Just got in the last thomsons part, seapost!

rchippie 10.07.2010 11:27 AM

Nice. I'm still working on getting a couple of things, like this http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Ritchey-WCS-...item519528fffa, & this http://cgi.ebay.com/REYNOLDS-ASSAULT...item3cb12554b3. I'm also looking at getting Carbon bars as well.

agarabaghi 10.07.2010 01:27 PM

Any reason for the ritchy? Even the Thomson elite 100mm x2 is 50grams lighter.

Yes There is Two reasons. One it's Carbon fiber, i just love the look of Raw Carbon Fiber . Two it should help interrupt the road vibrations between the forks & handle bars. Thus giving a ride with less discomfort in my hands.

agarabaghi 10.07.2010 04:50 PM

Do you have a carbon fork? Take a look at the 3T ergonova handle bar if your having discomfort in your hands.

Where do you normally have your hands? drops? hoods?

Yes my bike has a Carbon frame & fork. I mainly ride on the Brake hoods, but also use the drops. I have no real discomfort in my hands . I'm just looking to all ways improve the ride.

Hey guys, sorry to hijack your thread but I have question about a bike frame a family friend gave my parents. The bike frame says TREK, are these any good? If it is are they worth restoring? I have little knowledge of bikes, other than the Mongoose bmx bike I used to ride back in highschool. I don't know if it's a mountain bike or onroad bike. I'll try to get some pics of the frame.

pinkpanda3310 10.09.2010 07:03 AM

I don't know much about bikes either but Hippie was looking at a trek I believe-

I had another ride today, might be my last chance before the family comes home from Japan on thursday night. I would like to keep up the habbit, I enjoy it, it's good for me, and I get to do a little bonding with Dad, which I haven't really done since Mum died.

My brother is overseas at the moment so it was just the two of us, I could give it a bit more without me brother LOL. We did 31.6 mile @ an average of 16.7mph. The last 13 mile we tagged along with a group Dad rides with sometimes when he is in Perth. They do 43 mile @ an average of 43mph (I think). I kept up with them so I am a little proud of myself considering it has been years since I was this interested in cycling. You guys probably don't need all this detail but I'm getting more excited with each ride, I want to make it my new hobby :yipi:

I have to say my a$$ was killing me though. I rode bro's bike, the carbon one, nice bike and I like the position of his handle bars but he put the seat in a vice and sqeezed it so it is very rounded at the back. Suffice to say I will never ride his bike again, at least not with that seat. If all bike's were that uncomfortable I would go and buy bike shorts today. I will get some if I can make the rides a regular thing when the family is home.

This thread is about bicycles, so your not high jacking the thread. Yes Trek is a a very nice bike Brand. I ride a Trek Madone 6.9 red. Post a pic so we can see what you have. As for restoring the bike it depends how much is needed to complete the bike.

Thats a nice ride. I did not ride today, because i volunteered at the Breast cancer ride sponsored by the Trek bike shop in my area.

BlackWood 10.09.2010 04:20 PM

Heres some pics, the frames still straight but theres rust spots in some places where it looks like paint or powdercoat flaked off.

ya i would just throw that away and start over.

rchippie 10.09.2010 04:44 PM

That is a Trek single track 950. I had that bike in the late 80's & early 90's. It was a AWSOME bike. I dont think i would put any money into it, unless you get a crack deal on some used parts in good shape. When new i believe it cost around $500 - $600. The Derailleurs & cranks were very very good for there time. They still make the LX componets to this day.

BlackWood 10.09.2010 05:01 PM

Thanks for the info guys, it is in rough shape and probably not worth saving so off to the scrapyard.

How come your route has a couple of loops in it? Did you really ride in a circle? Do you go solo most of the time?

Kudos to you Hippie for supporting the community. Do you do group rides often?

Your welcome . I try to do group rides every week. I just have to get out of bed & actually go .

Another new Ride

I bought another bike. This one is a Track style or ( Fixed gear) bike, with a Flip Flop hub. Which allows me to use a Bmx style Freewheel. I have been told, by knowledgeable people. That a Fixed gear bike can help you smooth out your pedal stroke over time. So that is what i plan on doing when i ride my rollers. I tried riding it with the Fixed gear on the Street, but that would not be safe in Traffic. Here is the Bike i bought.

Dunno I followed the designated course, as it was a metric during Mt. Dora's bike festival...

What exactly do you mean by smooth out the stroke? I notice my Dad does more revs than me and my brother does less. Seems to fit on the scale of how we ride with each other ie- Dad rides more so is better at it.

Dad also got another retro bike. The gear lever is down on the frame and is in dire need of a service. It doesn't shift enough to make the full range of gears. I had a ride on it 2 weeks ago. It was often easier to keep it one gear  Very comfortable bike though. The main sproket was even out of round to supposedly help with the pedal stroke somehow

Be at it again tomorrow morning :yipi:

According to the expert's most people pedal in a square motion or choppy, instead of a circle which is the desired motion smooth. Most people only use force on the down stroke &do not pull on the up stroke. The chainring on your dads new bike sounds like a Shimano biopace chainring. Watch this video. this is considered a very smooth pedal stroke.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opIHaO_mt0M. This is Taylor phinney. This video is of one of the best Climbers in the world. His name is Marco Pantani ( the Pirate). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66iXTQio7wk. He raced the Tour de France & the Giro de italia in the 90's.

pinkpanda3310 11.07.2010 03:35 AM

So a smooth stroke has even pressure through out the stroke. Thanks Hippie.

The ride this morning was OK. We could've done better, at least me and Dad could've  Dad rode his relic, just so he could say he did it all in one gear  Which meant I blitzed them both on the hills :whip:

Correct my understanding of what is considered a smooth pedal stroke, is consistent even pressure on both the up & down stroke. watch the First video i posted above. He is considered to have a very smooth pedal stroke. which relic did your Dad ride ? post a pic of it when you can. I'm getting my single speed ready for it's first ride.

pinkpanda3310 11.07.2010 09:05 PM

I watched the video. Not that I can really notice the difference by watching but I understand what you mean

I'll try to remember to take a pic next week.

pinkpanda3310 11.13.2010 09:04 AM

I don't get to ride this week :( other stuff going on. However, I did get to take a pic of his relic on my phone. Those are Dad's wrinkley old fingers in the corner.

http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=770

There is an offroad trek coming up and he has submitted his application to compete with 2 other blokes. There are more applicants than positions available though. So he is looking at forking out another $3-4K for a flash offroader. His $300 job is apparently not up to spec

rchippie 11.13.2010 04:53 PM

What brand is the White bike ?. I rode 47 miles today, with a average of 18 mph & a max of 28.6. Before today i have not rode my Madone in a month.

rchippie 11.14.2010 09:34 PM

I rode another 20 miles today.

Apparently it's a mystery?! Neither Dad nor the previous owner know what make it is. It has been fitted with shimano 600 gear and durace cable clips. He's fixed up the gears so they change better. I can't wait for next sundays ride, 'cause I missed a week

Simano 600 was very very good for it's time. I believe the 600 line became ultegra line in the late 80's or early 90's. I rode my rollers for 1/2 hr or (10) miles, with my Madone, yesterday. I also rode my Fixed gear bike on my Trainer for a 1/2 hr yesterday as well.

pinkpanda3310 11.19.2010 09:38 AM

I always figured those rollers were for pro's, warm ups etc...
Do you use them cause it's cold there? Those things don't appeal to me, might as well be on an excersize bike. I like the whole travelling element of riding.

In winter I would have considered riding midday but early morning is a must now. Today's temp was 39C, sunday will be 32C with a possible shower.

Rollers help teach you bike handling skills, plus it lets you ride your bike indoors when it's dark or cold outside. You have to pay attention when riding rollers or you will break your neck .

Panda

I rode 25 miles last Saturday & Sunday for a total of 50. With 3 bridge climbs each way each day. On Monday i only rode 12 miles on my Rollers trying out a new Seat. Tuesday i did not ride. On Wednesday i rode another 25 trying out that new seat. On the way back, i stopped by the LBS & changed the seat for a different Model. They have a Demo program, were you give them a copy of your CC, then you can test the seat for 3 or 4 days with out being charged. The new one is a little narrower & has less padding, it felt better than the other seat. On Thursday the 25th ( Turkey day), i rode 40 miles trying out the second new Seat. So since last Saturday i have rode 127 miles. Here is a pic of the new Seat.

That's a great service the LBS offers. Are you putting in more miles to make up for being a bad boy over thanks giving and Xmas:whip: I take it a bridge climb is much like a small hill??

I got severely dissappointed on sunday. My bro said he wasn't coming, I thought 'YES, I can give it a bit more' but then Dad said he invited his GF. It was a pleasant casual ride but less than half the usual distance. Definitley not the workout I was hoping for. It has crossed my mind to go for a group ride before work during the week. The early early morning is kind of scaring me though. I need to drive to Dad's house then ride.

 no Im just trying to get better. These are much larger than hills in my opinion. I will see if i can find pics for you. Yes it is a great service they provide. The owner is a former NYC Bicycle messenger & Professional racer.. At lest you got to ride on Sunday.

That first bridge looks like a doozi

This is the largest brdge we go over
http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgu...26tbs%3Disch:1

It doesn't rise much. Not a real challenge. Some of the hills we do are more of a challenge. Most are reasonably short and sharp. I like these 'cause I've been cruising (more often than not) I've got lots of energy to give it full throttle up the hill. I can pass a few people this way but I have to hold up on the other side to wait for bro :sarcastic: He can cruise a good speed but hills are his enemy:whip:

rchippie 11.27.2010 12:40 PM

Out of all the Bridges i listed. The Second one seems to cause me the most issues. I rode 35 miles this morning. The wind was bad, especially going down the Bridges. It would grab my bike & move me at least 6 inches or more. I rode the FR brake most of the way down . There was nothing to block the wind on the Bridges, since they were over the water. I have been trying to keep my cadence around 90 +.

bigboi146 11.28.2010 02:07 AM

Hey hippie how do you like your single speed? It's all I ride now. Here's a couple of pics. The white and black bike is an SE draft without all of the stickers. It has a funny story to it. I went to drop off clothes at the dry cleaners once and it got stolen. After going to the cops they pretty much said that they couldn't do anything for me. After three months and another bike later I found it chained up to a pole about 8 blocks away. After waiting for the "owner" and a long discussion I ended up giving the guy $15 for the bike. He said he bought it so it spared him an butt whooping. lol.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c2...6/_DSC0145.jpg

My replacement bike was a windsor clockwork until I changed pretty much every part and repainted it.

It's pretty cool, but it takes a while to get used to the fixed gear . Both of your fixed gear bike look nice.
