Worlds Fastest RC Car Challenge take 2.

Hey guys,
Its that time of year again. going to start to get my truck ready for the event coming up in July. I have already started putting it back together again after crashing it in to the wall last year. New X braces and carbon fiber servo plate went back on last night (courtesy of George from Gorilla. Thanks!).

My question is, looking to get rid of the 2 speed tranny that I have in there now. For top speed purposes, am I better off going to the single speed tranny kit or the Slipperential?
Thanks

BP-Revo 02.29.2008 04:00 AM

Well, the Slipperential would definitely help keep your front end down. This means you will run 4wd. If I recall, the new rules still do not require 4wd... I think in the end ir would be better to have a solid center axle driving only the rear wheels (or even both wheels) as it will ensure that the motor power is not wasted.

For top speed purposes, I would say a center driveshaft with a slipper would be the best. The slipper would protect the drivetrain, but there will be no gear reduction and less rotating mass with just the solid center driveshaft. If you don't understand what I mean here, I basically mean a slipperential without the differential.

John, I will be going this year as well, though I hope to enter a truck this year. I am going to start working again to build up funds.

I believe MetalMan will be entering as well...maybe we can make up team RC-Monster?

With a huge amount of power the center diff will not stop wheelies. I do think a center differential is the way to go. The center diff will weigh less and have less rolling resistance than a transmission. Also you can have some crazy high gearing with a center differential.
If you will be using 2wd or worried about power loss just get a spool for the center diff. Ofna makes one for there center differential.
My trucks were always faster with a center differential. Not sure why, could have been the less rolling resistance or the higher gearing.

If 2wd is allowed, you could pin the front output so the rear is the only one running. It could be like a free overdrive, though i wouldn't expect the diff to survive, the constant running

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 03.01.2008 12:25 AM

I guess I wouldn't really need the slipperential then? More of a center diff is what I would be looking for? Looking for more of a direct drive if you will since I have my slipper tightened all the way now anyway.
So if a center diff is the way to go, any recommendations (link?) to what I should get? Easy to install?
Thanks

Patrick 03.01.2008 02:27 AM

Will you still be using dual motors? That could make it a bit harder to use a center diff.

MetalMan 03.01.2008 02:40 AM

Cool, my Savage already has a center diff . There will be another real MT contender this year, I just need to start getting it ready

John, perhaps we can work together to figure out a center diff solution for your truck, if Mike won't be releasing anything soon? Making the parts would be easy for me, but designing it will take time (to ensure proper fitment).

Promod 03.01.2008 10:33 AM

Just take a 1/8th onroad car and put larger tires, a truck body and call it done!!!
I would think someone would try putting larger tires on a rustler. If they run 70 mph out of the box.
Where are they having the fast RC challange this year?

I believe its still at the Autoclub Drag Strip at California Speedway in Fontana.

I think this is the result of the pancakes that are created in the front vs the smaller wheels in the rear (without a centerdiff) becase the tires are rather soft, the front wheels are bigger than the rear wheels when driving fast/accelerating. this results in more stress in the drivetrain, since the wheels need to spin at the same speed. (they are mechanically connected) the centerdiff cures this problem.

Have the rules been set for this years wfrcc? Thinking about attending.

suicideneil 03.02.2008 05:25 PM

They have- there is a link somewhere around here....

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 03.02.2008 06:19 PM

I will check with Mike and see if he has anything in the works. If not probably just go with the single speed tranny for now.
Thanks.

triggeraa 03.02.2008 08:20 PM

Thanks Neil.

captain harlock 03.03.2008 03:30 PM

Jhonny, Dafni should be of great help if you need someone to make you a centerdiff. I did not ask him to make me one, so I can't tell if he would do it. I have great expectations in him, though. :)

im wondering how you guys boost your receiver signal for these contest?

My range was horrible last year. I couldn't get more than 100yards without it glitching. Mike says it was the HiTec servo that I was using. Changed it out for this year so we will see what happens. I know I could have gotten a few more mph if I could have gotten more range.

Oh nice! keep us informed, I would love to get more range out of my 3PK... wonder if lipo batts would help?

I'm thinking of heading out to the competition this year also.... Would using two receivers help?.... could spektrum bind two receivers to one transmitter?...

You can bind more than 2 recievers to one transmitter. I was hoping to get some time alone to work on my vehicles, but I guess I won't make it again. One day I'll be there.

aqwut 03.05.2008 08:59 PM

I would love to go to the competition, but how the heck am I gonna get all my gear there?.. Anyone lives near that area, that wouldn't mind me shipping my gear there?....

I might ship it with Purolator...

MetalMan 03.05.2008 09:05 PM

There are a number of us who live near the competition, and who will be attending. Since it seems like there are going to be a bunch of RC-Monster members who will be attending, perhaps this would be a good opportunity to also have a RC-Monster bash?

Ship it in a secured box with some kind of lock to a hotel you are going to stay. Time it right so when you are at the hotel you will get your goodies or if you are not there yet, but have a reservation, ask them to hold it for you. Most events makes arrangements with near by hotels. This is how it was in Brasil when I used to go Kart racing.

BP-Revo 03.06.2008 03:30 AM

The hotel idea works, but I would ship it to someone's house. Less chance for loss if you ask me.

MetalMan and I live about an hour away from Cal Speedway (about 5 minutes or so from one another).

Johnny lives close as well.

I think a Spektrum would be the best bet, as I've never had a range limit on mine unless I was running a shortened antenna (ripped off in crash). I only think on receiver would be necessary, however. I would just mount if far away from everything as possible, and get the antenna nice and high.

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 03.06.2008 04:41 AM

18.27 miles and about 20 minutes away to be exact.
Let me know if you go. I'd be happy to let you ship it to my house.

Thanks dude, I'll have to take you up on this offer.... I will let you know when I find out that I'm 100% certain that I will be going...

What kind of secret weapon are you working on aqwut? I hope all those lipos aren't sitting there catching dust. May we have a little picture(s). Please .

MetalMan 03.06.2008 08:19 PM

If JOHNNYMAXXIMA doesn't have enough room to fit all of your equipment, I too can accept some . This offer is extended to other forum members as well, so long as you don't send me a bomb :gasp:

aqwut 03.06.2008 08:42 PM

Lutach... I'm hoping to get a few of those 40.300WK, and LMT 3080s...
hoping to bring 1/5 and GST 7.7 there.. but with different mods... I haven't worked on the drivetrain yet... I'll be working hard next week.. I've bee sick for almost a month now... just starting to come out of it... I think the excitement of going to Cali, made me feel better.. it was either upgrade the computer, or setup and go to the speed challenge... I chose speed challenge this year... I don't want to post anything up yet.. hehee.. I don't even know if it will work....

That's cool. If my daughter goes to Florida for the summer, I might be there as well, but might not run anything. I'm waiting for a F1 vehicle, but I think it's not coming. If I had it here, I was going to work on a chassis to fit the 2 10S A123 packs I have and run 72V with the SHV controller that is coming out. Plus I haven't had much time to work on some of my vehicles.

snellemin 03.06.2008 11:12 PM

2 10 A123 packs?!! Sjesus man, are you running it in a minicooper?

I had it in my truggy, but 2P though. If I had a 80V or 100V controller I would run 72V for sure.

Speed Challenge... best place to fly to would be Ontario international Airport?...

aqwut, you haven't posted your :lol:volts:lol: vote yet? Please look at: Please vote for one!!!

aqwut 03.15.2008 02:52 PM

I'm goin' into the competition with an estimated 11100 Watts continuous power.... Do you guys think that would be enough for the RWD 1/5th scale?... i should weigh less than 25Lbs with all electronics, motors and batteries....

No. More is better . That is awesome. You will make that beast fly for sure. Put like this, if a 5HP Max gas engined 1/5 scale went 85MPH, you should happily be well over 100MPH for sure.

aqwut 03.15.2008 03:44 PM

Jmaxximum... went in with 2700 watts last year and had 71MPH... I would like to atleast break 80MPH... When I finish I will test it at the local airport...doesn't get used much... which would be more accurate?... speed gun or GPS?..

triggeraa 03.15.2008 04:13 PM

GPS is more accurate. With speed gun you pretty much have to be directly inline with the oncoming rocket to get accurate speed..

I've heard GPS takes a while to get the reading, but it's accurate. Radar gun can be mounted like some folks do or you can have a friend you don't like so much stay infront of the R/C beast.

aqwut 03.15.2008 08:51 PM

I have a friend that has a radar gun...... I'll use both... does the GPS take more than 1 second to take the reading?...
