+ a additional question  but does the XL combo already come with some kind of connector for the batteries? if so wich kind of connector?
If not, wich kind of connector do you recommend to use or is this not so relevant?

Thx already

What size pinion is going to ship with the Baja conversion? I'm really wanting to get Mike's conversion kit and Castle's Esc/Motor combo, 8s, but unsure of what pinion to go with.

Thanks.

padrino 12.24.2010 12:25 PM

With some hopefully shipping yesterday does anyone have pics of the Mamba XL? Nothing like a few first hand shots to look at for those of us still waiting.

Here it is! Just got it this morning. Don't have time to put together my E-Baja today due to Holiday festivities, but I snapped some quick pictures on my cellphone for you guys.

Sorry for the bad quality, I'm in a rush and my cellphone doesn't take the best pictures. I'd take a picture next to a soda can but I didn't have anything, but it feels and looks almost as big as one. (very close in size I think)

WOW! thx for the pics man!! :)

just some questions....okay I am not a solder, never done it and dont think I am gonna do my first solder work with this expensive piece of equipment (+ I dont have the proper tools to solder)
But it seems you have to solder the bullet connectors onto the 3 ESC cables to connect the motor with the ESC?
How come they did not do that already since the motor cables are already equiped with bullet connectors?

And also, what is the size of the the bullet connectors between motor and the provided ones, are 8mm?

Last questions, what kind of connectors are you gonna use for your batteries - esc?
and what batteries?

thx! :)

Hi, yes you will need to solder the bullet connectors to the ESC but they are pretty easy to solder compared to other connections. Maybe Castle will have them connected in the future when they are sold as a combo? I ordered them separately I think.
The bullet connectors are 8mm in size.
I'm going to use deans, as I use them on all of my other vehicles and they haven't given me any problems yet in high amperage situations. I am also going to be using the latest Hyperion G3 EX 4200mah 45c/90c lipos on 8s.

Riko 12.24.2010 06:33 PM

hi!

well I have also done research on measurements of lipo-dimensions and if they would fit the battery case (I got the specs from rc mike arct1k) and I assume you will set up the lipo's in series.
Those would fit very well even in series.
Even the Hyperion VX 6500 mah would fit in series(but there is no EX equivalent of that much mah) although you would have to cut out the sides from the tray
So I assume it would fit without cutting with the Castle conversion since they dont include a battery tray.
I also assume you will get the RC Mike conversion kit with tray.

And a question about Deans, is that good enough as a connector or are there different kinds of deans connectors?

Hi, yeah I picked the 4200mah Hyperions because they are going to be used in my other cars as well and I like the smaller dimensions and lighter weight of them. If they were to be used only in the baja I would have gotten at least 5000mah+. I am also going to be using two 4s pack in series for 8s 4200mah total so you have that right :)
And I am going to be using Mike's conversion kit.
There are just 2 deans that I am aware of. The micro Deans and the regular Deans, I'll just be using regular and I think they will hold up just fine. If not, I will switch up to deans connectors.

toplakd 12.24.2010 06:50 PM

Wow, what a beast, and it fits perfectly into my baja5b conversion kit that I just have finished.

Awsome. Have to buy one of this motors and test it.

ow I see, nonetheless its great man!

let us know how the baja power works out with the those batteries and with the Castle kit :)

ps: did you make a mistake in your last sentence? :)

Haha yeah, I meant switch up to bullet connectors. Oops! And I'll let you know how it all runs soon! Most likely on Monday when I get my batteries, but it could be sooner on 6s. I'll keep you guys updated.

Riko 12.24.2010 07:10 PM

cool dude! I'm sure we all will be waiting for your findings! ;)

and could you also post some pics of the conversion kit with the combo in your baja + with the batteries?
I would like to get a visual how tight the batteries sit and how much room left there would be.

+ a vid would be cool of course as well :p

Yup of course! Once I have some free time this weekend to tinker on it I will start a build thread and psot up a bunch of pics  and then I'll try to work on a video but it depends on how the weather goes.

Riko 12.24.2010 07:36 PM

even better! ;)

Arct1k 12.24.2010 09:53 PM

FYI I posted up the conversion manual for the baja in the manual thread last weekend. :)

Hi Patrick, what are the Specs for the FETs in the current Hydra line? the specs above point to a possible future Hydra Ice 200A HV ESC only 50% bigger and more expensive than the possible future Hydra Ice 200A LV ESC,
whereas the current Hydra 240HV Looks like its twice the size and close to twice the price of the current Hydra 240LV, have HV FET improvements narrowed the size weight and cost difference between HV and LV ESCs?
Paul.

hmm, I read on a board that Deans wouldnt be sufficient enough, they can only handle max 60amps....so I assume deans connectors are not done with this system?

deans are rated at 60 amps for safe use. I swear by deans and will use them on my e5b. You will never sustain a 60 amp draw. Deans should be fine.

I have never ever ever seen a melted deans. If you melt a deans you are doing something seriously wrong.

I looked in the "every manual you ever need" sticky in the general section and couldn't find it.

Could you provide a link for the pc challenged?

Hi all, what about the BEC of Mamba XL ?

I've read its capable of 5 ampere, so I wonder whether I've to use the ESC without external BEC or not (initially I would use the ESC with 6s only on a 1717)

Bye, Andrea.

Riko 12.26.2010 01:38 PM

lol the 5 amps is for the bec that is already build into the esc...

Yes, I know and this is the same for the internal BEC of Mamba Monster, however, with the Monster, I do prefer to use en external BEC when I go with 6s.

My question was if I should do the same with the XL.

Bye, Andrea

Arct1k 12.26.2010 04:12 PM

The BEC seems as strong as the MMM - had no issues with RX dropping or Servo losing power

Can the MMM deliver 5A over the BEC? I thought for some reason the BEC in the XL could deliver more current then the BEC in the MMM but I may be off base.

andreazinno 12.28.2010 03:22 AM

Hi guys, do You know what's happened with Mamba XL sale ?

I mean, on Castle site there is now a direct link for 2038 motor, while the page for Mamba XL is not reachable from "products for driving" section (it can be find only through a search within Castle), besides on that page the option for "buy it" has been removed.

I realized that at least on user of the Forum has received the combo, so I'm a bit puzzled about the real status of the product.

Bye, Andrea.

well I think its just not the time for the official release....on the other sales pages from the link bellow they are also not in stock, but it seems you will have to be a bit more patient.
Or you can buy from Castle directly using their phoneservice like the one on this board did.

The initial run of XL ESCs was 250 (per Patrick) so I expect they are running low on stock and since it hasn't been officially released yet they are not allowing too many orders to stack up. I don't think the motors require assembly in the states but the ESCs do at least in part.

Does it means that the full initial stock will be available at Castle only ?

I'm asking this because almost all online store doesn't have the XL in stock (including big names like Tower)

Bye.

Did anyone else receive the combo? I was hoping for shipping this week but I never heard back, since Castle is closed for the rest of the week looks like it's January.

I didn't know that they were closed. Guess no other products will ship to us this week.

I called on my order earlier this week and was told my XL wouldn't ship till late next week :-( bummed.

Hi, unfortunately I have been swamped with work and just general life stuff. I had a chance to mock up some things but I need to either make or get Mike to make an adapter plate for the 2028 to fit as it is smaller than the Neu 2230 and doesn't have the same bolt spacing. My CNC mill is on the fritz so it may be a little while. I haven't really had over a few hours to myself for at least a week straight! :oh: I'll let you know when I get anything done.

Riko 01.03.2011 06:48 PM

cewl! :)

Arct1k 01.03.2011 07:02 PM

Mike has a 30mm to 45mm Adapater all made up... Its visible in the Baja Conversion manual...
