Most A spikes I've seen under hard braking was less then 3A.

Did anyone already mention the new Kontronik Jive HV/LV ESCs? They're basically improved Jazz's and the HV versions can handle up to 12S!

The spec sheet can be found here.
They did not rate it yet for burst current. The smaller one is rated for 60A cont and the bigger one for 80A cont. The product description in german states that whith proper cooling they are able to provide up to twice the amount of Amps continouus (120 or 160A). I guess burst current may be 20% higher off those doubled values. Theoretically those ESC should be able to push a 1:5 rc car (5.5 and 7KW continouus with 12s Lipo and 3.7V per cell). Judging from my eagletree records which show Amp peaks of up to 120A on the Jazz 55-10-32 i run (speced for 65A burst), i have no doubts about their statement that those continouus Amp values are minimum values (which can be doubled with proper cooling). 2 interesting features on the jive series ESC: they are waterproof and do have an integrated switching BEC up to 12s lipo. Small downside. Only forward with brakes (no car mode with reverse). |

Although the thread is a bit old, I've got excited about the Kontronik 55 controllers. I've got a MBX-5T truggy and I want to use 2x 4s 4900mah FP packs( 8s in total). I'll use my old 1950/10 motor. Gearing will be something like 17-20 pinion teeth over the standard spur size of the truggy( sorry, I don't know what's the size of the spur). Will the Kontronik be able to handle this setup? I might use additional cooling and so forth, but I need something to handle the truggy with some level of effeciency? |

As your motor will spin at almost 40000rpm with 8s you should start with smaller pinions as Lutach already suggested it: 12, 13 or 14.
With a 13 tooth pinion your cars top speed will be around 40mph. Differential Ratio: 4.6 Transmission Ratio: 1 Other Ratio: 1 Spur Tooth Count: 46 Pinion Tooth Count: 13 Total Voltage: 29.6 Motor KV: 1333 Tire Diameter (inches): 5.6 Tire Ballooning (inches): 0 Motor Current Draw: 0 Motor coil Ω: 0.017 Spur/Pinion Ratio: 3.54 : 1 Total Ratio: 16.27692 : 1 Tire Circumference (inches): 17.59 inches (446.86 mm) Total Motor Speed: 39456.8 RPM Vehicle Speed: 40.39 mph (64.87 km/h) Estimated Adjusted Speed: 38 mph (61 km/h) - 5% loss Effective KV Value: 1333 Here is a video with the shortest gearing (1:12,13) i used with the Jazz 55 (with 10s1p A123 around 30v and 30000rpm at full speed) and the corresponding eagletree graphs: whole run, 1 minute in detail, speed passes. There was no cogging but i sometimes noticed a very small delay (say 0.2sec) when starting from a stand still and hitting full throttle. I still use a small heatsink "glued" to the Jazz 55-10-32 cooling plate. With better cooling mods RC-helicopter flyers push this small ESC up to 4KW. |
