I've been Slashed!

I picked up a pair of Slashes yesterday...thought I'd share a couple of pics with y'all. Check out the size comparison to my CRT in the first couple of pics...these things are pretty big.

SO.... How do they run? They do look pretty big. What do they weigh compared to say a rustler or stampede?

And what brushless system are you going to put in them.

Matthew_Armeni 06.06.2008 01:16 AM

They run pretty slow stock. I already put a Hyperion 5350 4s pack in it, with a Medusa 2200kv 50mm motor. Put in a 40T Revo gear and a 11T MOD1 pinion. MM and CC BEC. I will have pics up tomorrow. These things are so fun to run, I really hope a class starts for them!

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.06.2008 01:24 AM

Lucky you, would of been nice if The Losi Desert Body looked like that and covered the wheels

rootar 06.06.2008 08:56 AM

someone definetly needs to make an entended chassis 1/8 brushless buggy setup and then use the slash body, other poeple with salsh would be saying what the hell... that thing is 4wd and FAST lol, just an idea.....

That's sorta what Robitronic has done already:

sikeston34m 06.06.2008 09:48 AM

That's a couple of really good looking trucks you got there.

I've been really curious about them myself.

Please keep us posted on your results.

skellyo 06.06.2008 10:05 AM

Also, here is a video that was posted by a guy on rccrawler.com. They've had theirs for a week now and took some video of them on a track:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yNKbhUVFd4k

lincpimp 06.06.2008 10:49 AM

Too cool, looks like those truck run well on the track. I am guessing that they were using the stock gear for those runs.

I would like to get one, and run 3s a123 in it, any ideas if the stock esc could handle that? It is rated for 8.4v (7 cell nimh) and the a123s will drop voltage a bit.

At the end of the video I linked, the black truck was running a 3S A123 pack in it on the stock electronics.

Matthew_Armeni 06.06.2008 11:25 AM

I've already ran the stock ESC on 3s lipo with the stock motor, it ran fine, no problems. It says it can do 8 cell NIMH so 3s A123 should be no problem.

Wow! That is what the Slash should have been!

Come on now Brian...that thing has a stinky fume spitter in it. Besides, at $450, it won't sell nearly as well the $200 Slash.

BrianG 06.06.2008 12:49 PM

OK, minus the stinky bits, but I automatically look beyond that now to the potential underneath. Actually, it just looks like a b/truggy with a different body. And a few other features, but the layout is the same.

That's true about the price, but I would've really liked a 4wd Slash.

I'm gonna check out how popular these are gonna be at the LHS. If there is enough to create a class, it might be my next purchase just so I can be in a stock class for once. Sucks being a lousy driver yet forced into a mod class where all the better drivers are.

Skellyo, how wide are the tires on the Slash? Aluminum beadlocks would be coool....

Not very wide at all. I'd guess somewhere in the 1.5" range. I think the big problem with beadlocks is going to be getting the proper offsets since the front and rear have different offsets like the Rustler/Stampede.

rschoi_75 06.06.2008 01:03 PM

wow... I can't believe they are that big! At first glance, I thought your full size CRT was a crt.5... Looking good Sean.

I guess I could have also mentioned that, for reference, those are 16" square tiles on my floor.

Robert 06.06.2008 02:41 PM

I'm pacing back and forth waiting for Santa in the borwn truck. I heard rumor he's comming today with mine. :yipi:

lincpimp 06.06.2008 02:46 PM

How tall are the tires Sean? Also, what gearing does it come with stock? I would most likely convert it to 32p, but would like to know the stock ratio.

skellyo 06.06.2008 02:51 PM

Without having the tires in front of me, I have read they are 4.3" tall. The stock gearing according to the parts list is 19:86.

Arct1k 06.06.2008 02:56 PM

It would be nice if someone starts doing a cheap body for them - Would be interesting for a rally conversion for a buggy.

The gtp bodies cost a fortune!

Thanks! I still can't belive that Matthew ran his on 3s lipo!. I know that the motors are good for it, but I figured that the esc would smoke! I may give it a try with 3s on slightly lower gearing and see how it does. My current xl5/titan12t combo is in my tamiya high lift, which I usually run on 2s lipo. I guess we will see how 3s treats it!

TexasSP 06.06.2008 03:26 PM

Maybe the 12t titan just wants more voltage. I never really tried with mine but I suppose it's a possibility.

junkman 06.06.2008 04:19 PM

I got mine today, pulled the the esc and motor out of the vxl pede, swapped it into the slash, this Is definitely the funest truck I have had in a while. Handles the 3s & vxl so much better than the stampede, and big enough to run through grass no problem at all. I love it!

Well I figured the ESC would be fine because Traxxas says you can use an 8 cell NiMh which is close to a 3s, and the stock gearing felt pretty low. It held up fine, not as fast as whats in there now but plenty for a track.

So, I repeaked my 4s pack (it was less than half charged when I ran it yesterday), took the Slash back out and wow, it's insane! Wheelies no problem, going half throttle then flooring it caused it to pitch sideways and lean hard to one side, at quarter throttle then nailing it it would sometimes wheelie if the traction was there. Drove around hard for about 7min, MM was 150, Medusa 2200 was 150, and the battery was 95. Went back out with the 3s 8000 MaxAmps pack and it was still plenty powerful but a lot more controllable. I think this will be my new setup, it ran cooler as well. Hopefully pics up by tonight.
Oh, and a tip, the VXL mounting plate traxxas makes, PN: TRA3725, lines up perfect with the chassis holes, and it leaves tons of space underneath to hide the BEC.

rootar 06.06.2008 11:00 PM

i forgot all about the robotronic 4wd, i remember seeing that in some mag.

whats the wheelbase on that slash? the wheel base on my GS is inbetween a truggy and a buggy at 13.7 inches isnt the slashes wheel base around this, maybe i could grab a set of buggy tires to put on these advantage buggy wheels i have laying around and pick up a slash body and see how it looks?

Matthew_Armeni 06.07.2008 06:40 PM

So here's some pics, not the best quality but at least you can see what I did.

Looks like a great buy for the initial investment.. Keep us updated on the strength and durability..

Nice buy..

BL_RV0 06.08.2008 02:21 PM

It must be cool to see a prerunner truck doing a wheelie.

A video I put together from bashing this weekend:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eJl0ZW0qd0

lincpimp 06.08.2008 11:14 PM

Looks like fun! I think mine may get the aveox,mm setup out of my vxl pede (wonder where that pede came from...)

skellyo 06.08.2008 11:18 PM

I wouldn't go too hot on the setup. Mine should be running around 33mph the way they're setup and anything more than that would pretty much keep you on your lid. It's got a pretty high CG and we did our fair share of barrel rolls just trying to make turns with them.

jnev 06.08.2008 11:26 PM

Nice video! How do you like it compared to an ordinary Rustler? I have got a spare motor, so I am sort of on the lookout for another rc to put it in...

skellyo 06.08.2008 11:27 PM

I think I'll actually drive this more than my Rustler. I'm actually thinking about selling one of my VXL Rustlers now that I have a pair of these.

jnev 06.09.2008 12:09 AM

How does the Rustler and Slash compare when driven on sand? I can only assume that the Rustler would be better because of the wider tires.... Send me a PM about how much you want for your VXL Rustler.

rchippie 06.09.2008 12:12 AM

Sean are they as fast as they look ?.

skellyo 06.09.2008 12:14 AM

The Rustler does a little better job staying straight in the loose stuff. And I think you're right, it's the wider tires.

About 33mph or so. I didn't GPS them, but probably will next time I take them out.
