Life changing events

Thought I would share some gore with you all  in hopes of scoring a butler monkey

These are the photo's of the aftermath of an arguement I recently had with a tablesaw. I got into the thumb and pointer finger pretty good, chopped about 1/8" off the nuckle end of my middle finger bone ( read no more nuckle function ), and now I think I'll have to close the door on my mobile mechanics business. Time to start looking into new career options, a life change moment.

Oh yah, Happy Easter (if you are christian and serious about your relationship with Jesus, give a prayer for my healing and resources for my family while I recover, thanks :)

I'll keep this thread up to date on the progress both physically and with the job progress.

jokerjustin 03.23.2008 11:16 AM

wow bro i hope things turn out ok for u...

lutach 03.23.2008 12:24 PM

I wish you all the best my friend. If we lived closer I would definitely help you out.

gtxracer 03.23.2008 12:49 PM

Damn! :oh: Will you get back full use besides the knuckle? Best of luck to you, keep chuggin along

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 02:16 PM

gtxracer, yah I should get back full use besides the knuckle. There is still some question about how much feeling I will get back in the tips of my thumb and pointer, only time will tell...

Luatch, I apreciate the feeling :) where exactly do you live? I've been curious for some time now, I see the "only in brazil" in your avitar, but also get the impression you are here in the US ?

jokerjustin, I'm confident they will, it's just a question of how and when...

I have used the spare time I've got latley to get back into some cad drafting of idea's I've got. I'll post up some stuff when it's been sent off to the pattent office for review (just starting the patent process gets me some protection against the idea's being stolen).

Two of the ideas will be rooted in the RC field as they are easier to model in scale and should upgrade what's out there now. The first one I'm going to persue is a new design of shocks that will valve much differently than anything out there, yet be pneumatic to eliminate springs and be adjustable in every aspect. The drawings and text is just about done so I'll be posting it up in a day or two.

Second idea is a new way of doing an internal combustion engine that there is nothing similar to that I've seen, and I've studied just about every engine advance there has been ( even some of the real one off stuff that never got past the development stage, honda, toyota, nissan, wankle, offenhouser, ect...). It will have 2.7 times the power per CC than a standard 2 stroke race engine, and will scale down really well. It only has 5 moving parts and no crank, rods, valves, or counterweights. 0 vibration, variable displacement and compression, about 1/8th the size per cc of a standard 4 stroke engine, and ~40,000 rpm (depending on the fuel used) with an exceptionally flat torque and hp curve. Big claims I know, but I do believe it will be the future ( and most likley end ) of internal cumbustion engines, with electric being the final replacement for all automotion. I can't wait to share it with all you guys. ( and honda, if it developes well )

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 02:19 PM

I am also pondering the workings of our brushless motors. I think the magnets are a limiting factor in the general design. No matter how much force the windings pull, they are still working against a static magnet. I.E. if there were stronger magnets to make the rotor out of, the whole motor would produce more force per watt.

I wounder if going with an electromagnetic rotor would increase the force to a point of overcoming the efficiency of the work the natural magnet produces on its own. Like putting a brushed style rotor in a brushless wound can ( just use a ring style contact as opposed to a slotted contact). One could even pulse the rotor once to feedback through the can windings to tell the exact rotor position. When braking, the regenerative voltage could work just like a standard alternating generator. The outcome being, using less watts ( say than that of a nue 1521) to make more power (than a 1521) in a can the size of a 1509. Could possibly even reduce watts lost to heat by deviding the work equally between each set of windings (rotor and can). Think it's worth persuing? (lots and lots of math involved, learning about field density, electromotive force, esc design, esc).

lutach 03.23.2008 02:38 PM

I was born in Brasil and came to the US when I was 10. I'm in NJ now and the only reason I'm here is because of my daughter. I would love to go back to FL.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 02:41 PM

I was thinking that it looked like Jersy in some of your RC vids :) Good to know.

lutach 03.23.2008 02:47 PM

Keep us posted on your ideas. I sent a few chassis and motor mounts design to see if Mike can make them and he said they were doable. I will use them to make speed runs. The truggy chassis can be used with 44.4 or 74 volts and with the SHV from CC, it should make a fun ride for sure. I'm also waiting for an F1 car that I plan on running 36 or 72 volts.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 02:52 PM

Have you gotten the SHV from CC already? I'm still hoping the MMM will show up in a 12S when it finally is released. I've got a hyper7 pbs waiting for it, the lipo's and a RCM mount. Ultimatley I want to do an Erevo with a center diff.

pipeous 03.23.2008 02:55 PM

I had to walk around the house holding my hands after seeing that.... my brother is a mechanic and did something similar but only took his thumb off. I still can see tht day (he lived next door to us) when he walked over with a towel around his bloody hand and asked if we had any gauze and tape lol. ya well we rushed him to the hospital for some stitching to connect the thumb... it was hanging by skin....

I play guitar and seeing that pic scares me... and I run a mobile detailing business so man... it would kill me too... good luck on the recovery

The SHV is not ready yet. Patrick said something about an April release date. I hope the MMM is 12S and it should be because in rcgroups they have some posts saying the advantages of HV.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 03:06 PM

pipeous, If you don't have insurance for your biz yet, better get it. I don't have it for mine, and I'm real lucky this happened at the Habitat for Humanity work site ( building a H4H house for me and my family :), they have ins. for this kind of thing. Charge more if you need to, but don't take the risk like I was.

You Canadians have health care, but paying the bills is hard when you can't work.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 03:09 PM

luatch, would you be stuck with outrunners for that high of a voltage (thinking less than 600kv with 74 volts) ? or are there inrunners that go that low?

pipeous 03.23.2008 03:28 PM

Yes, before I started the business, I was a detailer at Pattison Toyota. When I quit I lost all my benefits. I got a loss of work plan through my bank actually, plus I have an ICBC garage policy, 2 million liability (in case someone slips in my soap or water) theft etc...

I have been involved in a civil suit before and just barely got out of it, thanks to a friend finding a small piece of paper a year after the fact and it was a 4 million lawsuit... it's not worth taking chances. my insurance is not cheap but a necessary evil in this world with so many people that try to claim for nothing...

I can't look at that pic.... breakfast won't stay down if I do...

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 03:39 PM

LOL, sorry bro, I thought about just putting up the hyperlink and not the photo's but some guy's get a rise out of it... Glad to hear you've get the ins thing covered :)

Some people are just unreal in their greed, I'm constantly amazed ( and feel the same about them as when you see the pic's of my hand, LOL :)

Here are some choices so far:

Neu Motors

1527/3D 770Kv (Will be almost at the RPM limit)
1527/3.5D 660Kv
1527/2Y 625Kv
1527/2.5Y 500Kv
1527/3Y 420Kv
1521/2Y 780Kv (Will be almost at the RPM limit)
1521/2.5Y 630Kv
1521/3Y 525Kv
1515/3Y 725Kv (Will be almost at the RPM limit)

Mega Motors

ACn22/50/3 710Kv
ACn22/45/3E 800Kv

Lehner

30xx

Kv from 404 to 808

2280

Kv from 411 to 822

1950

Kv from 418 to 836

Plettenberg

Bolido
HP 370/50/A1 S
HP 370/40/A2 Heli
HP 300/40/A3 Heli

The right motor will depend on the SHV controller. I will try to keep the RPMs between 30000 (For normal running) to 60000 (For speed runs).

JERRY2KONE 03.23.2008 04:03 PM

Wow.

Once again DrKnow sorry to hear about, and now SEE your pain:gasp:. Cool photos. It could have been much much worse. The best thing to hear is that you are approaching this from a positive perspective:yipi:. Too many people go into some sort of depression and spiral downward in the aftermath of such a disaster:eyes:. Like I have said in other posts life marches on no matter what we do. So keep your chin up and stay onboard the life train. Even through all of our suffering we still have to manage forward motion and happy days WILL still find their way into our path. We can tell you are a good man and that will always be followed by good things. Best wishes to you and your family through all of this:yes:.

Your engineering ideas sound pretty cool. At least you are finding ways to remain creative during your recovery. I am just about to update my life changing events thread as well. I am back home in Belgium and ready to move on with our lives parenting my three small children. Good luck to you man and keep your spirits up.

MetalMan 03.23.2008 04:05 PM

Man, what happened to you is like my worst nightmare. Just this past week alone I logged at least 6 hours on my scroll saw, I'm glad that's done for after seeing your hand!

I really hope your recovery goes well. We're all rooting for you.

suicideneil 03.23.2008 06:20 PM

Whats that noisr you make whe you see someone getting really baddly hurt on a youtube vid?.... Gruwhuhhh! Nasty business.

Anyway, regards the BL motor idea, I believe there is a company producing AC induction motors that dont use permanent magnets, but at the moment they havent made anything small enough or suitable for RC use.

Im interested in the new engine design idea- if that works out you wont have to worry about working much I imagine :mdr:

Oh, and just to add insult to injury, have you seen this Drknow? http://www.sawstop.com/

I know, I know, Im an evil bar-steward. I wish you a speedy and full recovery man, I would hate to loose any use of my hands, and someone who relies on them for work (like you do) would miss them even more. Get well soon.

Fast5sRevo88 03.23.2008 06:43 PM

With that being the outcome of an argument with table saw, u better watch what u say around your lawnmower; bad idea!

rchippie 03.23.2008 07:07 PM

Sorry about your hand, but it looks like you got off lucky.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 11:02 PM

Got off way lucky, a moment of not looking and bang, it's done...

MetalMan, what were you doing on the scroll saw for 6 hours??? (building something cool out of aluminum I hope...)

Suicideniel, I've seen some of the stuff about AC brushless motors, but it does look far off for it to go RC...

Dang Luatch, you've looked into the low KV motors!!! What do people use to spin those motors now? Are there already esc's that will do over 40v?
P.S. did you ever try a TCS cooling system? I was looking at some old posts and saw you had interest at one point. I'm thinking about doing a stage 2 mod to my MM with a liquid cooler sandwitched between the boards (pressed for room in a 1/10 buggy I'm running, very little air flow without perferating the body)

The most lipos I've heard or seen was only 15S. The lower Kv motor will produce more torque than the higher Kv ones. I forgot to mention the Neu 22xx that might fit the bill as well. I will be putting together some form of liquid and Peltier cooling system. I already found a few manufacturers of mini water pumps. I've also spoke with a couple manufacturers of Peltier devices that can custom make them to fit around non finned motors. All I need to do now is find a source for the radiator (Water cooled heatsinks) for the ESC, motor and the whole cooling system. I'm still trying to figure out the most reliable way to go about doing it.

DrKnow65 03.23.2008 11:42 PM

Can you post a few links for the pumps you've found? I see the TCS pump but have had no luck reaching them for more info. I'd like a cost effective alternitive to the TCS pump.

I will search my e-mails to get the data sheets of them. It might take a day or two, because I contacted the manufacturers a long time ago. I usually keep my company's e-mails organised, but I have no clue where I put the e-mails I got from them .

Edit: Here are 2: http://www.alita.com/dcpump/micropump.php and http://www.chinamicropump.com/

I will have to search for the others as I contacted them in 2003.

lincpimp 03.24.2008 12:01 AM

Wow, best of luck with the recovery. I burned my hands on a fixed gill pit at a park when I was young, took almost all of the skin off both palms. Luckily I was hit by a car the year later and have no memory of my chilhood (8yrs and younger). I have very little hot/cold sensation in my hands, but have devoloped much stronger tactile sesation to make up for it. That is handy as I do auto paint and body work and it is very handy (pun?) to be able to feel the surface for imperfections.

I really hope that you get better and regain most if not all use of those fingers!

If I had a monkey butler he would be on his way to you, but the ASPCA took him away:cry:

DrKnow65 03.24.2008 12:14 AM

you keep me smiling lincpimp :), damn though burn hands, hit by car, monkey removed... I'm feeling bad for YOU now :) You rewound a motor, did you read the idea about a brushed/brushless hybrid? think it would work?

Luatch, I have also looked into those pumps, the tube style one looks too big for RC (65mm long) and the chinamicropump does not sell straight to the consumer... Looks like TCS is stil the best bet. Just no response and expensive for what it is ($68 plus shipping, if that is even current info).

Wow, that saw stop thing is pretty impressive. It's $69-89 for a replacement cartridge each time the safety mechanism is used, which I guess is cheaper and easier to buy than new fingers.
One of our woodwork teachers in high school was about 60 and had been doing that sort of work for probably 40 years, but he put one of his fingers in a table saw at school one day, so anybody can have simple mistakes like that which turn out bad.

Good luck with your hand, and those inventions. Maybe you'll be able to release your motor before the mmm motor

I'm searching for the quote I got from them. It's funny how things seems to vanish when I try looking for it, but when I'm not trying, I can find almost anything . I might use the long one for my chassis, as it will be ong .

DrKnow65 03.24.2008 12:25 AM

Yah Patrick, I'm actually going to use CC to build the ESC since they are so reliable in their estimate dates for new products hahahahaha. One of the local high school wood shops has one, should have ran over to use theirs for that last cut of the day :)

Lutach (think I misspell that often, sorry) if you find something like the tcs for a good price let me know please.

Hickoryhead 03.24.2008 11:36 PM

Don't count to many chickens till they hatch. My father got into a fight with a forklift and lost. He smashed his hand pretty bad in it. Broke a lot of the bones 5 and 6 times over. The doctors told him he would never be able to use his hand again. Today he has 100% use of it. If fact he has the incredible ablility to tell you the weather with it. Says it hurts when a storm is coming in. Might just be him though. 15 years ago he had cancer and was given 6 weeks to live. He is still here to see his grand kids.

He's not alone on the weather telling part. My joints (The many bad ones ) hurts a lot when there is a storm approaching. It might have to do with the pressure.

I agree i have broken my leg twice and they had to glue, screw, and pin it back together and what ever else they do. Now i can magically predict the weather, rather accurately i might add!:surprised:

suicideneil 03.25.2008 12:17 PM

Now thats just plain weird, but handy too.

On the subject of mini water pumps, it would be worth looking at PC modding websites, as I know for certain I have seen some little 6-12v pumps that go with watercooling setups, and Im sure some of them would be suitable. I'll post up some links later if I can find them again...

DrKnow65 03.25.2008 12:26 PM

Thanks HickoryHead, that's just the kind of thing I like hearing nowadays!

Weather joke: In a small town somewhere in America there was a radio weatherman, everyday he would forcast the weather incorrectly. Everyday someone would call in, to tell him to go see the indian chief down on the reservation as the chief would allways predict the weather correctly.

Every day the weather man was wrong, everyday the chief was right. Everyday someone would call and tell the weatherman to go see the chief....

So finaly the weatherman broke down his pride and went to see the chief. He arrived to find the chief in his wigwam and proceeded to ask him for the weather. The chief raised his staff, waived it about and proclaimed the tomarrows weather would be sunny (Ha, hought the weatherman "it's sure to rain tomarrow"), the next day came and sure enough it was a beutiful sunny day. Very upset the weatherman went back to the chief and grilled him about how he managed to forcast so accuratley. After some discussion the chief conceded to show him his secret.

The chief after swearing the weatherman to secrecy pulled back his deer skin blanket to reveal a small am radio, he then explaned how everyday there is this radio moron who would come on to forcast the weather, what ever the moron said the chief would just say the opposite! :)

pipeous 03.25.2008 12:43 PM

I was in a motorcycle accident many years ago, while I was playing in the band. I was thrown 42 feet through the air and impacted into the side of the mountain. It was all jagged rocks. I was knocked out. Ruptured kidney, bit the tip of my toungue off, big hole in my helmet, broken left leg, right leg had been cut right around my knee almost all the way around and went down past my ankle. Other small injuries. It cut all the nerves in my leg. I was told I'd never walk properly again. For 6 months I had that pins and needles feeling when you fall asleep with your leg hanging over the end of a couch or something. I had to learn to walk again with this floppy limb.... well I just retired from hockey as a goalie, so I guess the knee turned out pretty good after all. I still have no feeling in my leg and I can tell when it's going to snow.

You just need to be diligent in rehab and believe you will heal. I took a beating in hockey and had many injuries, even to that same leg (I played Div 1 for many of those years) and the only injuries that really bothers me in my old age now is my ankle, and I never even went to the doc when I busted that, so it's my own fault.

DrKnow65 03.25.2008 12:49 PM

Thanks pipeous, I my holding out hope and have a good feeling about rehabing the finger. I've got realy strong hands fron twisting wrenches so the strength is there. I've got feeling (though I'm not sure about how it ends up where the scar tissue will be on the tips of my fingers...) so I'm good there. The only hard part about moving them, is how tight the skin is where it was stiched, and the pins... still no time frame on when they come out.

JERRY2KONE 03.25.2008 01:03 PM

Tight.

Well the skin will be tight for a while due to the swelling in your hand. Even if it does go down it will hold some of the swelling due to the amount of damage you did to it. That may take a few weeks before it goes completely down and then things will ease up some. Having feeling at this point is really a good sign. That shows promise. Full recovery is always relative to the amount of total damage that is done. Still from the looks of your photos I believe that you will end up with only a small amount of loss. Stay tough and just know that no matter what happens that you are still going to move forward. Positive thinking can create miracles so to speak.

I have to say that I have seen much worse. Do you watch the "Home Extreme Makover" show? The British guy tore his hand up with a cutting tool with a chainsaw disc attached to it. It mangled his hand so badly that he never thought he would regain the use of it again, but he is nearly back to full use and still doing the show as a master carpenter. No worries mate.

pipeous 03.25.2008 01:08 PM

you know the funny part of my leg breaking was it happened after I got out of the hospital. all the damage in the accident was on my right side of my body... I only had 3 stitches on my left leg, 56 on my right and plastic surgery. btw I was the passenger on the bike, which is why I got pitched so hard when the bike crashed. My father worked for ICBC, and because of that I had to meet an independant insurance adjuster after the fact. he was out for lunch, so my bud said let's shoot a game of pool why we wait. I was walking with crutches and used the left leg mostly. I got up to shoot and turned a bit to look at a shot and pop... hey dude my leg kind of hurts... he heard the pop too. well the emergency said it was nothing and to see my family Doc. she took xrays and the tech showed them to me in the elevator ride back up and the outer bone had a hairline fracture that opened up. I couldn't have a cast or I'd lose all mobility so we tensor bandaged it up. I refused the prescription for pain killers because I think that slows the healing down, and I hate taking meds. Doc was shocked I handed back that paper and said no thanks... I lived near the top of what they called 1000 steps in Trail, BC. I walked those stairs twice a day. must have looked funny since I flopped one leg and the other couldn't bend. I had to use my crutch on my right foot when driving to push the gas pedal (had to do grocery shopping somehow) but at least my left could still work the clutch and brake.

I think Docs try to prepare us for the worst by giving a worse case scenario, but the human mind can overcome a lot. I use a lot of natural healing type stuff. My hockey buddies got use to the smell of my fav balm Zeng Gui Shui. It smells kind of like tiger balm, but it speeds the healing process by increasing blood flow to the area. don't get it in an open wound and wash before going to the bathroom (I made the mistake of using it on a pulled groin once.... the wife fell out of bed laughing as I went screaming, literally, for the bathroom to wash up LOL). I learned about that stuff long ago from a martial arts instructor. now you can get it most health food stores and it really works.
