For The Love Of God.... Someone Help Me.....
I give up.
I ordered an MGM 16018 controller to use with my 5S Revo from Mike. The first one was defective out of the box. Mike sent me a new one and was very helpful. The second one worked fine except out of the blue, it would nose dive. No rhyme, no reason, just nose dive at will... different speeds, no way of duplicating it. That was a few months ago. Mike didn't have any so I 've had to wait a few months for another to come in. I received it yesterday and installed it. I reset the radio/controller end points and then programmed the controller using the software. The good news is it doesn't nose dive at will. That's gone. The bad news is if you pull the trigger at anymore than half throttle and then hit the brakes, the car speeds up first and THEN starts to come to a stop. So far in less than 15 minutes of running, I've caused 400 dollars in damage breaking the ground effects on my wife's car, ruined a brand new wheelie bar, revo wing and rear bumper. I changed all my settings and changed back from "cutoff" to "low voltage" and now it coasts between forward to reverse. I've increased and decreased the neutral zone percentages, I have zero dead spot on throttle on the radio. I give up. Mike has been more than helpful throughout this but I think it's just time to get rid of the controller. Anyone have any suggestions before I sink it at the bottom of the creek? Mark |
Put it on ebay, and Make a note that says "linc, do not buy this" in your description.
Seems like quite a few people have issues with mgm controllers. I have not used one myself, and am wating on the MMM to come out. All this negative info makes me wary of the mgm products... |
Wow. I really wish I could help but have no experience with MGM ESCs. Sounds like you have demons in your truck. All I can say is "don't give up"!

After spending almost 1500 bucks converting this over (that includes 600 in batteries) I'm just gonna put the whole thing on ebay. I'll just get the new erevo...lol. Mark |
You know this 'feature' in the MGM controller where the actual throttle position determines the speed the motor is running at?
so if you go from WOT to 5 percent, the car brakes as hard as it can to make the motor turn at 5 percent.. it might be an explanation.. |
Do you have the "frewheel" option switched on? I remember that people had issues getting this to work.

Good idea, I'll try that.... (just as soon as I pull the trans and find out what broke)
Can't get it running right but can get it running long enough to break the trans. Mark |
Radio
Hey what radio are you using with this controller? Maybe there is a communication issue between the two? Like linc says we know it is frustrating but you should keep trying. Maybe one of the guys who have more experience with the MGM can either help to get it set up, or maybe even set it up for you and send it back. Then you will know for sure if something is wrong with the MGM or something else. For the money anything is worth a try, and when it is finally setup and running all of the bad will be lost. If there is one characteristic that matters most in our hobby it is patients. and maybe a good shot of Tiquila once in a while. Good luck with your issues.

Check all of your connections and solder joints. If you are using the computer software, reset to defaults and reprogram to your radio. You will want the freewheeling set to ON.
|
A few guys have reported some similar problems that you have been having in this thread: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...gm+low+voltage
If you read through it you can find settings that they used to try to correct the issues. Topas and lutach talk about the acceleration while braking issue on page 8. MGM has also released some firmware updates that you could try out. I think the latest out is 3.22 |
There is a mess-up in the manual, that freewheel option isn't free-wheel as you might know it.. I had the same weird programming thing with my 24160..

Jerry, I'm using a Spektrum 3.0 radio. It's the same one I've been using. Each time I use a different (same brand, same model, just different controller), I get different problems. Quote:
That's what I've been doing until I received the new controller. Maybe I need to go back to doing that AGAIN... [QUOTE=kingiggy262;164680]A few guys have reported some similar problems that you have been having in this thread: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...gm+low+voltage Thanks King, the new controller is 3.22.... new updates, new problems. So what are you saying? Use or not use freewheel? I've got it "on" now. Thanks all... Mark |
Try it with freewheel off.
|
Whatever.

OJCrush - Try it with the freewheel off and see what it does. I know it is a pain to change just one thing and them run the truck, but sometimes that is the only way to get it right. And make sure that you have all ofthe weird settings in the spectrum centered. I had a JR 3i fm and it gave me fits until I thoroughly read the manual and made sure everything was setup correctly. |
Nah, it's not a PIA to keep making adjustments. I'm sitting on the floor with my laptop making changes.
I've tried one thing at a time and damn near broke my wrist when it took off right at me as I was trying to drive it in. Everytime you hit the brake, it ACCELERATES for a second or two and then applies brakes. You should see my wife's car.... I smashed the ground effect (fiberglass) when it ran into it. (thank god I own two bodyshops) I'll try it again with freewheel off. Mark |

Lock
You might try locking into some kind of stand before doing anymore testing, just to be sure it will not hit anything else expensive. Then once you have the settings where you think they need to be test it in an open field or an empty parking lot where there in nothing else to hit except you. JUMP...

One shop is a 10K sq. ft building for collision repair. Last Tuesday was our 11th year anniv. Everything we do is word of mouth and referall. No phone books, no advertising.... It's in Indian Trail, NC. My other shop is only 2 years old. It's a 12K building that does collision and mostly restorations. At 2 years old, it still sucks. (takes a while to really get established) It's in Monroe, NC. Quote:
It's hard to remember that hitting the brake gives it gas for a second and then it brakes. (breaks...lol) I don't know what else to do. I've changed about every parameter one parameter at a time. Same issue. Mark |
I had something similar with both of my 24.160... it works almost like a air plane ESC, just like Serum said, it would slow the motor down if you went down with your throttle... I've tried adjusting the freewheel option also, but it didn't do anything for me.... You have a lot of problems man, wish I could help you out more..

Needs
Just what we need another lincpimp painter in the gang to stir things up. Don't you have some bodies to paint linc. No worries orangecrush we can always use more imput and it's always nice to have nubies in the bunch. Not only do we try to help out here, but we like to have some fun to. Watch out for linc though. He's got wild animals running around the house.:rofl::whistle: Lets hope that with a few days in here you might be able to settle your issues with the MGM. Good luck with that.:mdr:

I fixed the trans (had to replace a pin) but one of the times that the throttle floored itself, it trashed some steering servo linkages.... point is, I took it apart so the POS controller will have to wait. :grrrrrr: |

I have owned mine for about 3 years, and grew up here as my dad bought it when I was 12. We do about 1/2 and 1/2 owner pay and ins, and I do not do any direct repair for ins companies. I stay busy, especially last week, no time for R/C! Good luck with the mgm, I am awaiting the MMM as much as you are... |

I'm running 30 mph. I hit the brakes, it's almost speeds up for about 20 feet and then slows down and stops like normal. If you're running 4-5 miles per hour, it'll stop like normal. The faster you go, the worse it gets. It literally TAKES OFF when you hit the brakes for 20-30 feet and then all is normal. As long as you're over the 4-5 mph, it'll do it every time. I have tried EVERY setting possible and can't change the results. Quote:
Yup, same here... no DRP's for me. Of course, it hurts when times are slow. You're right, last few weeks, we can't breathe... it's been BUSY. I can't wait till the MMM comes out. I've had too much trouble with the MGM. I'm done with it. |
WHat motot and what timing are you using? I am wondering of it has something to do with the motor poles or windings or something. I had a similar problem to this at one time with a MGM, but it was not consistant like yours. Mine was very random and not very frequent, but when it happened it sure freaked you out.
Mine was that one out of every 250 (estimate) times you hit the brakes it would accelerate like you described, but only for a second or 2, then it would give no brakes at all. It would just coast in freewheel untill you gave it gas again then it would brake like normal. I was running a Neu 1515/2.5D on it when I was having these problems. Later I swapped it to anothr model and ran a Hacker B50-0XL on the same MGM controller and never had a single issue. I'm just wondering if higher pole count motors make the MGM work 2wice as hard and confuse it or something. I would at least send a note to MGM about your problem and be verys specific about all of the pertinent info. They might be able to sugest a solution. If nothing else a software fix would only be a download away now if the can program a solution for you. Good luck man. |

unless you sell it to me cheep:diablo:  |
Thanks guys... that's about the only thing I haven't tried. (changing radios/receiver)
I'm using the 1515 motor also. I'll make a few changes and email MGM and see what they say. Thanks, Mark |
lol I am having issues with random braking....I think the update will fix it...I have 2 MMM's on order cause I don't have time being at home with kids to spend hours to get it to work correctly.....my time is scarce these days
