Losi 8t conversion finished

I finished my Losi 8t ! thanks to all your posts I pretty much found everything I needed to know without bothering you all lol. Since I got the build info from here I wont bore you with too many details-Just want to say thanks to you all and Mike for the goods and how to's - Losi 8T , 10k-30-7k diffs, 48spur/17pinion, 1515/1y, (smoked monster victim) MM/bec/fan 2700uf 25v caps on the way, 2x 2s Neu 30c 5k, Rc-monster mount, rc designs tray/esc mount, King Headz aluminum (i know) hitech 985mg, lpr bowties on rulux half-ups (1/2" offset) and my lady bought me that Lid from ebay thanks babe ! Just a trip to the hardware store for some mesh for the fan and zips for the esc then get some dirt on it, I think im good. 10 minutes driving after getting it all setup went well, - no smoke, didnt crash, low heat.. Any input, suggestions, things i missed/should improve, criticism, no0b bashing, cretin jokes- are all welcome !

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.13.2008 10:43 PM

Looks great and nice find on the body

bdebde 06.13.2008 10:56 PM

Boy that sure looks nice! I may have to break down and get me one.

skellyo 06.13.2008 11:01 PM

Love those Rulux wheels! That will definitely be what goes on my CRT next. Did you just dye them with some black RIT?

electric 06.13.2008 11:14 PM

where did you get the aluminum center diff casing and graphite servo tray.
sweet car, getting ready to build one to.
thanks
Terry

lincpimp 06.13.2008 11:18 PM

Nice looking truck, amazing that a cretinous noob like yourself got that together!

Seriously, that truck does look good. Should have plenty of power with the neu 5k lipos. Not sure about the yellow on the split loom, but your wiring is very tidy! .

Just a tip on the fan you are running. If you can get it turned at a slight angle, you may be able to bolt it on thru diagonal holes, instead of the bolt being next to each other, and the other side unsupported. The fans like to be help tight ad not flex, I have had issues with that. Otherwise your build looks great. I look forward to hearing about how much fun you have with it!

Fkyx 06.13.2008 11:27 PM

Nice conversion! That body really is awesome.

Center diff casing is by GH hobby got it fom their website, lets just say I wont be buying anything from them again and they wouldnt take my order if I did lol, the servo tray is from impakt i think its for the buggy as it doesnt quite fit right but it makes it alot stiffer which is what counts

Yees I am lucky i didnt electrocute myelf or lose a finger with the dremel, but with all the wisdom here I escaped unscathed except a blister on my search finger ! It was yellow or purple split loom lol, i have 20 ft of each in my garage from car stereo installs and should really get something else ! Ill redo the fan it is kind of hanging off , i have a 25mm novak fan but it looked like it blocked too much of the heat sink.

jnev 06.13.2008 11:42 PM

Awesome conversion man!! Really well done. Let us know how tough it is once you run it.

lincpimp 06.13.2008 11:46 PM

If you have the 25mm novak fan, make some spacers to place it about 1/4-3/8 inch over the heatsink. The fans are more effective with an air gap.

Gotcha that one will fit better, ill find some spacers in my grandpa like collection of babyfood jars full of stuff

Tobbe 06.14.2008 09:19 AM

Looking good! I love it:smile:. It looks like you're using a plastic spurgear am I right? Is it a Kyosho one and does it fit without any modifications?

lutach 06.14.2008 11:25 AM

Nice looking truck. Some question, why do you have it geared for around 50mph? How hot does your ESC, motor and batteries get? How often do you WOT?

Edit: My mistake. I thought I saw 1512/1Y, but I looked again and saw it is the 1515/1Y. Don't mind my post.

jayjay283 06.14.2008 01:21 PM

thats the stock 48 on there. and a 1515 1y 4s for mid -40s. I have the kyosho 46 but I read someone had issues meshing, I have the neu motor spacers and alot of shaft room so I dont see it being an issue ? ill probably try and pop it on next overhaul but its not loud as it is. I had a 5s 30c and the MMM and 46t all ready as plan A, luckily the MMM died because that would have been just retarded. Its really fast as is on 4s/48p, I think 55 mph in a truggy may be a bit overkill, guess ill put that in something else. I do that at dinner too, always overorder.

TDC57 06.16.2008 02:08 AM

Well done!.

Fabulous build!, makes me want a Truggy!.. well done on the build, very clean job JayJay!!

What’s your total weight?, how long with you get on your batteries?, the body is Killer!,

Best looking Truggy I’ve seen..

Great job..

jayjay283 06.16.2008 09:07 PM

Thanks for the compliments Shaun, Im having a blast driving this badboy ! been years since ive driven a vehicle with a center diff and this is my 1st electric with one. It weighs 8.4 lbs without lipos and 9.6lbs with 2x 2s,30c,5ah. Thats on a digi bathroom scale though so give or take. As for the lipos, ive only been running them down part way because they were new, they were using 2336 mah for 12 minute runs (whatever that adds up to) but I was stopping checking temps then wot so nothing accurate yet. Top speed is 43.7, im still messing with my new mx3-fhss controller (so many settings) and the esc settings, but its up from 37.6mph yesterday. Try a few more tweaks tomorrow. Cant wait to see your new buggy cruising !
Jay

these were my temps:
17/48 140º max on CC mamba, 136º max on 1515/1y, 102º max 7.4v 30c Neu 5000mah, Ambient 87 º

Do you all think the lipos are too hot ? if I gear it up 1 pinion tooth you think it will get the motor hotter and esc cooler ? or is it the other way around ?

lucias 06.17.2008 07:17 PM

I like your center diff but I started adding up the parts on the Golden Horizon website and ouch..

what about this one?

Yeah rip off and then the UPS guy wants an unbeknownst fat check ontop of it for some brokerage fee and import tax. I had a fit on them.... anyway, Ive never tried anything from the guy you listed on ebay but $9 is a deal and it cant be worse than GH ! it looks like all the holes have the right lips on them and stuff. I have some stuff from gh I bought extra to get to the discount, pm me if interested. If posting thats inappropriate let me know mods :whip:

lucias 06.18.2008 03:43 PM

Let me know what you have..

jayjay283 06.18.2008 04:25 PM

pm sent

lucias 06.18.2008 06:23 PM

If you use the RC-Monster motor mount does that leave you left over with one Center diff mount? Are they both the same mount?

jayjay283 06.18.2008 06:44 PM

yup just the front, motor mount is integrated into a rear diff mount

jayjay283 06.27.2008 07:21 PM

The brakes are really bad on the 8T-15-1y/MM no matter what the setting I have it at, loud noise that just cant be good for the motor or diffs. I need mechanical brakes ! I know the pros and cons, can always put is back minus a couple holes im going to have to drill. Heres my idea :oh:

old pic but setups the same:
1. use 4 U.E TMaxx Servo mounts 'link' and bite the Tekno brake/steering servo setup
2. Put receiver in the waterproof RX box from my emaxx in the rear behind the battery
4. flip over the esc mount so it faces angled towords the front for a bit more air
5. ordered a brake spacer for the motor from Mike.
should make the wiring alot cleaner keeping most of it in the rear, what do ya think ?

jayjay283 06.28.2008 12:04 PM

I have a quick video (impatient wife) of the weird braking noise, does anyone know whats up with it ?? This is my 1st electric with a center diff but that just doesnt sound right.

bdebde 06.28.2008 01:42 PM

If you mean the sort of hum when it brakes, that sounds normal.

Arct1k 06.28.2008 01:59 PM

Thats normal - Nothing to worry about

jnev 06.28.2008 05:33 PM

Yep, sounds normal to me too. You will get used to the sound. I thought the same thing as you when I started out in conversions...

DRIFT_BUGGY 06.28.2008 06:14 PM

What is making that noise? Mine does the same thing

jayjay283 06.28.2008 07:47 PM

cool cool, thanks for checking it out guys... was a bit unnerving to me, takes off sounding like a turbine then eeeeeerk when it stops. I was gritting my teeth hoping I wasnt ripping the magnets out of the motor or something.
Have a great weekend
Jay

That's normal. I hear that sound from my 1515 1Y everytime I hit the brakes.

By the way, nice build. Now I'm torn between the MBX5T prospec and Losi 8T for my next build :whip::lol:.

fishmasterdan 07.04.2008 10:15 PM

Hows your project coming along? Nice build. I am curious about the brakes with the mamba. You metioned you did not like the brakes. Any reason why you dont like them?

Have you had a chance to ring it out. Any temp reading by chance.

I am thinking about trying a medusa motor but I am not real sure about that yet.

jayjay283 07.06.2008 11:16 AM

I just didnt like the noise it made when braking and I had always thought mechanical brakes would be a bonus when doing a conversion for the adjustability and perhaps locking up the rear while hard braking in the front for fun bashing, not to mention the esc options. I skipped over it because I didnt really see a way for them to fit and I just wanted it running lol. I had my Gual bladder removed over the weekend and all my pieces arrived while in the hospital so I will start putting it together today as I cant do much else. Glad I have/love this hobby !!! Ill put up some pics when its finished.
Jay

edit: Thinking about it now, it was pre-monster and I was scared of using any car escs that were capable of 5s or 6s out due to all the nightmares with each of them, and was going to use a hv boat or heli one but the monster changed that, well did then didnt lol anyway have nothing but time to play so ill try it can always change back

TDC57 07.07.2008 01:15 AM

I dont know (??) I was out driving my builds today all with Neu's and none of them made that sound (?), does it overheat Jay?,

Hospital (??) are you OK ????

Sammus 07.07.2008 02:29 AM

another vote for normal, all mine make that noise.

No it drives perfect, no overheating pure speed and joy just that noise. Drives too well perhaps thats why I had to mess with it lol. I took it all apart, put the brakes on it and hooked the linkage up which took alot of fab work because the center diff is backwards. All I have to do is mount the servos but I hate it already. I think im going to put it back before I put holes in it. Oh well gave me something to do.... Im fine I was out bashing my RCs with the neighbor and it was hot and I was sucking down monster sodas and ate some kung pow chicken from Panda Express lol, thought I had indigestion but the wife dragged me to the hospital because I was yellow. They ended up yanking my gaul/gall ?bladder out of my belly button so now im at home baked on meds weeeee

Thanks man that seems to be the concensus. Im probably just nit picking because it runs so well and hasnt broken like all my other RCs. Im going to leave it and play with the fine adjustments a bit more.

bl-is-future 07.07.2008 03:48 PM

agree my 1y makes that noise when braking. NO heat issues either.

jayjay283 07.09.2008 04:13 PM

well since I scrapped the brake idea I decided to "buff up" the center diff :drunk:..thought id share, I got an aluminum diff cup from nova rc, it seems nice, drove well and perfect fit, see how it wears next lube change LINK. I threw in a RR 47t wide spur and some protek ceramic bearings for the diff LINK good deal considering the stock losi bearings are the same price (though you get 4) :oh:. Lubed it up with some graphite with molybenum. RC monster mount gh alum top brace and alum front brace should be bullet proof now !! Its quiter and brake noise is a bit less, not $45 less

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/k...nter2004-1.jpg

TDC57 07.30.2008 01:46 AM

So where is the Video  it looks way to clean! are you sure your beat on it :intello:..

still, it one sweat ride Sir.. what are your average runtimes (?)

Have a great one Jay..

Shaun.

ffactory666 07.30.2008 04:17 AM

Very nice build .

Probably the nicest truggy build i have seen , not mentioning my X2 build :smile::smile:

What made you decide to ditch the mech brake idea , i din't think you liked the esc braking on the truggy?
