That spur gear didn't last long...
A couple of weeks ago I stripped the RRP spur gear that I have been using in my 9L brushless E-Maxx for a while now. As it's almost impossible to get aftermarket E-Maxx spur gears over here in the UK, I decided to try a stock one.
I bought the Traxxas slipper rings, pegs, and a couple of 66T spurs. I fitted one, set the mesh, and cranked the slipper down tight. The spur had a bit of 'wobble' in the rotation, but the RRP one didn't sit true either, so I wasn't too concerned. I fitted the stock gear cover as well to try and reduce the chance of a small rock getting caught. I took the truck out for a run, and it was going great for 2 minutes. Then the truck slowed, and started making a grinding noise. I brought the truck over, took the body off, and saw lots of small pieces of black plastic on the chassis around the tranny. There was the smell of melted plastic, and even a bit of smoke coming out of the spare motor plate opening! Needless to say, the stock spur had smoked itself. I was just surprised at the amount of damage that had been caused in such a short amount of time, even with it fully tightened! :L: Once the Ofna nylon 51 tooth spur gears are in stock, I will order a Strobe kit. I'm running 15/66 at the moment, so 12/51 should be OK. I also bought a Revo a couple of weeks ago, and the tuning 'issues' I am already experiencing with it will keep me occupied until then... http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1721/spur0if.th.jpg |
Hey Toon, i don't suppose your'e in the North East are you with a name like Toon?
|
It is a Dutch name..
|
Oh right,interesting.
|
I'm not Dutch, I know that much... :L:
Gustav was close though, my name is derived from the football (soccer) team I support. I am not from the NE of England, but the team is based there. :D |
Well trust me.. Toon is a dutch name too..
|
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much! :L:
I'm 1/2 Dutch, just so y'all know. |
You won't look back with the Strobe slipper Toon.
Ive had one for months now, with little or no wear on the spur at all. don't forget the Sprong either ;) |
that Sprong won't work on a gmaxx chassis..
Big salute Dabid... ;) |
Would the sprong work if he just used an e-maxx motor plate?
Serum, I sure would like to see a pic of the underside of your Savage. Is it a whole plate with the sides bent up or are they just plastic buggy thingemyjigs? Is there a pic on line somewhere i could check out? Also, i've still got the BigMaxx and shulze.I was wondering whether to just e-bay the controller and try the motor with the 160amp MGM on 16 cells. Did you think the motor itself was any good or should i just sell them both? |
|
What exactly is the 'sprong', and what does it do?
|
The sprong replaces the stock spring. It also when tightend helps to keep the sur from woobeling.

It replaces the waffty spring on the slipper.
It stops wonky spur syndrome and gives somewhat better control of the slipper. you will have to moddify the gear cover if you use it. :) |
Cool.......3 people all bashing away the same answer at the same time:L:
|
3 at once! Now this is fast response!
|
Well... The sprong is a wonderfull little device, that replaces the stock spring, which makes the slipper perfectly adjustable and wobble free..
(a fourth same answer would'nt hurt?) |
Now that's what I call fast replies! :L:
I will definately get the sprong as well then, the stock spring setup is poor at best. I don't normally run the gear cover, so no problem there. I've just got to wait for all the necessary Strobe parts to be in stock now then. :D |
I've been looking into the Strobe slipper a little more, and found that some people (Mike included) say that they have run a 9L motor with the stock spur (12 pegs and fully tightened), and not had any real problems with it. I will get the Strobe slipper eventually, but thought I would try the stock setup again as I have a spare spur.
As the first one burned up so quickly, maybe I had the mesh too tight/loose, or the slipper nut wasn't as tight as it could have been? I am also thinking that I may be geared wrongly, after reading some posts about gearing brushless setups on this forum. It is currently geared 16/66, which due to lower gearing of the UE diffs, would be 13-14/66 with stock diffs. The last time I got a full run out of the truck, and took a temp. reading, I think the motor was around 170*F, which is in the upper range of safe temps. My instincts would tell me to gear down more, but I think gearing up might be worth a try, as brushless is different to conventional thinking... :W: P.S. If it makes any difference to gearing suggestions, the truck is just under 12 lb's RTR on stock Revo wheels/tires, but I have now also got a Hurricane/Response set, which knock a full 10oz. off that weight. :D http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/2975/179tu.th.jpg http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/6017/180qr.th.jpg http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/4565/199kz.th.jpg http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/6564/204xg.th.jpg |
Hey Toon,how's it going.
If, you've got a spur you may aswell use it.The problem you had looks like the slipper overheating. The strobe can actually be run as a slipper without over heating. With regard to gearing it does sound like you may need to gear up a little rather than down. Maybe this is of some helphttp://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...=&threadid=884 Let us know how you like those tyres.i'm thinking about maybe trying the XTM XLB wheels and tyres. Oh yeah, did you hear about the offer we've put in for Michael Owen.Record offer for the club so it must be over £15 million. |

If you go w/ the XLB's you'll need the 17mm adapters. |
Thanks for the info C.H.U.D,
I'll probably get komodos then or i might try crimefighters. |
