dual brushless motors

just had a question. if i use 2 brushless motors do i need 2 esc's or can the motors be wired together to go to one esc.

thanks

Arct1k 02.13.2008 07:09 AM

two esc's...

nl12 02.13.2008 11:20 AM

Unless...

steveo 02.13.2008 11:27 AM

depends on how big the motors are and what esc you are using , you could use up to 700 size motors on a evx esc.

sleebus.jones 02.13.2008 11:32 AM

Why not just size the system properly for one motor and be done?

jhautz 02.13.2008 11:58 AM

you could use one, but the motors would need to be identical and timed to each other. Not that easy to do, but its been done.

I agree. one properly sized motor is more efficient and just as powerfull.

suicideneil 02.13.2008 12:32 PM

But two gets you 'cool' style points...

:P :D

drkros3 02.13.2008 01:03 PM

reason for 2 motors is cause im going to start building a truck and im going to enter the worlds fastest rc car challenge.

ok and thanks you guys answered my question.

suicideneil 02.13.2008 01:11 PM

Well, that does change things though, since you are building a truck for a speed record. To find a single motor as powerful as a couple feigao XLs, you'd want something like a massive Neu or lehner costing 10 times as much, and esc costing.... I wouldnt like to guess. JohnnyMaxxima has a Gorillamaxx based truck with twin 7XLs running on 5s each- and Bk9920s I think it was-that should be a good point of reference for you.

Arct1k 02.13.2008 01:33 PM

steveo - evx is not a brushless controller it is a brushed controller...

Jef - I guess you could ensure that the rotor was at exactly the same point... I suspect it would be difficult to achieve with variation between motors etc

MetalMan 02.13.2008 01:44 PM

Dual BL will not have that much of a gain over single BL, considering the extra weight involved. With dual BL, you pretty much need twice the batteries as a single motor.

My Savage will be entering the competition, with a single KB45 10XL (1200 kv) running on 10s2p A123, with a CC Phoenix-HV110. It's geared 20/46 with a center diff (no tranny), for a theoretical top speed of about 65mph. I haven't reached top speed yet because the suspension is too soft and the oil in the center diff isn't thick enough.

drkros3 02.13.2008 08:12 PM

ok now would a xl motor push our more power then a L motor?

MetalMan 02.13.2008 09:29 PM

For continuous usage, yes. At the same power level, a shorter motor will generate more heat.

drkros3 02.13.2008 10:12 PM

so if im only using it for a little bit of time could i use a L motor.

zeropointbug 02.14.2008 02:30 AM

i would stick to one larger motor

what are you running this in?

a large Neu motor should work wonders for speed records

drkros3 02.14.2008 03:00 AM

going to be going into a emaxx.

drkros3 02.14.2008 03:21 AM

just wondering you think putting 8 cells to a 6xl motor would be to much lol.

jzemaxx 02.14.2008 12:14 PM

I'm finishing my 3905 now with Twin Nemesis Blue 6XL's and 5S lipo's on it. I will let you know how it turns out....

drkros3 02.14.2008 01:44 PM

ok cool. im thinking about just dong 2 6xls, 2 4 cell lipos, 2 mamba max esc

suicideneil 02.14.2008 06:07 PM

I would concider something with a higher amp handling capability- a forwards/brake only boat or plane esc would be cheaper, and some have rather good specs such as 200amps and 6s etc. Then again, if a bk9920 can do 5s with a 7xl, you might be fine.

jzemaxx 02.14.2008 06:38 PM

The BK9920 will do 6S and with a Fan it should be fine on 5S...

Sweet Jesus.... that thing will be stupid-ugly powerful/fast. BE prepared to be constantly buying replacement parts.

Just imagine a top fuel dragster, and then imagine that... times 10.

zeropointbug 02.14.2008 11:31 PM

I would actually consider putting two 8xl's in that, you will get the same topspeed (can pull higher gearing), and it will tame the beast on the acceleration aspect.... well, somewhat.

drkros3 02.15.2008 12:45 AM

i kinda want to just run one motor (7xl or 6xl) the hv-110 esc by castle creations, and 8 cell lipos lol
