You title the thread getting intimate with a motor :rules:, then talked about your injured hand , what else were you expecting......

I am just surprised linc didn't jump on it first, he must be turning over a new leaf , or just hiding his true feelings at the moment :diablo:

Linc has a hand fettish and didn't want to be taken advantage of in this situation...

Better to have a hand fetish than a paw fetish, nitrosquirter!

Sounds like linc and nitro have been getting a little intimate with each other here lately.

Looks like someone has been playing with the thread title again, I know Arct1k wouldn't do a thing like that.....

I love how Linc distorts my name in every post.... Makes me wonder his abilities. No wonder he can't finish project, he can't read the instructions...

Update!

First off - can't say I would recommend this motor, unfortunately.

Mine essentially died during the first set of batteries. It temp'd over 200 deg. F, closer to 210. I went to run it today, and it did, but 1/3 speed, until smoke poured out of the motor. It had been demagged from the first run.

So, $120 + shipping down the drain in the first 15 minutes. That damn $50 KB-45 lasted longer... I think I will just go for another KB-45, the 11XL (1000 kv) and see how that fares.

Another option would be the Medusa 36-80-1100, but honestly I don't think that will have the balls to push around the ~14lb XLB to 40-45mph.

gotta love KB motors. i just opened up my used 1600kv 8xl and found a couple cpieces of magnet on the end of the rotor. i hooked it up to my vxl esc (lol) and ran it unloaded on a 9.6v battery. in the 30 seconds i ran it, it heated up to 90F. i'm most likey going to order a 1400kv 12L when i order my esc. i'm stuck with KB motors for now as my motor mount only fits them.

metalman, how did you make that adaptor? i want to be able to run 25mm bolt pattern motors.

MetalMan 05.17.2009 04:07 AM

That heat you experienced from running it unloaded is pretty normal... they are probably 90% ineffecient at no-load.

Made the adapter out of 1/4" aluminum, drilled/tapped 4 holes to 4mm thread/30mm bolt spacing, and drilled 4 holes to 3mm/25mm spacing. Then I cut it with a scroll saw and filed it to shape.

C'mon guys, we need a 4th question!

suicideneil 05.17.2009 01:01 PM

4) was it caused by a rotary tool?

I would definately say try an 80mm medusa- it can push my ~13lb truck to 40mph or so, and thats with 4lb+ of rotating mass, so if you has sensible shoes on the XLB, I reckon it would do suprizingly well

TexasSP 05.17.2009 01:25 PM

A shame that motor didn't pan out. I would hope you are going to send it back for a replacement though? Possibly from OSE? although I have know knowledge of their CS.

Good point - I can try an 80mm Medusa, 'cuz I have one laying around already... the one from my Savage (which is currently in pieces awaiting a design change/rebuild). Thanks for the idea!

Will Kershaw Designs have his hands full with the combo he's offering?

The feigao 580 motor is kinda odd if you ask me. It is still a 2 pole motor, and does not seem to have much benefit over the kb45 as far as design goes.

Plus for a little bit more you can score an 80mm medusa. Better design and smaller diameter so it may fit in more places than that big ole feigao. Plus it should run cooler and not work the lipos as hard. Inefficient motors work everything harder.
