Hi I have a backorder in for the MedUsa 36 60 1600 v2, I currently run a 9XL.

Should I be waiting for the 70MM motor? I am OK with the power of the 9XL but I am not happy with the heat. Looking for a more efficient motor.

The 60mm should do fine for you. My 50mm runs cooler then the XL's I've heard of geared for about the same speed in a Maxx. Since I upgraded to the Neu 1512-2.5D I also went to 6s A123's and this truck is awesome now, the Neu does tend to run a bit warmer then the Medusa did though.

Your really going to like the Medusa:wink:

TexasSP 06.11.2008 02:59 PM

I ran my 1500 60mm today 6s geared 20/68 and am getting really hot on the motor and controller after just a few minutes.. Is this too much? According to the speed calculator it's only 37 mph. I am using an mgm 16018.

Buzzsaw46 06.11.2008 03:24 PM

Can you define really hot?

My truck was radared at 42mph but geared for 33mph FWIW. So with gearing for 37mph(about the same as my current setup) I expect it's doing into the mid to upper 40's. A quick calc say's I should be close to 47mph with my setup, and I would say it feels close to that. My motor is getting up to mid 140's which does feel quite hot to the touch, but perfectly acceptable.

TexasSP 06.11.2008 03:27 PM

I need to get a infrared thermometer but right now it gets too hot to touch even for a second.

It's relative to the amount of pain you can take but 140F for me is too hot even for a second. You really need a thermometer to tell for sure.

lutach 06.11.2008 03:57 PM

A little spit always help to determine temps . If your spit (a drop of water will do too ) boils on the motor then you know the temps are at 212 degrees F or above.

TexasSP 06.11.2008 05:40 PM

True, I just don't like spitting on my truck. :na:

BlackedOutREVO 06.11.2008 11:22 PM

So when for sure is the 70MM can Medusa coming out? Have a Truggy that needs a power house

And I didnt see a price in here, any idea on price?

Thanks

highflier 06.12.2008 07:05 AM

212 is to hot. I would say for the motor you want to keep it below 160.

It was 90 out yesterday and I tested a stadium truck out in some uncut grass the ESC was 150 and the motor was 140 after about 5-7 min. I am worried about the ESC I will try again after I cut grass to see what temp is then.

Concerning to hot to the touch. At 140 I could touch for about 1 second. It was not comfortable at all. In hot weather like we are having now I think I would be happy to see 150 on motor after a full battery. I know my 9XL will not last a full pack before it gets to that temp. Hoping the Medusa will do better.

I have the 36 60 1600 V2 on my order. Seems like alot of people went with the 1500, why?

Highflier

In case you are confused 9xl uis in e-maxx

Buzzsaw46 06.12.2008 07:24 AM

I think there were some 1500s in stock at a few places, The specs on the 1600 do look better.

I just put my 50-3300 into the 1/10 HPI truggy. It's been raining all night so I know the yard is way too wet for any running this morning, I hope to get some runs on it this afternoon though.

sleebus.jones 06.12.2008 10:10 AM

160 wouldn't bother me at all. 180 - 190 would.

spaz163 06.12.2008 10:31 AM

Well I'm now also a member on the backorder list for the 36-60-2000. :yipi: Looking to get a more efficient motor than the 8xl I am currently running on 14 cells (nimh) in my 1/8 buggy.

Will be taking the step to lipo within the next year or so, haven't decided between 4s or 5s but it looks like the 2000 would work for either. Just have to gear appropriately.

bustitup 06.12.2008 05:12 PM

got my 36-60-2000 v2 afterbuner today from Impakt..took three days for delivery ...looks and feels real solid...just waiting on cc bec, ....looking for 5mm 32p pinions

Wow, I must have just missed buying it from them. Went and ordered it direct from Medusa but its going to take 3 weeks.

Does the motor come with a flat spot on the shaft?

TexasSP 06.12.2008 06:34 PM

I ran my setup again today after getting a thermometer. Temps were 125-135 esc, 100-105 batteries and 165-175 motor. Ambient temps are 95-98. The thing is I am geared 20/68 now, but yesterday when I was 22/68 the esc shut down. So I don't think gearing the pinion higher is the answer and I don't have anything smaller in pinions right now. The testing was done mostly in thin grass (only slightly thicker than say a golf course). I got to run for about 5-8 minutes until an unforeseen object caught the maxx and busted the rear shock tower. It was still drivable though dragging its butt on the ground.

Do you have air holes in your body? Those temps aren't terrible for the kind of heat your running in, a little air flow might be enough if you dont have some already.

TexasSP 06.14.2008 11:36 AM

Body off for the testing. I will probably do a new body and cut vent holes in it as the traxxas bodies are too flimsy to cut into. I was doing some more testing and the controller had to be really stressed to get over 130 so I think I am good there.

The version 2 did not come with any flat spot. I have to grind it on mine but I ended up returning it in favor of the 36-60-2000Kv motor. I'm hoping to receive it next week.

Does the 60 2000kv V2 come with a flat spot??

Can someone explain the 920W, 87A, 105A, and 30V values as far as how they relate to each other for this:

MR-036-060-2000V2-5 2000RPM/V 1.70A 0.006 920W 87A 105A 30V 36 x 60mm

Is 920W the watts that can be produced sustained or peak? Would a peak for this motor be 105A x 30V = 3150W??

Assuming a 14.8V setup that is rated at 120C continous, how do I determine the possible amp draw on the batteries, or, is it limited to a max 105A?

Trying to decide on some batteries here but not sure if my max amps rating that would be pulled is 105A by the motor, or thisL

3150W / 14.8V = 212Amp peak? (got a chart here that breaks it down this why by different voltages)

suicideneil 06.15.2008 08:25 AM

Watts = volts x amps.

920watts would most likely be maximum continuous output.
87A the max continuous rating.
105A the max peak rating for 30 seconds or so.
30V the max rated input voltage.
1.70A is probably the idle current.

In theory, the max current draw you will see is around that 87A area, but peaks will be higher, up around 120-130A usually, depending on vehicle weight, gearing, kv rating of the motor etc etc.

920W / 14.8V = 62A continuous, but as a general rule anything that can provide 80amps or more is fine; the higher the capacity & C rating, the better ideally.

I have just finshed my latest conversion. HB Lightning 2 Pro Evo, MMM, 6S1P A123, 14/46 and Medusa 36-60-1600.

That motor is absolutely amazing! I have recorded 1807W peak :surprised:
http://picasaweb.google.pl/Maciej.St...79480907914834

Ambient temp around 65F, motor after 10 min run 115F :yipi:

Now I need 36-70 for my truggy and 36-50-3300 for B44 :)

killermmn 09.28.2008 06:10 PM

Nice!!!

I've been wondering about these motors for awhile.

If you wanna see even more bump, you should try it on 6S Lipo. Something in the 20C-30C. Fit in as many mah as your battery tray can hold.

This is the setup I wanna try in an E Revo or an E maxx.

Same motor as yours
Mamba Monster V3
6S 20C 5000mah Lipo (Should be good for 100amps continous)

What Mod 1 Gearing would be best to run in a heavier truck like this?

What top speed should we gear for? I've seen anything much over 50mph in a Monster Truck is just asking for huge tumbles. LOL

Nice Watts you're putting out there. Thanks for the Graph. Nice Info!

Maciolus 09.29.2008 12:44 AM

I will probably try 6S 5000mAh Zippy. I think power peaks will be above 2kW :D

That will be perfect combination for Revo or Maxx.

Try to calculate optimal gearing with Parameter Solver:

This is very useful tool.

Unsullied_Spy 09.29.2008 12:57 AM

Do you need to cover up the holes in the motor? I've got a RC-M heatsink clamp with a trimmed washer on mine but haven't run it yet.

tom255 09.29.2008 01:35 AM

I am pretty satisfied with medusa 60mm and 2000kV motor. It works on my truggy very well! Exact power for racing dont need more! For speedruns and bashing maybe not enough. I use fan additionaly and temps never go over 60c~140f
Mine had same issue like on feigaos, rear endbell on hard racing came off. So drilled 2 holes from each side and screwd 2-2mm bolts there like on NEU's.
BTW 60mm can dont have any flat spot
One cons more: When i run motor in my hands i feel that rotor is not balanced well, on some speeds it resonate and i think it can affect on bearings some time. So quality is not the best. But for sure one of the best choise after feigao

I use lathed Mike's front NEU cover to protect front of the motor and insulating tape on the rear.

BrianG 09.29.2008 11:56 AM

Anyone have temps from running stock, and then again after the holes are covered up? I'd imagine there would be some rise in temps covering them. Instead of using tape on the rear, how about some metal screen instead? Would keep the larger stuff out yet allow air to circulate. Of course, some dust would get in there, but it's the big stuff that's a problem...

Subject: 70mm Medusa motors

Hi there. Just curious if there was any news on the up-coming 70mm V2 medusa motors. Last I heard they were due late september, but Im guessing the sudden popularity of the 60mm versions amongst r/c truck owners has pushed back the eta somewhat. Any info is greatfully received.

Yours sincerely, Neil Ward.

Neil,

No, just other delays in getting parts for the prototypes and then testing pushed it back some.

We’ve tested our prototypes and all is well. Production is now gearing up and we expect to have some late October.

Shortly all the motor info will be added to our web pages with pre-orders being accepted.

That is some good news! Cant wait to see what KV's they will have.

lutach 10.02.2008 03:16 PM

First prototypes will be 1600Kv.

suicideneil 10.02.2008 03:30 PM

Bit low for me, I'll hold out for something in 1800-1900kv flavour. Im curious though, all other things being equal, how much more 'power' (torque I guess) would a 4 pole motor generate compared to a 2 pole? Maybe I could just gear up a slower motor, but then I'd worry about my batts maybe.. gah.

JaySki 10.02.2008 03:30 PM

I just soldered up some wires for the Medusa 36-60-2000...
I have it geared at 20/58 in an e-revo and with 4S looks like it'll be around 35-37ish.

What gearing would be a good start for 6S? Speeds show mid 50s with RPM around 45K.

I'd like to use the 2X3S packs I have.. but I don't care to blow another MMM as I did with the NEU 1515 1.5D.

The 4 pole will basically in theory make 2 time the torque and you can gear up the lower Kv with 4S lipos.

Depends what speed you are looking for with the 6s setup. I'd say aim for 40-45 as a nice speed, the calculator will tell you the required gearing. I doubt the MMM will blow due to using 6s with that particular motor, vs the neu which is alot more amp hungry by comparison.

As for 2pole vs 4pole torque, thats kinda what I figured, just seems a little too straight forward for my cynical mind.

I'm betting with the MMM it will be a little faster.Mine ran 44 with my Quark 80 with 68/24 gears(40 with a MM) 20/58 is just a little lower,in my Emaxx with a MM 20/58 it runs 39.But thats with dirt bonz that don't expand much.So don't be surprised if that gearing gets mid 40's. On 6s I hit 55.7 with 24/68 gears.
