Erm, Castle 1520 or 1717? Still $$$, but cheaper than a real neu. Other than that, some sort of outrunner maybe, but getting the gearing/rpms/voltage right might be a pain...

killajb 11.23.2009 11:20 PM

Brushless Boy..

I'm going to experiment with a few larger outrunner motors from Hobby City on my Redcat Rampage. I'll post results as soon as I get things all hooked up. I'm also using the Sentillion ESC and figure that with up to 12s to play with, I have room to ramp up the voltage on a direct drive (instead of center diff) setup with two packs on either side of the mounted motor. We'll see..

You'll have my attention on that killa.

Startup will be your enemy. If you could figure out how to utilize some sort of clutch on each end of the motor, well that would work great. Esc startup is on the of big hurdles to direct to diff drive, and plane escs do not have very good startup profiles anyways...

Building a brushless 1/5 is expensive no matter what. Better save up and buy the right stuff or not do it at all. If you want a Ferrari...

Unsullied_Spy 11.24.2009 02:13 PM

Large scalers are pricey, electric large scale is going to cost even more. I think the big outrunners from HobbyCity are the best bet other than a 2215 or maybe a Neu 1527.

I really do not see why a properly setup 1/5 scale truck could not use a 1527... Still need to be HV, to benefit from the lower amp draw, but a 1527 should be ok. I plan to run a 1527 2y on my 1/5 scale savage on 10-12s lipo.

Should be fine, but AFAIK it has never been done before. IIRC the 1527 is rated to 3,500 watts which should be plenty.

lutach 11.24.2009 03:40 PM

I ran my 1521/1Y on my heavy BPP truggy on 10S twice and it was just ground shaking power. The ESC (Schulze 40.160) was a bit warmer then usual and the motor was about the same temp. which seemed like 130-150F. It's all a matter of finding the correct load the ESC and motor will like. I've found it on a few set up ranging from 1/18-1/8 scale and I haven't changed much. The most important thing I found was to get a data logger to see how many amps a particular set up is asking for. It might not be accurate, but it's plenty to determine what kind of batteries one would need to match the amp draw.

Any news Mike?

_paralyzed_ 12.18.2009 05:44 PM

Lookout Mike, kershaw has a 5b conversion kit slated for mid January. Pump these suckers out and get the sales!

there is no pic, just a logo stating "hpi 5b and 5t conversion coming mid-january"

it's at kershawdesigns.com but Mike's will be better!

bigboi146 12.18.2009 10:47 PM

I second that

thomatrix 12.19.2009 03:51 AM

I can assure you that I will wait for the one Mike is putting out. I already bought everything I need so just waiting for the kit...

Electric Eel 01.01.2010 09:42 PM

Any updates on this? I have a 5T that can, hopefully, use this kit as well. It's just sitting there begging for brushless power! C'mon Mike, BRING IT ON!!!!

lincpimp 01.02.2010 01:48 AM

Saw some pics of the 5b kit in one of the rc rags recently... Might have been rc driver that is the one I subscribe to. Must be cummin soon!

thomatrix 01.03.2010 09:33 AM

Any news will be much appreciated. I have already bought motor, batteries, ESC and so on so I am of course hoping for an upcoming release :)

Electric Eel 01.04.2010 05:53 PM

OMG! I just saw the Fine Design 5T conversion. What a piece of junk! Please hurry Mike!

Electric Eel 01.11.2010 04:58 PM

Keeping this thread bumped. Kershaw comes out with their design Wednesday. It features a plastic spur gear. Don't know about that, hope it's better than their Savage direct drive unit.

Electric Eel 01.13.2010 11:24 AM

Talked to Dan at Kershaw. He said a few more weeks on the kits. I think I'll get one and try a double motor combo. Two 1521's with two MMM's on 6S each. Experimenting is often more fun than actually driving! Also, my neighbors are ready to kill me after my last run with my new DDM V2 Dom pipe.

thomatrix 01.20.2010 02:44 PM

Hi Mike,
could you shed some light on how the development is going and when we can expect to see the kit on the market?

RC-Monster Mike 01.21.2010 11:54 AM

My conversion will be ready in a few weeks. It isn't just a motor mount, but rather a complete kit that will be transform the car to an E-machine rather than simply convert it. :)

crazyjr 01.21.2010 12:54 PM

So this will be like chassis and all? With proper weight displacement? Hopefully you will be the leader

Electric Eel 01.21.2010 02:44 PM

Oh Yeah! Mike, please, please, please post some pictures. Just a few, please. I loved to be teased. Even an AutoCad drawing would be good.

thomatrix 01.21.2010 04:55 PM

Appreciate the update Mike. Will it be available as a motor mount only to those that has all other necessary parts?

Thanks

sabongi 01.25.2010 09:56 AM

Still waiting...

Electric Eel 01.25.2010 06:13 PM

Only 10 more days to the release. Can't wait!

Electric Eel 01.26.2010 09:30 AM

Nine days left.

thomatrix 01.27.2010 02:45 AM

Just out of curiosity, where did you get that release date from that you are doing a countdown on?

Electric Eel 01.27.2010 06:13 AM

My conversion will be ready in a few weeks (Posted on the 21st). It isn't just a motor mount, but rather a complete kit that will be transform the car to an E-machine rather than simply convert it. :)

thomatrix, it won't be ready. I just like to bust Mike's b@lls.

thomatrix 01.27.2010 06:40 AM

Perhaps you should raise the bar a little and try not sounding like a 12yo ;) I have certainly asked for updates in the past but cut the man some slack - this is a little over the edge...

Electric Eel 01.27.2010 08:03 AM

Just having some fun. Mike actually promised in an 11-22-09 post that they would "be ready in a week." You can always complain to the moderators, maybe they will remove my posts. Here RC-Monster, we are irreverent and light hearted. Best not to take yourself too seriously or take offense too easily. Remember, Linc lies in wait!

Electric Eel 01.30.2010 02:06 PM

Sorry, been gone a few days and couldn't do the countdown. Five more days. In the mean time, I'm selling my 5T engine, check out the FS forum here.

Talked to Dan at Kershaw. He's going to offer 4mm mounting plates for the 2200 series Neu's. From what he described, it still doesn't sound like the best system. I'll wait for Mike's (5 days!). The mount he makes looks beefy as all get out.

Here is a picture of the Kershaw mount. Comments?

Fast5sRevo88 02.01.2010 06:19 PM

Wow, what a mount, that thing must be bulletproof with that ultra strong jackshaft and uber plastic spur gear. Got to be the best thing dor 5th scale since tires!

Overdriven 02.01.2010 07:09 PM

Well at least they put some plastic in there to attach to the chassis braces. I always get a kick out of their battery "stops", its a small screw not even half the height of the battery with what looks like rubber fuel line on it.

Electric Eel 02.01.2010 07:13 PM

It does look kind of flimsy. I can't imagine that thing holding up to a 2215 on 12S. It actually seems more suited for a 1/10th scale conversion. Oh well, just have to wait for Mike's system.

Electric Eel 02.04.2010 02:29 PM

Looks like Jason from MaxAmps just sent Mike some packs to test. Jason reports that Joe from Castle said this about the Kershaw kit:"Actually I talked to Joe at castle about that kit. Looks like they won't warranty any of their current motor line if used with this Conversion. Simply saying that not even the 1717 will hold up to it."

I guess Jason found a new place to get more noobs to buy their over priced stuff. In rcgroups, MA seems to be somewhat not active. Some folks stated the way overpriced stuff and Austin went in there to say the price increase wasn't a lot and got burned in the process. If someone knows how to set up a electric vehicle the 1717 would have no problem pushing a Baja.
