What controller for 8S that has a true brake??

Hey guys, its time to upgrade my 9920 to something a little bigger that will take at least up to 8S and will run a 4 pole Neu as I'm ordering another 1521 1.5D to run on my 3905 emaxx. The catch is it has to have a brake since I don't have a mechanical system on this truck. Right now its running an 8XL on 6S, and just doesn't have enough to break 70mph. I have tried everything and just doesn't seem to have enough torque to get it past that barrier. So I'm hoping this setup will do it. What controller would you guys suggest running? The 1521 1.5D is 1900KV with 110 max amp draw rating.

potreinas 03.21.2008 03:14 PM

I usually recomend MGM, 16024 or 12032, but with the problems I'm having... I'll not recomend you mgm, Mine doesn't brake with motors with more than 2 poles, with feigao works near perfect, but with neu or align 600xl... pufff....

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 03:16 PM

Crap, I was hoping the MGM would have brakes with a Neu. Other then MGM their isn't anything reasonable out there with a brake. Someone needs to come up with a mech. brake system for the new emaxx...hehe

bdebde 03.21.2008 03:19 PM

I have no brake problems with MGM 16024 and Neu 1515 2.5D. In fact, too much brake will do a front flip!

potreinas 03.21.2008 03:32 PM

I didn't want to say that it has no brakes, but mine has this issue that mgm is trying to solve.
I suppose finally i'll send it for repair, and this is the 2nd time. for the same esc. and this is 3.21 firmware.

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 03:43 PM

Sounds like their aren't really to many options out there. Does BK make anything that will handle what I'm looking for or Kontronick? I just need brakes and 8S capability with the Neu motor.

BL_RV0 03.21.2008 03:50 PM

I recall seeing a BK 12036 somewhere.... Can't remember where though. Plus, the BK's don't like multipole motors.

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 03:52 PM

Has anyone confirmed that the BK's will not run a Neu 4 pole motor?? I have a stash of BK 9920's and it would be nice to run it on 6S in the meantime till I can find a controller worth a crap to run this motor.

lutach 03.21.2008 04:27 PM

I would look for the new Schulze coming out soon. They will have the following:

fut-l-24.150WK (10-24 Ni-cells, 3-8 Li-cells, 150A (200A), Opto-coupler, Splash water protection and Water cooling)
fut-l-32.115 (10-32 Ni-cells, 3-10 Li-cells, 115A (150A) and Opto-coupler)
fut-l-32.115WK (same as above but with Splash water protection and Water cooling)
fut-l-40.100 (10-40 Ni-cells, 3-14 Li-cells, 100A (133A) and Opto-coupler)
fut-l-40.100WK (same as above but with Splash water protection and Water cooling)

Man I just wish my controllers were done.

Yes. They will not run 4 pole motors. In the manual it says they can run them, but when I tried it was a no go.

kingiggy262 03.21.2008 04:38 PM

You could look at the Kontronik Jazz 55-10-32 speed controller. I have heard good results from people here on the forums with the Jazz.

lutach 03.21.2008 04:44 PM

I would've recommended the Jazz as I have a few, but the motor he will be using might be too much for it. Even the mighty Jazz might not handle the 1521/1.5D.

Will they have a brake option???

The 1521 1.5D doesn't look like it will be an amp hog. Since the emaxx is light compared to what this motor can actually pull I'm hoping amp draw will stay at a minimum. Also I will have it geared for 70mph or so max....or just enough to break that 70mph barrier. I'm only 3mph shy.....sad that I'm about to spend $600+ to gain those 3mph....hehe

othello 03.21.2008 04:54 PM

The Jazz 55-10-32 has no problems braking a Neu 1512 or neu 1515 on 10s1p A123 (comparable to 8s lipos). If i want to i can lock all wheels. when i do have to much grip the car will make a front flip when i'm too hard on the brakes. That's why i reduced brake to 95% on my remote.

11lbs truggy with Neu 1512 (1400kv): clip1, clip2, clip3
Same Truggy with Neu 1515/2Y (1100kv): clip1, clip2

The Jazz ESC is able of peak Amps above 120A eventhough it's only speced for bursts up to 65A.

Yes. I have the 40.160H and it works very well in my truck.

aqwut 03.21.2008 06:37 PM

I have 2 MGM24.160 and the brakes are just way too strong... even on the lowest settings... if you throttle lower than the current RPM, it will slow the motor right down... I need a firmware update, but don't want to send it to MGM... if you have the new firmware.. then it would be great...

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 07:24 PM

Hmm sounds like I am better sticking to another HV110 and just thottle it down....especially since a Neu pulls down a truck quick once you let off. Also looks like MGM's are not the ticket either....

I would if I wasn't putting dual brushless into my GST.. :) the 40.160WK is the smoothest ESC I've ever used...

or The cheap HobbyCity Turnigy Sentilon 12S 100A ESC... $100 and I'm really digging those ESCs....

You know anybody that has tried one of the Turnigy's??? How does it compare to the HV110??? I'm looking to buy one this week.....

aqwut 03.21.2008 09:38 PM

I have about 10 of them... I love them... They have constant of 100A... but on 12S, that's enough juice... I'm ordering 6 more tonight.... Each ESC can output 4440Watts of continuous power... for $100 that's is Just plane awesome... I've used this with one of my Savages and 7XL and 4S... works great.. only thing is.. you'll have to use mechanical brakes... which I don't mind...

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 09:40 PM

Hmm how do they do with heat...does a heatsink need to be added? One thing I forgot though is will it work with a 4 pol motor though?

aqwut 03.21.2008 09:44 PM

They work with 2, 4, 6+ pole motors... there is a heatsink installed.... just add a small fan for extra cooling... it's great...

The only thing I recommend doing is siliconing the Capacitors together.. or shoeGoo... they need to be secured better...

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 09:45 PM

I wish my emaxx had mech. brakes......guess I'll just have to play with the throttle to slow the truck down on high speed passes.

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 09:46 PM

What are you doing for programming it? Did you buy the programming card?

yup.. I used the program card.. it's easy to do...
I just ordered 6 more ESCs....

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 11:02 PM

I just ordered the card and the ESC just now as well. How long does it take to get them....?

aqwut 03.21.2008 11:17 PM

I usually get them in about a week... I usually choosed (registered mail)... for me in Canada, it gets here faster than it does from the US...

jzemaxx 03.21.2008 11:22 PM

Cool deal...I may order a backup one for my XTM MMT brushless conversion. I just ordered a new motor from NEU for it. Its a 1524, which is not listed. 1527 power output, but the KV I wanted.....should be awesome. On 10S I hope to run 70+ with it.....we'll see.

potreinas 03.22.2008 07:45 AM

turnigy 12s doesn't have electrical brake, so is not useful for the 8S with real brake that he is looking for. also I notice it has a forward delay, may be 0'3seconds to start accelerating, do you notice this?

I know it doesn't have electric brakes.. I only informed him of this ESC because he mentioned the HV110... About the delay.. yeah, I do notice the delay, but like you said, it's only at the startup, and doesn't bother me too much.. since once you start, you just don't stop... :):yipi:

jzemaxx 03.22.2008 10:24 AM

Yeah I noticed the delay, but no biggie. I will set the gain to just bump the ESC enough to keep it off the delay, but not move the truck. I will just have to use the motor as the brake for now. These are speed runs, so its not a big deal.

Do you like to have spares, or have you got 6 vehicles to convert? Starting to sound like me, too many projects!

Have you checked the tracking?... Mine's not in yet either... they're closed for last weeks easter weekend.... Mine will take longer because my package is 6.5KG... Air Parcel..

Am I allowed to choose both.. I like to have a few spares, and I have a few to convert.. I was going to make quad brushless firehammer MT for when I go to the WFRCCC Event, but since I'm not going, I will just make it a dual brushless.. so I'll have 2 Spares..

2 more for the CEN GST and Neu 1527/2.5D, instead of 2x 24.160... I always wondered how would the cheap Hong Kong esc work for the NeuMotors.....

sorry for being off topic...
but I really like those ESCs....

** To get rid of the delay, just set the throttle trim forward to your desired position.. Mine's at 40% Forward, so there's hardly any delay.
