I remember hearing they intend to double the MM with the MMM, so I'm expecting 6s waranteed and possibly 10s capable, for those who want to push it. I also heard 200 amps being tossed around, so it will be tough to smoke

Yes... that's basicly the idea... it's two MM boards in one unit, double the amp rating/half the IR.
I hope they stick to the HV theme. Shawn used to say he wanted to run 8s... and even higher in the future. From what I heard last summer, 6s sounded like a slam dunk, and I think the goal is higher. |
Would 2 boards increase the voltage capacity though?

I'm not EE but teh voltage is determined by the individual component specs, not the # of fets... the double stacking the MM board IMO is referring to the fets... which would only double the current capacity specs.

And I think the choices.... variety of components availble... is much less when you go HV. But it would be worth paying an extra $20 or whatever it would be if it can do an honest 8s or so. |
I don't mind them stacking the boards IF they provide a heatsink between layers. Seems pointless to only cool the top layer. Sure, the heat will work it's way from the bottom to the top layer, but that's not a good design IMO. The Warriors are like this; they just stack the PCBs and heatsink the top layer. Quark does too, but at least they have a heat spreader...
Personally, I wouldn't mind them using TO-220 style cases (tabbed style) FETs. The case would be bigger, but mounting them on a heatsink would be MUCH easier and those FETs cool better since there is a metal tab connected to the sink rather than the plastic case. Not only does increasing the number of parallel FETs increase the current capacity, it also decreases the total resistance, which decreases the voltage drop, therefore less heat. |
Last summer, CC said things like... double stack the MM... double the specs... and it did sound like that's exactly what they intended to do.
But they may only have used this language to convey the idea... or maybe as a prototype. I have no idea what the production units will be like. |
Well, it looks like they designed the HV-110 correctly by putting part of the sink between layers. Makes for a larger case to be sure, but it's done "right". I hope they borrow from that design...

@ bomb-proof; No, if you use two boards it wouldn't increase the voltage it can handle, it will only increase the current.
The voltage is (also) limitid by the specifications of the FETT's that are used. Some other parts need to be changed to work on a higher voltage too. |
