Got a little bit done tonight. Have not had a chance to sit down in probably a week and a half at the hobby table so it was good to get a little progress done.
Pics!.....Enjoy..... http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...lemidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ntmidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...rxmidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...upmidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...lemidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...rxmidbuild.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...armidbuild.JPG |
Great job
Just a great job Joe. Love the way this truck looks. Another UE work of art, but a one of a kind project.
|
absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!
|
|
Damn that truck is nice looking. Are you actually going to use it once it's done?
I don't think I would be able to get it all dirty and scratched up. It's a work of art. Nice job. Nick |

WOW! That is really looking nice!

Wing mount
Hey Joe can you shoot me a LINK for that wing mount? I like the way it hooks up to the Maxx towers.
|
Appears to be either a Dace or DieMaker Dave wing mount for the VBS towered bulks- I wish you luck finding one of those for sale anywhere...

Contact that fella on the UE forum Jerry, he will be able to make you one. |
I thank everybody for their comments ! I very much appreciate it!!
Hooked up the steering servo today and it is a Robot servo so it had a Aluminum disc on it instead of a arm. Hooked it up and it will not turn the knuckles very far to one side, instead of extending the link out farther the circle just makes it start to tuck back into the servo limiting the throw. I thought maybe it would have enough but nope! So I have a blue aluminum arm in some Greased Lightning overnight to strip the blue off of it. Waiting on some Black M4 and M5 nuts to come in the mail. So I got the shoes out to balance and glue up. http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/.../InstaFlex.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...therslicks.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...icksdrying.JPG Gonna chill out for a few then pop the rubber bands off. Stay tuned..... |

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...to3_326242.jpg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...to5_612929.jpg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...to6_327560.jpg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/.../6/Photo10.jpg Probably had the biggest freak out moment of the entire build. I had glued the tires up and never ever once looked at the rims and noticed that they are directional. For some reason I thought they were standard pattern but they indeed have a directional pattern to them. I looked and sure enough two were swapped opposite but luckily I was able to swap the rears and I had actually mounted and glued them up the correct way. I was very relieved to say the least!! How much of a bummer that would have been to dis mount them already...... |
This is build is like the rare-est or the rare. Uber rare parts, rare color combo. Kudo's to you sir. Two questions, the battery hold downs, custom? UE? And are the slicks directional? Always loved the look of those big ole slicks on a Maxx truck.
|
Those are the UE Lightning Cradles, those were a alternative to the regular straps. Another impossible part to find and paid another testicle for them, no problem though as I am done having kids anyway......
Nope those Panthers are not directional. They seemed to be pretty hard to find until recently. I went on Ebay because I am planning one more UE build and I wanted another set of these for it so they would match this truck. Found a couple sellers that had 10+ sets for sale.....go figure.... Thanks for the kind words Neil! Going to sit tonight and get my stress level peaked drilling holes in the body :oh:....wish me luck! I have to take my front shocks back off and drop the front mounts down some and the holding bolt will not come out with the piggybacks on. Then electronics are going in.... |
Got the shell mounted and I had to take the front HCR cross member off the front posts. The connecting bolt heads would hit the lines on the hood where the cowl forms, I even tried set screws and the whole piece actually kept the body up too far to mount on these posts. It is just the awkward angle of the cowl lines and I don't think there would be a way to fix it and still use them. Could go with taller body posts....but......I don't think that would look too good.
Does it need to be lowered more?? Have the small hint of the chassis on the bottom edge of the shell? The rear can only go down just a tad more because it is already on the very top of the shocks and VBS posts so I would not gain much on the back end. I could pretty much drop it just enough to barely see the line of the chassis or slam the front end but I think doing that the lower edge of the shell being off level would look worse. Wondered what you all think. It will probably look totally different outside too....haha http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...riversside.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...lonprofile.JPG |
The truck looks great. Love the truggy body on it.
If you could get it to cover the exposed chassic under the body that would be idea. Your never going to cover the rear of it with that body. I'd love to try a set of those tires, they would be good for drag racing. Keep up the great work. Nick |

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290615029457...84.m1497.l2649 I used these foams for them, these foams are great. They fit superb and are firm yet still spongy enough to allow the tire to give: http://www.ebay.com/itm/320776987950...84.m1497.l2649 I have a complete set for truck # 3 when I get that one started. |
I got the electronics all installed and ready to go. I now need to get a Tekin Hotwire and some different LiPo's. I had traded a set of Clod wheels and tires for a really nice pair of 3S LiPo's specifically for this truck and they are too big. They won't fit under the G1 plate on the one side of the truck so I have to find some that will fit. Or just maybe go with 2S in series for 4S, I even tried all of my 2S packs and none of them will fit as I have all hard case and they are too wide for the cradles. I might even try some 3S LiFe packs for it, I have my eye on some Turnigy ones that look nice but I have to make sure they are going to fit first.
Gear installed : Spektrum SR3300T Tekin RX8 ESC Tekin 2250KV Motor Hitec HSR-5990TG Servo w/ Lunsford Ti link http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ideprofile.JPG http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...transsetup.JPG I took a Black sharpie to the sides of the slipper pads since these are the high temp ones and with that light vanilla color it stuck out pretty good, now you cannot even see them. I used all black and red wire instead of the factory blue wire that comes with the ESC. Well I think it is just about finished until testing comes. I have to adjust a little toe on the front end and get some different packs that fit. What a drag the ones I have don't fit. |
The truck looks great. Nice neat job on the wiring.
Are you planning on running the truck on 3s or 4s? I'm pretty sure 6s with that motor is going to be a little much. Keep up the great work. Nick |
Quote:
I have never run one of these Tekin 1/8 scale systems so if you think 6S would be a bit much maybe I should just run 2 - 2S packs for 4S ?? I have a series connector on it already so I can run a pack on both sides. What do you think about running the dual 3S LiFe packs here : http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html Or maybe 2 of these : http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html I appreciate your comments and suggestions, I have not had too many 1/8 scale high power brushless power plants yet. |
The Tekin 2000kv & 2250kv motors are meant to be run on 4s and even 3s. If you wanted to run 6s you should be looking for the lower kv motors like the 1350 or another lower kv truggy motor.
I myself have not had much luck with either of those batteries that you linked to. I would recommend a Reedy 2s or another brand 2s pack that will fit your battery location. I would definettly be looking for two 2s packs and forget about the 3s all together. Good luck, Nick |

I've been running my RX8 T82000kv combo in my D8T for about 6-8 months now and it's been great. Tons of power on 4s, plenty of runtime and nothing ever gets hot. I don't even run any fans on the motor or ESC at all.
Good luck, Nick |
Got my new Turnigy LiFe packs today. I wanted to go with these packs because for the no fire aspect on this truck! DO NOT want this thing burnt to a crisp because of some LiPo malfunction! :gasp:
Also been dying to test one of these packs in one of my Race Clods to see what kind of laps I can lay down with one. Pics! Enjoy!! Got the Goo Gone out and took the labels off so I could have the wires on the same side of the chassis for symmetrical purposes.....hehe  http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...abelremove.jpg Got the Deans installed : http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...sinstalled.jpg Into the chassis, going to have to have a slight piece of foam under them to keep them from moving around. I had to install some spacers under the cradle posts to get them up far enough to secure with the clip. I used some of the stand offs you get with a set of SuperShocks and took a Black Sharpie to em! But they fit great. http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...ledprofile.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...kinstalled.jpg Put a Dace anodize Servo Clamp on the top of the servo case to harness the wire up. This Robot Servo had a threaded mount on top of the case so it was a perfect install. http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...owireclamp.jpg Time to see how much she weighs... http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...ngweighout.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...eightfinal.jpg Next is to get a Tekin Hotwire so I can program the ESC and test it out! Thanks everybody for following my build thread! |
I have posted and said this before, but your Lightning & Predator are the absolute best built and best looking trucks I have ever seen, and I am sure they are the best in the world...nothing short of double-perfection!
My Lightning has everything yours does (all of the rarest & most hard to find parts, most brand-new, including a full set of new Ultramaxxed transmission gears), but yours blows mine out of the water! Seriously, man...you have done a superb job building these trucks, and I am sure they will remain kings of the hill for a VERY long time! The colors and color contrast you chose are just amazing, and I truly don't believe they can ever be duplicated...some people may try, but they will never be able to come close to what you have done, seriously! Anyway, you were talking about Titanium-Nitride coating a few parts, and I have a solution for some of them that is cheap and easy...the hingepins, you could use a couple different things to get the look without spending a fortune; [1] Losi & Sportwerks both make Ti-Ni hingepins that are the same diameter as the Maxx hingepins, and they come in a ton of different lengths. If you can't find the exact length you need, simply cut down a longer pin for a perfect fit! [2] There are a few different manufacturers that make Ti-Ni coated hex-drivers that are the correct diameter, so they can be cut down to get the right length that you need. Plus, you may not even have to buy the hex-drivers, because I am sure there are a few people who have some with stripped tips who would be glad to donate them, I know I have a few that I would give to you. If you don't want the Gold Ti-Ni, I think the Rainbow or Purple Passion Ti-Ni would look absolutely amazing on both the Hingepins and the CVDs! http://eltraglobal.co.uk/images/Colo...%20Coating.jpg Just my $0.02... |
Hey thanks a lot for the compliments man!! It truly is appreciated for you to say such awesome things about my rigs. :yipi: I really enjoy the hobby and these just make it all so much fun.
Good info on the Hinge Pin substitutions. I will look into those. I really just want to get the CVD's and the Pillow Balls done. Those are the most noticeable pieces that really stand out but having the pins done also just adds to the cool factor so I am for sure going to check it out and pick some up. I like the Rainbow for the Ti coating. I wish they made a really sweet Red Ti coating, have a really deep hue of Red on those CVD's but with the pop of the Rainbow would be just awesome. I do not do purple or pink.....haha |
I hear ya...Red Ti-Ni would, in fact, be awesome...but the Rainbow Ti-Ni would look very good, as well as give the Parts (and the whole Truck) a Unique look that would add that "Over the Top" look & feel!
Of course, you could just Anodize the Hingepins (Red, or any other Color, if they are Titanium), as well as Anodize the CVDs (Red, or any other Color), since they ARE Titanium...that would be awesome! As for the Pillow-Balls (Pivot-Balls, as some people call them), Ti-Ni coating them would be my first choice, especially in Gold or Rainbow, but if they are Titanium, Anodizing them in off-setting colors (Black PBs in the upper Red Arms & Red PBs in the lower Black Arms) would be my second choice...but, of course, they are not my parts or trucks, they're yours, so it's obviously up to you what you do, not me. I also think there is another option for the Hingepins, Pillow-Balls & CVDs; Ti-Ni coat all of them in GOLD...that would not only be Completely Awesome, it would give the truck(s) a Super-High-End look, a look of Royalty even! Against all of the Red & Black Anodizing, the Gold Anodized Pins, PBs & CVDs would just make the truck "POP!" One last thing for now; Since you don't plan on bashing or beating the crap out of these trucks, I have another "colorful" idea for you...you could replace all of the Black and/or Silver Steel Screws with Pre-Anodized Aluminum Screws! You can get high-quality Aluminum Screws in many different colors, including; Red, Black & Gold, which would finish off the trucks PERFECTLY! You could use Red Screws where they screw into Black Parts, use Black Screws where they screw into Red Parts, and use Gold Screws where they screw into Silver Parts...like the Front, Center & Rear Skidplates, and anywhere else where the Red or Black Screws just don't look good. To ease your mind a bit, I Jump & Bash the snot out of my highly-modified RCM Brushless Revo 3.3 (MMM/2200kV), and it's got a bunch of FullForce Blue-Anodized Aluminum Screws holding it together, and I have never broken or stripped any of its Aluminum Screws! I think they are 7075-T6 Aluminum Screws, but I know that they are crazy-strong & durable! If you are worried about using Aluminum Screws, you could always buy the Great Assembly (GA) 12.9 Grade Blue-Anodized Steel Screws and have them stripped back to Silver, then Re-Anodized Red, Black & Gold...just an idea! P.S: I just thought of something else...you should get a pair of the Aluminum Upper-Rear Link-Ends that Ofna makes (for the Monster Pirate I think) and Anodize them Red to replace the stock Black Plastic Racer-X Link-Ends (Ball-Ends)...they look nothing short of amazing, and they would look even better Anodized Red!!! These are what I'm talking about... http://pics.offroadextremes.com/Links.jpg |
You know I really like that idea of the Black Pillow Balls in the upper arms and Red in the lower arms. I do want to get my skids anodized Black sometime but nobody around here does it and I will continue to look until I find a company that does. Being Titanium it is a different process than aluminum and all the shops around here don't dabble in Ti yet.
That is the thing with Ti and all the anodizing and coating colors is there is not a specific Black and Red. http://www.danco.net/page-photos/TITANIUM-COLORS2.jpg http://anodicprocesstech.net/metal_f...olor_strip.gif One thing with getting additional parts anodized Red is the fact that it would not be the same batch and to get the color to match perfectly would be the first and foremost concern. Unless I could be right there with the truck in hand to get the same color, some of those Red parts come out very light and bright while this is a dark red. Gold on everything....hmmmm Maybe, something to think about. I have one set of the Aluminum rear Racer X links and they are going on # 3 build. I have not unveiled that truck just yet but will soon. Gotta get my plan set in place first. |
Well, since no one near you does titanium anodizing, you could always get a set of Traxxas 7075-T6 Aluminum Pillow-Balls and have them Anodized Red & Black, and since you won't be bashing/beating on the truck, the Aluminum PBs will hold up just fine!
Also...if you do find a place that Anodizes Titanium, you could have them "Test Anodize" an inexpensive Titanium Turnbuckle (or Turnbuckles) in various shades of Red & Black until they match the other Red & Black Anodized Parts on the truck...and you can take the truck with you (if the place is semi-local), or ship one of the Red Parts & one of the Black Parts to them (if the place is far away), so that they have the exact colors that they need to match. I know I have been replying a lot, and throwing out a lot of ideas, I just absolutely love your trucks and what you have done with them...and I've just been trying to help, as much, or in any way that I can. If it's just too much, or I'm getting on your nerves, just let me know and I will shut-up...heh! And yes...if Anodizing is out of the question, Ti-Ni coating the Hingepins, Pillow-Balls and CVDs Gold would look absolutely AMAZING! Again, just $0.02 of my cents... |
Heck no man this is precisely what discussion forums are for!! :rules: Chatting about what we love and how to keep this the best hobby for many years to come. I absolutely love talking about these custom builds.
Whatever I end up doing I will post it up and share it with you all. |

Man, that is the sweetest rig I have ever laid eyes on...seriously! I can't wait to see it run on the ground, just make sure you don't scratch that baby! ;)
I'm glad I'm not getting on your nerves, because I am always thinking about things you could do to both your Lightning & your Predator... Would you mind if I did sort of the same thing except replace your red anodized parts with blue anodized parts? I think Black & Blue with the GA Blue 12.9 Screws will look awesome on my Lightning (finally building another one)...with some Ti-Ni thrown in there for some accent. There is only one local coating place around here so I have to call them and see if they do Anodizing & Titanium-Nitride Coating. Again, your rigs are simply amazing!!! |
Dude it is your truck man, you can do with it what you want. All I ask is that you not start your build in my thread and start a build thread of your own. Sounds like it will be sweet, I have seen a Blue and Black truck and yes it is AWESOME!
Looks like this won't be drove till we get our track up for our first club race. We just got hit with a snow storm last night so outside is done for the year I think. |
I want to say Thank You to Heath for his continued support of our hobby and Cow RC's great customer service.
I present to you the Mad Cow F-650! : http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...650/Photo2.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...50/Photo15.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...650/Photo5.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...650/Photo6.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...50/Photo16.jpg http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/...50/Photo11.jpg Dace/UE Predator Custom EMaxx   Paint By Rockthrasher graphics! :yipi: Sickness by Cow RC! :diablo: |
Joe, that came out awesome! Looks incredible!
|
I think you just turned the cool factor up to about 11! The scale of the body and tires and the ride height are just awesome.
|
:surprised:Just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!I love it!!!!! What tires are those?
