Need Help with 1717 Wires

Well I decided to take off 1.5" of wire off my Neu/Castle 1717 motor and now I can't get the wires to tin at all. Is there any way to get the wires to tin?

Very Sorry to hear.

I found myself in this position once and I had to use a Butane micro torch to burn off the "varnish" and then scrape the wire clean.

Hope you can remedy your situation however you do it ?

Can you show a picture of that?

What type of solder are you using and how many watts is your iron?

The wires on those are supposed to be ok to shorten.

This leads me to believe the varnish covered wires should be up inside the motor.

Unless you have an air version (which I do) - It feels like on mine they are extended windings

Yep mine is the AIR version and the wires must be coated. I am doing some research now and some guys have had great luck Heating the Wire on a aspirin. I guess the acid in the aspirin melts off the coating on the wires.

Uh Oh.

Yep, the varnish MUST come off before any solder will stick.

Are we dealing with a few larger strands or many smaller strands?

Picture?

Pic coming, WHAT A PAIN!

Ouch I feel your pain - I;d try the burn off method - I've done it once before but with much smaller wires....

If you go for it keep a damp sponge on insulation further back as you dont want all that heat going into windings...

Raydee 05.18.2010 09:28 PM

Well I took the wire that I cut off and tried three different methods of getting the coating off the wire and decided that I need to either send the motor in and have the pro's do it or find a better way.

I doubt castle can do to repair this - They are all made offshore... I'm guessing its a write off...

But thanks now I'm sure I won't be shortening my wires!!!

muriatic acid?

What three methods did you use?

The varnish is some really high temp stuff, so it takes alot to burn it. As mentioned, a small butane torch or even a larger propane torch would do the job.

Keeping the heat out of/off the motor is a precaution you must take.

One thing that might aid this, is to strip more of the insulation off, so the damp cloth makes better contact with the wire. The "insulation" is just heat shrink.

Burning this is going to leave a crusty mess, which also has to be cleaned up. I would suggest a fine bristle brass brush for this job. Brush the crap out of the ends after burning, and clean them up as best you can. The cleaner the better.

If it doesn't come clean the first time, repeat step one with the torch, then brush again. Rinse, lather, repeat............until the varnish is gone and they are clean.

A good, clean, solid 1/8" at the end of the leads will work.

Dab some soldering flux paste on the wire ends before you begin soldering. It will help the solder flow better.

Once you get a good "tinning" on the lead end, apply heat shrink to the extra exposed lead.

I have rewound a few outrunner motors and always found this part of the process to be a challenge.

It can be done though. You just have to be careful and neat with your work.

Best of Luck.

I bet Steve Neu could do it though. I have no idea is Muratic acid will work or hurt the motor.
