Nude Mamba Monster...

Well the one I preordered from CC arrived today. I figured that the first ting people would ask is to see what inside. Couldn't read any of the fets as the heatsink was covering all of them, but I snapped a couple pics just to satisfy the curiosity.

Big sucker... Weighs in just shy of 1/4 pound.

Looks just like the one they displayed at iHobby back in October
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h2...M/CIMG3138.jpg

Back side of the board. Looks like the brans and BEC to me, but I'm not electronics expert.

Inside the case. You can see the fan is replaceable. Takes a total disassembly of the esc to get to it though. Looks like a standard 25mm computer fan. The fan wire plugs into the bottom of the board at the little white box next to where the Rx wires are soldered on.

Cool! Thanks for that.

magman 05.07.2008 08:43 PM

Now that is some serious heat sinking!! I can't wait for Mike to get his order in:) Very nice how you can change fans w/ out any de/soldering

lutach 05.07.2008 08:49 PM

It keeps looking better every time I see it.

cemetery gates 05.07.2008 08:55 PM

Looks interesting, I cant wait to get mine from Mike!

Five-oh-joe 05.07.2008 09:03 PM

Wow. That's a big ol' ESC! I counted 36 FETs; they look a little larger than the stock Mamba FETs if that solder hole with the battery wire is any indication. Cool stuff!

Arct1k 05.07.2008 09:05 PM

Funny that it is a brushless fan.... Made in china for those in CA!

Any chance of getting a screenshot of it on castlelink - Interested to confirm what version of firmware it has and what options... thx

What size / voltage are the caps?

Let the mods begin...

Looks like you could eliminate the top cover easily and put a 40mm fan on top instead...

lutach 05.07.2008 09:13 PM

The Monster Max is not big at all. It beats the heck out of my 40.160 size wise.

gixxer 05.07.2008 09:20 PM

thanks, and nice scale. I have the same one and use it for all my stuff.

jhautz 05.07.2008 09:25 PM

The caps are Rubycon 35V 390mfd

Heres a couple pics next to a MM for size comparison.

Five-oh-joe 05.07.2008 09:38 PM

That wire is just massive... That's a serious looking ESC. Big, but not overly ridiculously big like Lutach's 40.160 (now THAT is a HYOOGE ESC).

Looks like they're using the sidewinder logo on almost everything now too...lol!

Electric Dave 05.07.2008 09:39 PM

Thanks for the photos guys...does castle sell the fan as a separate item? I know I blew through about 5 fans last race year and I'd like to have a backup or two in hand.

big greg 05.07.2008 10:03 PM

you get it and the first thing you do is take it apart!!!! lol thanks man

e-mike 05.07.2008 10:35 PM

i dont understand why the esc do not have a bullet plug weld un it..i saw few pics and the esc had some plug weld on it????

hey guy's can you axcept a trade with my old mamba max...:lol:i can not have a good night when i see this pics:yes:please

MTBikerTim 05.07.2008 10:45 PM

Great pictures. Now answer our second question. Video Video Video. I am actually surprised. I really thought it was bigger then that but it's not that bad.

big greg 05.07.2008 10:46 PM

where did you get the fan for the old mm?

jnev 05.07.2008 10:51 PM

Just makes me even more excited to get mine...

joeling 05.07.2008 10:51 PM

Hi jhautz,

Thanks for the pics. So, did the esc came with wires soldered direct to the PCB as shown ?

Regards,
Joe Ling

crazyjr 05.08.2008 12:23 AM

According to posts in other threads, the wires will come on the first run. Due to problems with welding process, for the plugs not being perfected

bdebde 05.08.2008 12:39 AM

Castle did not have a supply of the board mounted bullets for the first production run. They are supposed to have board mounted bullets when the motor combos are available. (info from other threads here)

BL_maxx 05.08.2008 12:40 AM

can this thing run brushed motors???

Yes.

MTBikerTim 05.08.2008 12:55 AM

It would be a massive brushed motor to need this sucker.

BL_maxx 05.08.2008 12:57 AM

wow i think i found what im going to replace my evx with lol. thats cool i didnt know that it could run brushed. wonder what the limit is??

What's_nitro? 05.08.2008 01:01 AM

I'm really liking that single-layer FET board. Great for thermal management. How is that heatsink held on? Just thermal paste? I may pick one up and throw a TEC/WB combo on it! :mdr:

tc3_racer_001 05.08.2008 01:44 AM

W_N, what is TEC/WB stand for? its sick, looks much better than in those other photos ive seen, cant wait!!

It's gotta have a huge limit... The Mamba Max already could handle dual low-turn brushed motors particularly in forward/brake mode, and the Mamba Monster is supposed to have twice the current capability of the MM.

DRIFT_BUGGY 05.08.2008 05:43 AM

Thanks for the photos, comparied to the MM the size doesn't look that much better considering the fan on the mm

Most people run the Novak fans

tc3_racer_001 05.08.2008 06:27 AM

will it be at all possible to rig up a system to power a 200W brushed motor in a scooter with this? like that would let me run a123 cells or somethign just for kicks! any ideas on the throttle controls, having a radio seems crazy!! but im liking the fan idea.

BrianG 05.08.2008 09:47 AM

I would say so. If the "high power" brushed motor hookup method is the same as the MM (where you use all three motor wires as the negative wire, and use the battery positive for the positive wire), it would be good for around 600A!

Since a radio receiver simply sends 1ms-2ms pulses every ~20ms to the servos/ESC, all you have to do is emulate that. I've built a small circuit to test servos using a 555 timer, a couple of small caps, and a few resistors. The caps and resistors set the pulsewidth duty cycle and frequency. Quick and dirty for less than $10. Then, it would be a matter of using a potentiometer in place of a resistor to allow a variable output. The only thing I would be concerned about is throttle "drift" if the pot gets worn/dirty over time. I still have the schematic somewhere if you want it (just have to find it).

Arct1k 05.08.2008 10:13 AM

Or just buy something like this

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXVK79&P=FR

Maciolus 05.08.2008 10:26 AM

I want more of these fans!

5V x 0.19A = 0.95W

5.5V (MMM BEC) x 0.19A = 1.045W

Normal PC 25mm fans have no more than 0.5W

I'm gonna go with ThermoElectric Cooler/Water Block.

Not sure why you'd want to? Air cooling is much more efficient in this application.

TEC = power hog. TEC's are great if cooling something below ambient improves performance.
Water block needs water, pump, radiator, which will use more power and add a hell of a lot of weight.

BrianG 05.08.2008 11:28 AM

@Arct1k: Yeah, but building it is more fun. Seriously, I wonder how hard it would be to use a rotary encoder instead. In an R/C, a little throttle signal "drift" is acceptable to a degree, but not for personal transport (safety). An encoder style adjustment would be more resistant to wear and value drift.

@Maciolus: You are making the assumption that the CC fan has a higher airflow output because of the higher power. It probably does, but there is a point where faster airflow doesn't help as much as you would think. Just getting any active airflow is a HUGE help, but increasing it by just a few cfm's will provide marginal benefit.

I'm gonna wait until Castle releases the ESC/motor combos, and then remove the fan, add a larger heatsink, and remove the top part of the case to allow better passive airflow through the fins.

Do you have a circuit diagram for this? I seams like a fun thing to do if I was bored sometime:smile:

Thanks

The only trouble with that one is it uses a PIC, which you need to program and upload. A little difficult if you don't have the tools to do this.
