Oh ok. That body is light so the chassis must be heavy. I never weighed my 5b.

thzero 09.05.2010 03:56 PM

Well at 5mm it is pretty heavy. I was surpised that nutz' chassis weighted in at 18 lbs, I was expecting more along the lines of mine.

Yep thats what mine weighs with my light lipos... with my hyperion 6500mah lipos it weighs 14.2lbs... But i think i have added more weight to the truck recently.... I thought, with 9s i would need a little more weight for stability at speed....

I did remove the gearbox to save a lot of weight, but i did add GH Alloy Bulks which are a little heavy, and a 4mm alloy plate for my motor plate....

Once i am done, i will re weigh the truck

Can't wait for new ESC to come out. I'd like to run 8s or even 10s. Just have to get the appropriate motor.

Revamp

I ultimately decide to just use the DB-17 chassis due to time constant and the fact I didn't feel like messing with it.

The giant 22" wheelbase chassis is for sale now if anyones interested ??

Heres what I've done now;

Since I bought another 1717 I thought I squeeze my 1717 Heli version into my DB-17 chassis. Hope this well help you fellas wanting to do the same ?

The 1717 Heli version is needed unless you grind one side of the can flat ?

Use a dremel deburing bit to hog out the 3mm slots on a FLM or RCM Revo 3.3 Nitro conversion mount.

This is the gimmick I used and it made short work of the aluminum, a small round file will work but you'll be there a while.

1717 installed

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240014.jpg

I then cut a piece of 2" X 3" X 3/16" flat stock and drilled and tapped holes (4mm)for it to be mounted where the original Flux mount went on the motor plate.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240015.jpg

I then eyeballed where I wanted the mount to be on the tapped plate for optimum gear choice (I can easily use a 10T pinion up to at least a 18T with the way I've done this) I counter sunk the holes that the hardware attaches the FLM/RCM mount to the plate.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240017.jpg

Then once all together I placed the assembly on the Flux motor mount plate and eyeballed where I needed to trim the chassis to allow the FatBoy 1717. I didn't have to remove much, it took a little bit because I had to cut a little reinstall, cut a little etc etc. After I filed the cut edges I ran over the shiney alum w/a black sharpie.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240019.jpg

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240020.jpg

The draw back to stuffing this pig in here is I have to relocate the servo from the original FLM servo plate and reinstall on the side of the chassis rail but I'm not comlaining.

HA, I'm doing what you just did. DB17 with a 1717. I won't be using that motor mount and I did not buy the heli version.

I will be building/making my a motor mount out of some 1/4" stainless steel square tube I found at my job. Just have to cut it down to size, drill out the motor mount side, and tap the bottom for the stock mounting screws.

The piece I'm cutting out of is around 4" x 6" x 36". I'll be cutting a small L out of it.

This is what the metal I will be using looks like (similar).

Not sure what your gonna make(design) but what I did took under 1 hour. Fast and simple mod.

Be curious to see what you make.

Skip this post. Check further down for my cardboard mock up.

what batteries are you planning on running with this set up? what gearing did you set it up with? very cool project i like the looks of beefy. :) cant wait to see some video as well, if thats in the plans.

Bmr4life 09.25.2010 06:17 PM

I won't be getting started on it until my motor shows up so I make everything as right as I can the first time.

There are a few other detail that are hard to explain and draw in 2D.

Here's a mock up in cardboard. :)

The bottom part will be cut to fit the mounting holes.

This is a spare 2200kv in this mock up.

I have the same questions. :)

My idea is to run 6s with a 25T pinion and stock spur. Should still hit 60+mph with this setup.

My current DB17 is running stock motor, spur and pinion with non-bp diffs and high speed idler. This setup hits 50mph on 4s (53mph via gps, no crash). If my math is correct, it should be possible for me to hit 67mph on 6s with the 1580kv motor. Seems high to me, but the math works out.

Motor RPM drops down ~28%. I increase the pinion by 25% and up the voltage by 50%.

Am I making it to simple? I know wind, friction, and weight make a difference, but not enough to stop me from hitting 60mph.

Bondonutz 09.25.2010 07:31 PM

As of now I'm running 6s and geared for 43mph, top speed just doesn't intrest me with something of this format. After all, It's a Monster Truck, It's supposed to jump, climb etc.

I soon expect the XL-HV and will be running 8s, I think 10s will be a bit overboard with 1500kv.

FYI, aint no way that cardboard will hold ! JK, I know it's mocked.
