1st Time Dye
 

Dyed a set of BIG wheels for the first time. They turned out pretty well I guess. :whistle: I'm going to dye a set of chrome wheels next. Wish me luck. :mdr:

The paintjob was only my second attempt at painting lexan. I literally had it purchased, prep'd, painted, and peppered with decals in under 24hrs. It was to be my bash body.

Don't count on the dye sticking to the chrome very well from my past experience. Sometimes it works and tints the chrome. Looks nice if you can get it to work.

Well the wheels are brand new and I will clean them very well with plastic prep before they go into the dye.

I imagine that they would/could flake just like chrome wheels do later down the road.

Even managed to scare up a bnib discontinued ProLine VW Baja Body. :whistle:

you can remove the chrome from the plastic rims with some oven cleaner before dying

Chrome as used on plastic parts usually takes dye pretty good. I just checked a few chrome cheyenne rimms i've dyed black and after removing chrome they still remain black. the dye penetrates through the chrome; mine where dyed a few hours, that's a fact.

With chrome on the rimms you get an ultimate high-gloss finish

Yes, I know I could do that but I still want that chrome look to them. I will dye them orange or red.

Maybe a few hours like serum did. :lol:

Wow those chrome turned out sweet!

That would look good with chrome dyed black. Kind of like the popular "hyper-chrome" of some import wheels. Good idea!

One thing, did you boil the water, pour it into another container and then add the dye like what misbehavin said. Is it ok to let the dye solution cool while the wheels are soaking?

Or did you have the water boiling/simmering the whole time that the wheels were soaking in the solution.

I have one old large pot that I used. Boiled water on the stove & then turned off, poured the dye in very carefully, stirred, added wheels very slowly to the mix. Let them soak for 1 hour. Carefully removed them and then rinsed in clean cold water.

The wabash had to be done 2 at a time. So remember how long they soak and use similiar amount of dye for each soak so the color will be consistent from wheel to wheel. I was able to do all 4 2.2 wheels at one time.

I was concerned if the wheels boiled or even simmered for a long time that it would distort or soften the wheel's.

scored a proline baja body, 'eh? maxx or revo 3.3 size? i'm still trying to decide what i'm going to do with my maxx-sized version.

I got the Maxx size Baja body which is cool. Sometimes I think a shorter(or smaller) body looks better. I didnt realize you still had one. Maybe I was thinking of the one that went with the...........well, uh...I wont say it outloud. :surprised:

The Rustler is ALWAYS up for a good time. Just grab it & go. It's kinda the ole stand by now. Very dependable and very fast.

However, that Losi Speed T sure does seem very well put together at just $320.

yeah, the supermaxx had a revo 3.3 proline baja shell that went, but i also have the maxx sized one. trimmed, but still unpainted.
