Used / (new) to me XB8TQ XRAY.
Look wait the mail man brought me today! I scored this rebuild / E conversion off E-Bay for a $250.00 (I think It’s worth it?!) We’ll see find out. I did come with loads of extra parts (small ones that will kill you if you don’t have them, kind of parts). It was purchased in 5/23/07 so it just over a year old this thing sold for $589.99, so I paid just over 40 cents on the dollar. I'm Feeling pretty good about that..:yipi:
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2951.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2954.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2965.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2966.jpg Look what I when out and bought myself today! (I'm feeling pretty good abut these too).. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2958.jpg Dammm I hate the smell of Nitro so its a dissembling I go!.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2967.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2968.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2969.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2970.jpg |
So what plans do you have for this?
|
Ok, well after a soak in part cleaner (figuratively speaking) here is the parts look like at this point.. Not to bad at this point,
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2971.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2972.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2974.jpg Next I need to strip it all the way down and change the oil in the front and rear diffs to 5,000 and use 30,000 in the centers. I already ordered the complete set of front and rear shocks off the 808 for this buggy (should have them next week).. I’ll also need to check the and probably replace the bearings as well.. I'm also thinking of striping off all of this aftermarket XRay anodized parts to just shinny alum??. Something to try in the days to come. I’ve had great success with striping off Traxxas anodized off but I’ve never attempted any Huddy / Xray related! Have you??.. If you have any recommendation that I need to perform during it’s transformation from a Nitro burring, gas spewing, ozone depleting, garage smelling bad boy!. Into the environmentally friendly, local park driving, neighbor liking, track worthy (E) buggy.. Please feel free to shoot them my way!.. Well that all I’ve got for tonight, Thanks for looking and have a great one team.. P.S. I'm thinking I’ll be using the following for its E-conversion  1. RCM battery tray 2. A 5mm 17t pinion gear 3. A Neu 1512 2d S 4. Some sort of 4s Lipo 25 -30c / I need something that fits in a 48mm x 144mm x 50mm (any suggestions??).. 5. I pre-paid Mike for a MMM months ago (one the sort list but missed the first shipment) I'm hopping to get mine on the second run?? (if there is ever going to be future shipments?).. if not I’ll just another MGM. |

This is going to be my backup racer to my 808 / my sons practice car.. I would love to stick a Neu 1509 in it, a (1509 1.5 ys) that can handle 4s but nobody is running the 1509 everybody is running the 1512 (something).. I don’t know for now it a new toy to strip it apart and rebuild it..:lol: Have a great one.. |
same motor ive ordered :) cant wait to see it done.
|
Wow!!!
Hey TDC another project already? Man you have really got the R/C bug now. Looking at and reading yoru posts now it looks like you have been at this conversion stuff for years. I do think it is great that you are begining to get your son involved with things. I cannot wait to get my two boys involved, and my daughter if she is interested. They are 9, 11, & 12 though. How old is your son Shaun? Anyway Your threads are always a treat because of the educational benefits that you provide as you learn how these things go together and what parts are required for an E-conversion. Nice find on the new toy. So how is the wife being about your new induldgence in the R/C hobby? I hope she remains cool calm and colective and lets you do y our thing. We have seen too many of these adventures end up with big blow outs and guys selling their toys to please the wife. Good luck with everything buddy.

Good morning Jerry!.. thanks for the above vote of confidence I’ve got some of the best gentlemen behind me kindly taking the time out of there day to answer and all questions proposed, so I’ve token advantage of the knowledge and just apply it my builds. I've had this dam addiction for a while now and since I just sold my G3.0 I had some extra I needed to fill. LOL lol.. I'm hoping it will slowly start to interest my kids more than just driving and breaking dads toys, well see… It was a great deal the kind you cant pass up and it something new to build.. Hhheeee heeee.. Thanks again for your comments and I hope you move went smooth??. Shaun. |
Good morning gentlemen,
Here are some shots of forward progress that I was able to make this past week, Completely disassembling the front and rear ends http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2982.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2983.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2985.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2986.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2988.jpg Starting the De-anodizeation process for all of the Almu parts. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2993.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2996.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2998.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3004.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3006.jpg |
Halfway through the process,
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3007.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3008.jpg Completed the transformation from a mild manner (blue and chrome) to polished All of the anodized off and it been polished to high gloss finish. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3022.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3025.jpg Front assemble going back together rather easy and without any issues so far.. Got to love the XRay.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3028.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3032.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3034.jpg |
Time to work on the diffs I'm removing all of the old fluid and installing 7000 in the front, 30,000 in the center and 5,000 in the rear. Plus I’l be checking the bearings, seals and wear for possible required replacement.. Good news everything is good..
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3030.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3031.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3036.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3035.jpg Time to install the front end and center drive http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3038.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3040.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3041.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3042.jpg That's all for now.. Thanks for your time and have a great day team!.. |
Nice work so far!
|
Busy Bee.
It looks as if you have been a bit busy today. So how exactly will you be mounting your motor on that center diff? What motor and setup will you be going with this time? Your getting pretty good at this now.
|
808 shocks dont bolt on a tq. i think you need the adapter thingy that comes on a losi rear arm package. look on xray forum for the exact part. at first i thought you were crazy to remove the traditional xray black but man it looks awesome.

Have a great one.. Quote:
Hay Jerry… I’ll be weighting for Mike to complete his latest round of XRay mounts and using them, I'm undecided on the motor and lipos requirements at this point, I wait a while read other peoples threads and learn from them before I chose my combo. Thanks for the vote of confidence and the kinds words.. Have a great one Jerry.. Quote:
Actually the front shocks should bolt right on without and mods, the rear shocks will require that I install the rear shock shaft off of the Lossi shocks. I also picked up the front and rear suspension parts off ebay so I might convert this into a 808 we’ll see what happens along the path of completion. Yes I know I was extremely hesitant on removing the Ray colors at first but after about 5hrs of cleaning and polishing I think it was worth it, I’ve never seen a fully polished XRay so thought (what the hell).. Thanks for your comments and have a great day.. |
Good choice on diff oils .
Another buggy already?!? I just sold off my Hyper 8 Pro to a guy I work with, since I'm saving up to buy my own real car. Those de-anodized parts do look pretty good - I too was thinking "why on earth would he do that?" but they came out nicely. Good job! |
Quote:
Yes another buggy (I’ve got the fever! Dam it!!) I sold off my G3.0 and needed something to fill void. Good luck on the car purchase they aren’t getting any cheaper!.. Well you got a buggy and sold one so your even but you upgraded, so your ahead of the game.. That’s cool.. Yea have little faith in the old farts.. HHhhaaaaa  I had my doubts at first too but I think it turned out smooooth..:great::lol::lol: Thanks for your time and have a great one and thanks for kind comments.. Shaun.. |
Forward Progress..
Well forward progress is coming easy now, everything is actually cleaning up nice and going back together without any issues at all.. (That’s just weird??).
So here we have the rear end being installed. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3043.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3044.jpg Next was the installation of the side guards and the shocks, (which were completely rebuilt, tonight) and I discovered that they are big bores.. (yes!).. It’s starting to look like buggy again… Don’t get me wrong I’m replacing these shocks with 808 as soon as I receive them, but for now they will do just fine.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3045.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3046.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3047.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3048.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3049.jpg |
Next came the installation of the rear wing and rims and tires.
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3051.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3052.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3053.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3054.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3055.jpg I’ve still have a long way to go, I need to chose a Neu and find a good used MGM and build a mount for it elevateing it above the rear drive shaft, buy some 4s 5000mAH lipo’s e, find a motor mount, install the battery box, install the antenna and receiver box, get my body back form the painters, etc. etc. etc.. but at least it’s now at the proper roller state.. Have a great one gentlemen and thanks for your time.. |
I really like the look of your car...... its missing the big bore shock though..... but like you wrote, they are on the way..... maybe you shold get a Neu 1512 2d/s and polish it so it also will be shiny. Should be pretty "bling" !

Shaun, what do you think of this for a motor mount (except it won't be black)? Basically, I took my motor mount, and tweaked it to fit the XB8.
BTW, I adjusted your rear droop screws for you . |
Quote:
thanks for adjusting the droop  for me.. Have a great one and let me know when you want to hit the track in HB.. Shaun. |

Well some parts came in :yipi: and I received the 808 front shocks, I should have the rears tomorrow and I got a 1512 2d and some 4s 4500 for it and my MGM 12012 should be arriving tomorrow as well, so I'm looking good so for. I'm still contemplating on your idea of making it shiny!, I've never seen one yet (hmmmm???) TBD.. Thanks for the compliment it's turning out better than I expected. Have a great one.. Shaun. |
when did you order your motor, and from where? i ordered from castle with express international shipping, and its been a while... just wanting a eta, which they cannot provide! also, IT LOOKS AWESOME. it will be better than mine thats for sure... love the silver!
***** out of 5 :) |
Fun
Hey Shaun. Now your just having way too much fun on these projects:party:, and you sure are getting your shipments pretty fast:yes:. Where did you get the MGM this time:whistle:? Are you going to have to send it in for a software/firmware update:oh:? Nice build AGAIN.
We will be packing out our stuff on Monday, so I am sure going to miss my stuff for a little while:tongue:. I just received a bunch of stuff so I can get to work on setting up and finalizing my projects:eyes:. I still need a couple of motors yet. I will probably order some Neu's while we are on our traveling vacation around the world:intello:, so they will be waiting for me when we get to Seoul:yes:. We should be all moved into Korea by the end of August:yipi:. Nice XB8 Buggy project. |
:gasp::gasp::gasp:
Nice build Shaun!!! (again ) The de-ano looks sweet, i bet thats the only XB8 to have some BLING:intello: on it!! I don't belive how fast you're churning out these top notch rigs, you've built 4 in the time i've built 2/3rds  any plans to build an SM soon  keep it up jordan |

Hay Tc3_racer what’s happen!!.. I ordered the motor on Tuesday 10th and received it Thursday the 12th :yipi:. When Mike is out of parts I go to Impact RC http://www.impaktrc.com/index.php?cP...0e44341af7ef3f , they are GREAT!! I've been using them for years and I've never had a problem with them yet.. Give them a try some time.. Thanks for the compliment I’m rather liking the silver too.. Your build is coming along nice!!.. I wish you luck in dealing with Neu (I’ve heard horror stories). |

Thanks Jerry.. I am having way too much fun, luckily things are just starting to flow right, although I did check my toy account today and I'm severely down in funds (BBbboooooo) apparently I’ve spent more money than I thought I did (Dooooo) Now I need to replenish with enough money to keep me going through summer months. (This always hurts!).. Yeah I’ve got some great small shops I’ve discovered in the deepest darkest depth of the internet, so far these finds have been paying off. The controller was a find! I didn’t even know MGM made a 120amp controller sure I'm limited to 4s but I wont be running over that on my buggy so it works out and the price is “butt cheep”, here is the link (scroll down to the center of the page) http://www.icare-rc.com/motor_contro...hless.htm#MGM2 I ordered it Thursday the 12th and I'm scheduled to receive it tomorrow and with any luck I’ll have the rest of the items in by the end of the week. (Radio, painted body, RCM parts & MetalMan completing my motor & ESC mount), there is a slim posablity that she’ll see dirt on Sunday?? Best of luck in the move, that’s going to be stressful!! Safe traveling for your family and get back on line when your settled in. I would love to see some of the “J” projects looking forward to it!.. Neu is the only way for you to go, so it will just come down to your lipo’s & gearing selections before your arrive at your motor choice (work backwards to achieve forward progress).. Thanks for the kind words and be safe!.. Shaun. |
Quote:
Good evening Jordan, Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I am getting pretty good at De-ano things (all started with my GM GR3)… That’s actually the reason I did it Jordan, I’ve never seen another blinged XRay before and I just wanted to be the first (couldn’t let you beat me too it!).. Please… Your building one of the badest, fastest, most expensive builds going in the forum, you’re working at your own pace and enjoying the ride (so to speek!). If anything it just means I'm drinking more than you.. Thank you for your time and have a great day.. p.s. Any luck obtaining your 1527 from Neu yet?? |
yea shaun your de-ano work is sweet! and good find on that esc, what was it 189! thats a steal!
|
It was, 199 shipped.. :party::party:
Thanks  Have a great week.. |
Quote:
 |
hmm... cant believe i didnt see all those motors... o well, i just hope i can get my motor before my esc, just so im not waiting for that... but that will be a while yet!!
hopefully mine will be done in august, (which seems reasonable given the replacement of a part in the MMM... + shipping and sorting out the little issues, and getting some more money!!! gah! cant wait to see a video, so i can have something to compare mine to. what gearing are you running? and what speed are you hoping to reach? thanks, ryan :) |
Forward progress continues!.
MetalMan has finished up the motor & ESC mount and I'm now have a wild hair up my a$$ to convert this XB8 into an 808, so lets see what does and what does not transfer over. 808 parts that Do fit! • The front and Rear shocks • The front and rear shock towers • The front and rear turn buckles • Rear lower A-arms • Rear caster blocks 808 parts that Don’t fit!. (Sure mods are possible, but weren’t considered) • Front A-arms • Front caster blocks • Front steering setup http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3080.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3082.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_3093-1.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...IMG_3096-1.jpg Here’s some work I did that killed me!, I took my new alum aftermarket front and rear shock towers for my 808, striped them and polished them up, I’ve got to stick with the “Bling” theme. I was actually contemplating striping down the shocks and polishing them up, but that’s just taking things too far at this point. That should happen once I’ve purchased a proper motor (1512 2.5 Ds) then I’ll probably and strip them both down & polish them all up @ once!. Achieving the ultimate Bling.. HHHhhaaaa hhaaaa.. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3087.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3089.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3097.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3098.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3100.jpg So here is a shoot of all original parts removed, these will be saved in a plastic bag for possible use in the future. I wish I had a scale!, all of these parts I'm guessing equal well over a pound. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3113.jpg |
So here we have the buggy coming together, we are now installing the MGM and (per MetalMan recommendation) I did not purchase a JR servo, I got a Hitec HS-5955TG
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3101.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3102.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3103.jpg Now we are in the home stretch, I'm completed the installation of the battery tray & battery strap, installed the RX & antenna and have buttoned up all of the wiring. Hay its starting to look like a buggy now (finally).. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3104.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3105.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3106.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3107.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3108.jpg |
And here we have the completed product (although un tested at this point) side by side with a 808 for a final comparison, I think it when it all said and done, the conversion was a success, I was able to remove some extremely heavy stock pieces and install lighter, stronger and more responsive parts in there place.
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3109.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3111.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_3112.jpg The best part of this is now I can actually test the following: • Suspension adjustments (camber, toe, droop, etc), • Motors / everything from a 1509 1.5y to 1515 3D) temps and time.. • Gearing / Spur gears rage from 41 – 46 T, pinion range from 11 – 20 T • Shock & diff oils, (20 – 50 / 2k – 6k) • Proper center of gravity / weight distribution (front / rear and left / right) etc on extremely similar buggies in weight and (e) supply. I'm running both on MGM so that a given (there I can test for free wheeling, braking, timing, etc) plus they are both using a Polly Quest 4s 30C 4500mAH for their power requirements. Thank you for your time and your comments. Have a fabulous day.. |
Sweet!!!
Nice work as usual Shaun. Now I am jealous. I still have not finished up my Maxx projects and you have moved on from your G3R to complete two Xray projects already. Your a fast moving R/C building machine now. Nice looking Xray rig and another R/C vehicle to have fun with. You are a lucky man.
It is Sunday night here in Brussels, and tomorrow is our last day in country. We fly to DC on Tuesday to begin our travels around the world. We are spending the 4th of July weekend in DC to see the fireworks, then a week in Vegas, two weeks in Cali, one week in Honalulu Hawaii, and finally Seoul, Korea on 08/August. Once we get into our house and the shipment arrives I will be able to finish up two of my Maxx trucks and start doing some bashing with the boys. I received over $1K in parts this week to complete my work. Have a great fourth or July guys. |
Looks good ! How's the ESC mount with the standoff in place? Just keep in mind I am totally willing to re-do the ESC mount and make it better, if this one doesn't hold up as well as your 808's mount does.
Also, any first impressions on the 5955-TG? |
My buggy first outing!.
Well I found a new construction site Sunday morning where they are performing the initial site work and I decided to take out my Gevo & my X-Ray and beat the hell out of them on the fresh soil. It started out like every other bash day, good weather, no crowds and open area to myself..
Since I just finished up completing my XB8 buggy conversion and thought I would try it out first. Well it rolled all of 3’ feet and started to smoke!?? (FIRE) What the hell??...:surprised: It turns out that my new MGM 12012 controller couldn’t handle 4s and it went up in smoke!..:grrrrrr: Now I know how the MMM team feels… It freaked me out for a few seconds, I didn’t have the body on it (luckily) and then I saw it smoke so I knew (shooot) I'm screwed!, but then it started to catch fire!, my Lipos!... I just started to through dirt on my new clean shinny buggy!.. (it killed me!) but I wanted to save my 4s before they went up in smoke and blowup my buggy. I packed up my new (burned up) controller is shot it off to MGM today; with any luck I should have it back in about a month. As for the condition of the buggy!, well all other components seam ok (??) and it really, really needs to be cleaned.. (tonight’s project). Uuuggg.. MetalMan, No real input on the servo at this time. sorry!.. Jerry!.. You made it safe and sound!?!.. Excellent Sir. I'll pm you to find out the details of your latest adventure.. |
DAMN man, that sucks. at least a MMM is cheaper to replace and better customer support. hope you get it up and running soon... i STILL havent recieved my motor.
|
what battery tray did u use
