New ESC and it's looking good

4 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

Here is the thread of the ESC that I was waiting for. This ESC is very nice and it is the only one that I know of in the US that has the car mode working. All the ones available in the US are for Aircraft only. This controller has a new 8 layer PCB, 120A max continous AMPs, Wireless programming and a built in Switching BEC 5V/2.4A cont. and 4A burst that works with up to 6S lipos. I have attached some pictures.

A few more. I will start tesing it tomorrow and I'll let you all know how it went.

What's_nitro? 05.06.2008 02:38 PM

That looks like a solid controller, lutach. I like the idea of wireless programming.
What's the price for a thing like that?

jzemaxx 05.06.2008 02:40 PM

How many lipo's will it take?..

EDIT...nevermind....just looked

The aircraft ones are sold through http://www.innov8tivedesigns.com/ind...cPath=22_24_64 and they have it for $179.99. Those don't have the car program and this one has a new PCB. I like the wireless programming too. I'll see how it runs tomorrow.

BrianG 05.06.2008 02:41 PM

Do you mean 8 PCBS, or a single PCB with 8 copper layers?

The heatsink looks nice, but the battery/motor labeling seems a bit superfluous. Interesting to see how it performs. Has about the same specs as a Quark 125; let's see if it will really do 6s well and how much it heats up...

What's_nitro? 05.06.2008 02:43 PM

Yes, it would be an 8-layer PCB, not 8 PCBs.

Five-oh-joe 05.06.2008 02:45 PM

You sneaky guy you! I saw those a while ago (including pics of the program card) and was wondering about the little button that said "car"...:mdr:

Should be fun to see how this thing runs.

I will see how much it'll heat up with 6S and that's all I'm going to run it with. Scorpion Systems said they had to do a new 8 layer PCB to lower the internal resistance. They were 1% less efficient then a Kontronik.

Sometimes it pays to sell electronic components. I wish I could show you the BOM for the PS4 ( I guess I said too much ). I hope they send me the 50V and 63V units as well to test.

83gt 05.06.2008 04:14 PM

Sexy. I was eyeballing those at the site linked quite some time ago. Where in the US can we obtain the car version ?

suicideneil 05.06.2008 04:23 PM

I was just going to ask the very same question, not that it matters any more since I have the MMM coming, but a solid 5/6s lipo escthat is a similar price would be a nice alternative.

sleebus.jones 05.06.2008 04:47 PM

$179 for unknown vs. $170 for castle? Nice find, but you know where my money's going! :)

What's_nitro? 05.06.2008 04:59 PM

The Scorpion stuff isn't really unknown. They're new, but not knockoffs.

I'm with you there...especially since I only spent $152 on my MMM from Mike.

lutach 05.06.2008 05:45 PM

Yes, the price is above the Monster Max. They only sent me ths unit because the 50V and 63V ones are not ready. Those are the ones I'll be really interested in.

I understand. Let us know how this one works out. Did they give you a timeline on the HV models?

They hope to release it for Summer is what was said.

johnrobholmes 05.06.2008 06:04 PM

You sneak! I was waiting on one as well

Keeps sync really well from my testing, but mine didn't have the Car startup on it. They will probably beat Castle to the 12s market here.

DickyT 05.06.2008 06:05 PM

Looks good Lutach. I am interested in seeing your results.

Targeting the masses. If there is anything I learned during 6 years of Compaq tech support followed by 3 years of desktop and 3 years of server support for large enterprises is there are some real ID10T's out there that would wire it up the other way. The labeling is a great idea and liability out for the company should it get hooked up wrong and someone get hurt ;)

Did you hook up the red and black wires from the battery to the red and black wires from the esc? no? Well I'm sorry sir that is the problem and unfortunately for you the directions provided were not followed and your warranty has been voided. thank you for calling.

Sorry . Man this controller is nice. Starts my Mega ACn22/30/2 with out a problem and I'm loving the BEC. It works perfect with 6S.

Maybe thats why so many EVX2s have been going up in smoke over at the traxxas forum....

TexasSP 05.06.2008 06:22 PM

Thanks for sharing this lutach. I hope it goes well and the market will see a 12s car esc soon. Personally, the more of this we can get on the market, the more pressure it puts on all involved to step up.

I'm trying my best. I have asked for a 12S and up controller from basically all the companies that makes ESC. Hoping to see 2 maybe 3 US companies with one. I wish Aveox came back to the market. Specially now that we see 1/8 scale brushless and the need for HV.

suicideneil 05.06.2008 06:45 PM

Have you seen the Aveox website lately? If you have interest in the stuff they sell, you basically have to email them and ask a million questions- all the old motor charts and stuff have vanished when the new website was created. i never did undersand how they rated different motors properly, and now i never will :(

Mister-T 05.06.2008 06:58 PM

A decent alternative :)

I'm jealous that you did own one of the Infamous "Mr.Constructor" car, You do have some serious stuff there :oh:

Yes and it's pathetic. They should have kept the R/C line up and running and lower the price so more people could afford them. Some companies makes me sick with their business concept. I guess the government pays them pretty well for them to completely forget where they all started (My best guess as I've had a Aveox since the early days.

I couldn't pass the Mr. C kit away. Don't forget the BPP which is also another serious machine.

How hot does it get? I'm guessing it's pretty smooth if it can start a 6 pole motor huh?:mdr:

I bench tested for a few seconds and it didn't get warm at all. I also tried to see if the BEC would get warm at all and nothing. I'm having a blast with the Wireless programming.

highflier 05.06.2008 09:10 PM

I have a Aveox motor that needs repair, When I got it they said life time replacement guarentee at 50% of cost. I can not figure out how to get that anymore :(

On the other topic, CC is getting my money via RCM. Don't have much interest in the current one that Lutach is looking at. But we have to give them credit the did beat CC to the market. Now that HV version. That would have me looking real close depending on the pricepoint that is.

I would call Aveox and throw that in their faces. They can't say lifetime and then drop out of the R/C like that. You can send it to Neu and they'll fix it (For a price). Steve Neu used to work with Aveox and the Neu Motors are basically the same design. Castle is here in the US and that's what makes it better. I like the wireless programming feature of this ESC and if Castle does decide on offering a program box, then it would be a definite better choice. I will see how this controller does tomorrow. When and if I do get the HVs here, I will report to all of you.

I've heard that Mr. Neu used to work for Aveox.. so I have always figured it's not a coincidence we have seen the rise of Neutronics and the fall of Aveox fromt eh r/c world.

Side note... my cousin lived in Socal for a while and did some work at Aveox... and they hooked him up with a car system. That was a couple years ago. He says the guys there were really cool, but obviously they aren't concerned with the r/c market. That not where the big/easy money is so I can't blame them if they are raking it in somewhere else.

They could've kept a side of the building just for R/C. If they kept coming out with new technology and made their products a bit cheaper, they would definitely be the leader in BL systems. Do all the government work, but do R/C as well. They would make more money that way.

First run went ok for the speed control, but bad for the slipper clutch. The run only lasted for 3 or so minutes, but this Scorpion Commander can handle the 6S and the BEC was doing a fabulous job. Good news from Scorpion: They will add a bigger heat sink. Everything worked nice. Throttle response in good and I didn't have the "Motor Start Booster" on. Brake is also good, I have the soft brake setting on. It brakes soft like it should, but it's also nice to know if you want to lock the tires, it will if you grab full brake. I have attached a photo of the data and I have set the SPS to 50 for a more detailed graph.

Edit: Graph came out bad. Sorry.

Nice. Im gonna be hitting up lucien for one of these babies as soon as he gets back from the show.

I have a perfect vehicle for the 12s version. My motorbike

. John, this controller is good man. All it needs is a big heat sink and a fan to add that extra things needed for a car controller.

johnrobholmes 05.07.2008 04:47 PM

I have been recommending a few versions to them, the fact that the 6s was first tells a lot about where they may go.
