how to solder 6.5 bullets
im trying to solder my 10g wires with the 6.5 bullets. do i fill up the female bullets with solder up to the little holes and then stick the wire into the female?
or does anyone have good ways to do this |
I just rest the wire in the connector then fill it to the side hole

You will want to tin the wire, and the inside of the cup. Then I push the wire into the cup, while keeping the heat on the cup. Make sure all of the solder has heated thru and you should be good.

I find that using one of those mini torches for heating up the bigger connectors works really well. Once it's hot and tinned you just shove the tinned wire in. Usually the connector stays hot for a little longer this way which makes it easy to get the wire in there.

i just got my bullets in and i cant seem to heat them up enough to melt the solder in the cup. 100/140w gun too...

hmm, put the gun's tip into the side hole and keep contact, feed solder right next to the tip where it melts, the solder should transfer heat better and eventually from the connector to the wire

try using the wood burning tips.. that's awesome for soldering big stuff... I always have a nice denim material rag & a wet natural sponge for cleaning...

Make sure your tip is nice and tinned, to get good heat transfer; makes a big difference.

i am using a 140/100w gun and that should be more than enough to do this.
funny thing. i got a new tip and vwalla. worked like a charm. |
Mine is an older Weller. Every so often, I check to make sure the nuts that hold the tip are tight. If they get the least little bit loose, performance goes down. When I notice its not heating like normal, thats the first thing I check and make sur ethey are tight.
My Weller gun is better than 25yrs old and I'm using the 2nd tip. They last a long time if cared for. |
I use a 80w weller iron, the SP80L. It has a HUGE massive tip on it which has lots of thermal mass, great for showing those 6.5mm bullets who's boss. The guns will work, but since the tip has not much thermal mass, they are a bit slower, even though the watts are higher. My iron melts solder in the cup in about 2 seconds or less.
Using a bit of solder on the iron to form a "heat bridge" is essential. With a dry tip, it'll take forever to get the cup hot. Wetting the tip a bit with solder makes a huge difference. Be careful after you've soldered it too, guys. Those bullets retain a lot of heat and can burn the bajeezus out of ya for a long time. |
dont forget the wire, it gets pretty hot too.... thats how i lost a few fingerprints :D

Have an SP80L also - use it for building pacs (or used to with NiMh, using it with a123s now). With the gun I can have bullets or a deans soldered and put away while the SP80L is still cooling. The small gun tip cools off very quickly. I use a Panavise to hold the conns while I work so it can just sit and cool.
I wear the left glove of a pr of mechanics insulated gloves and use that to hold the wire. I can get up to within an inch of the end and its just starting to get warm when I see the joint set. Glove is also useful for heat shrinking - can keep the shrink down where I want it while heating with the heat gun - gets only warm. |
Mini torch had my novak solder on fire in the 6.5s. Liquid silver is just a click away with a torch.

I like to use a mini-torch. It makes installing these big connectors a snap.
