Rustler Vxl Planning

Hey guys, ive decided to get a Traxxas Rustler Vxl, I had an xl-5 rustler and u could run the thing into a brick wall and it would just bounce. So i plan on getting a 3300mah 3s zippy pack for the truck, is there anything i should know about this setup or truck?

If i want to e really daring ill buy a 12L, and run the mm on 5s in it

Jeezemax(sp)- im coming after your record:party::na:

On 3s you will need a bigger pack than 3300. You want at least 100 amps cont, and more would be better. If you are going to gear it up you will be drawing some current.

Must have upgrade...aluminum shock caps or replacing the shocks altogether. I've got a couple of these trucks and love them for their ability to take a beating and laugh at you. A little taste of my VXL bashing:

I wouldnt say the rustler is that rugged, I have crashed into curbs and assoted thing sticking out of the ground at less than WOT and broken front end parts, including RPM castor blocks and front bumper, but I agree with Pimp about using a larger battery, I would nt go less than a 5000 mah, you could go with a Zippy or True RC if on a tight budget

if you have a MM esc I would give that a try, I thought on some other posts you had one

That zippy 5000 pack may be too long for the rusty's battery box?!

HaHa, I said box!

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 06:25 AM

i dont know how long the battery box is, i know my zippy 5 was 160mm long!!!

also looking at a FlightPower 4250mah 3s

dirt101 05.19.2008 06:53 AM

replace the rear shock caps with big bore caps, and get rpm rear bearing cariers. after that its battle ready.

I had to do some dremeling and drilling to get a True RC 5000
4s to fit in the VXL Rustler compartment and have it secured with zip ties.
the TRue RC packs are 145mm long

I ran my VXL Rusty last night FP Evo 3700 3s1p, 10 min of fun w/ three WOT runs geared something around 16/40 mod1. lipo was under 100f, motor 140f. Charged 1500mah back in after run.
I haven't ran the stock 48 pitch for awhile and too lazy to look up the equivalent tooth count, butt 16/40 seams to be on the slower side.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 11:24 AM

How long does it last on a full pack?

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 11:29 AM

Could someone find me the maximum dimesions for the rustler battery box?

BL_RV0 05.19.2008 11:31 AM

Usually what I do for a pack that is too long is I take out the esc plate and cut the small plastic divider out.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 11:32 AM

yah thats wat i did for my xl-5, but i might have to get the expansion kit for the tray

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 11:40 AM

I wish i could get this, but the thing just wont fit! lol

Five-oh-joe 05.19.2008 11:50 AM

It may fit if you dremel the little back wall out of the chassis, and sand down the sidewalls of the battery compartment some. I usually remove that back wall on my Rustler chassis anyways.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 12:06 PM

160 is really pushing it though

bruce750i 05.19.2008 12:23 PM

like 20 min solid never have done it.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 12:31 PM

what?

A 7 cell NiMH flat pack is about 155-160mm long (generally right in the middle, at approx. 157mm), and I have fit those in a Rustler chassis with the back wall dremeled out no problem (still had a few mm to spare too!).

Just throwing that out there as an option.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 12:45 PM

ohh ok, i didnt understand what u were sayin

dirt101 05.19.2008 03:39 PM

on mine I actually dremeled out the front wall. it was for my true rc 6400s which are just slightly to long. Now they fit in perfect up against the servo mount. I havent had any problems with chassis flex pushing on the battery as I have a couple MM's in there. just an idea if you end up with a pack just slightly to long.

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 03:41 PM

hmm great idea dirt, sorry about the BIke

Arct1k 05.19.2008 04:12 PM

That was going to be my suggestion, after my bank balance recovers from my BL XB8 build I plan to get a rusty with an FLM chassis so I can cram 6s into it:intello:

Anything will fit with a hacksaw/grinder:wink: (or a dremel for you fancy people:whistle:)

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 04:34 PM

I run the same gearing in mine and it has done a good job in keeping the wheelies in check

brushlessboy16 05.19.2008 08:31 PM

but wheeles are fun... lol

dirt101 05.20.2008 06:46 AM

that is is if you have a nice wheely bar. I cant find one strong enough for me. Traxxas ones last a couple of days, and the swami last until I take it to my 1/8th track down the road(theres a HUGE quad I go for everytime. p.s. it takes 3s to clear, 2s comes up a couple of feet short). Now I take the swami bar off when I go to the track.

brushlessboy16 05.20.2008 06:52 AM

nice, i made a custom carbon fiber wheelie bar for my xl-5

brushlessboy16 05.20.2008 10:35 AM

Well i should be getting my money on friday night, my dad and I have to ride up to Plymouth meeting Pa to drop my bike off and get the money. so im getting 725 for the bike, then i owe my dad 350...so im getting 375 or so...

brushlessboy16 05.23.2008 07:40 AM

Is there any advantage to running 32p gears over 48

IMO .....Yes, the gears are bigger there is less of a chance of the gears to strip, and Mod 1 for the same reason

dirt101 05.23.2008 03:31 PM

I run 32P gears becuase the mesh is alot easier to set and with 48p little pieces of dirt find there way to get stuck in the gears which ends up causing some typer of problem.

I'm running 12/54 right now. Its alot lower than what most people run but my VXL doesnt run as cool as others do.
