layshaft with a single roll pin and eclip. I went to the hobbyshop about 10min ago, but they're closed due to illness :( I figure a 51t or 52t M1 gear should work after filing down the motor's fins a bit. I'm working on redesigning the battery mounts at the moment, and trying to find a 2nd point of contact, so they'll be more stable.. not alot of options due to the belt height being just above the chassis. time will tell heh.
at least I know you got my message, be on more often, I'm curious what you've been up to. anything ever come of the MAME cabinet?

edit.
oooh
I just saw this link that cemetery_gates posted. http://www.scriptasylum.com/rc_speed.html

the car comes with a 49t first gear, and 45t second.
and I just saw that mike's got 16t, 18t, and 20t M1 5mm pinions. when I bought my motor a while ago, 14t was the largest I could find, so that's what I've got at the moment.

this looks promising. the 540c-9l on 5s lipo will be around 62k rpm, so i know that that's a little high, no need to inform me, but here's what the speed calc comes up with.

spur | pinion | speed

49 | 16 | 75.14 MPH
49 | 18 | 84.54 MPH
49 | 20 | 93.93 MPH

45 | 16 | 81.82 MPH
45 | 18 | 92.05 MPH
45 | 20 | 102.28 MPH

fdr is around 6:1. anyone know what kind of gearing i "should" be running? I don't even know what say an emaxx's fdr is. but this car will be lighter, and have alot less rotating mass from the tires.

Cool, I am glad Mike carries the pinions you have been looking for.

But..... I think have you beat:005:

Serum 08.31.2006 02:11 PM

Too bad you need a controller that does 170.000 rpm..

CrazyPhantom 08.31.2006 02:38 PM

LOL, Its just a joke

Mike.L 08.31.2006 08:03 PM

that would be the fastest vechicle on earth i presume:D lol nice one!!

yeah... back on topic

A4DTM 09.01.2006 08:37 PM

ok, guys, tell me if this looks good. i want to make sure I'm not going to have any problems w/ batteries/ubec/balancer/li-saver/charger all working together.

is the li-saver nessecary with the 125b?

BrianG 09.01.2006 08:39 PM

You won't need the li-saver since the Quark has a built-in low voltage cutoff.

CrazyPhantom 09.01.2006 11:40 PM

LOL, did you expect to pay over $1,000 on this project?
