Hyperion 0610i NET and DUO v1.5

Howdy, just thought i'd let you all know that here is a new (highly recommended) firmware update for the NET and DUO chargers.

http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/pc/0610i-firmware.htm

Looks good, adds a STORE charge/discharge mode for li packs, plus a few other things (bad cell detection etc)

tc3_racer_001 06.14.2008 06:30 AM

thanks,
hopefully i should get my charger this week! (if b-p-p dont let me down on shipping, cant afford the $15 for express)

Jeremy1976 06.14.2008 09:39 AM

Thanks man I will have to get the data cable for my Duo.

Sammus 06.14.2008 10:24 AM

yeah theres an extra little link you "need" to buy (easy to make one).

There's computer logging software for the chargers on that website too if you hadn't seen it. Another reason to get the data cable :)

tc3_racer_001 06.14.2008 08:24 PM

ok, so i can build the adapter, but still need to buy the thing the adapter which plugs into the charger?? that seems stupid to me, where is the cheapest place to get what i need to update this. (whether thats buying or making) thanks,
ryan :)

Sammus 06.14.2008 10:44 PM

Yeah I mean you need the link (think like a castle link) but it was originally made for the titan series esc's, and the connection's are different. On the hyperion site I linked to there is a guide with part numbers and how to make the adapter if you dont want to buy it (its only like $2 anyway). I got all my stuff from aircraft-world.com. Super cheap shipping for me in Australia, not sure where is best for you.

tc3_racer_001 06.15.2008 01:59 AM

also in oz, just ordered those things, plus the extra cables and plugs to make up balance connections for my packs (and to charge them at the same time in series)
thanks, $2 shipping... cheaper than in australia. havent even recieved the charger and i can use it without them so figured why waste the extra 10 bucks.

gixxer 06.15.2008 03:47 AM

pretty cool. so it looks like it would cost about $20 between the 2 parts needed. I have 3 hyperion chargers so I will probably pick this up soon.

tc3_racer_001 06.15.2008 06:20 AM

yes, $20 for the cables needed shipped would be pretty close :)

our postage system sucks, they dont deliver at all on the weekend, when u have time to use what you ordered!! o well, least its mostly reliable.

Sammus 06.15.2008 06:54 AM

Just got home and updated the firmware. It's much better now, I had a bad pack (that I shouldn't even try to charge anyway), and with the old firmware the bad cell would shoot up to 4.4V no matter what the state of charge of the whole pack. Now the charger limits the charge current to keep that cell under 4.215V - much better I think :) Now I just have to remove that dodgy cell haha.

Duster_360 06.17.2008 07:33 AM

Besides the required equip - how difficult is this to do? What were you ruuning on your PC, XP?

I get concerned when warned that if this messes up you will be left without a working charger. It does look interesting enough to want the PC capabilities that this lends to the charger, but if its real risky, I'll just keep using mine with the firmware I got it with.

I was thinking the very same thing

Sammus 06.17.2008 08:09 AM

Easy. I run XP SP2. Once you installed the cable driver, hook up the cable (keep the charger power off, ie unplugged from power supply), it installs the drivers automatically. Then look in device manager (right click my computer->properties->hardware) under ports, it has the device name listed and the COM port it uses (in my case COM3).

Then fire up the update application, choose your COM port from a drop down menu, click 'load' or similar (forget what it actually says), choose the firmware file (both firmware hex file and update app is included in the FW download). Dont touch any other settings then (with the charger plugged into your computer), power on the charger, and its all over in about 10s.

This is all outlined in much greater detail in the PDF instruction manual available through the link I provided in the OP.

To use the graphing software its a matter of choosing the com port and clicking the 'connect' button. It keeps graphs and logs (if you want) the voltage of both ports, as well as the voltages of each individual cell, charge current and the cumulative pack capacity. The log file is just a tab delimited file, easily readable in excel or similar. There is also a seperate tab which displays the each real time cell voltages to 3dp.

Download the cable drivers and logging software from here.

Got the firmware upgrade to v1.5 done tonight on my 0610iNet charger and it completed so fast it was almost anticlimatic. There were differences in what I had to do versus the upgrade instructions, but nothing that a little PC savy couldn't figure out and proceed. Slick install, I won't be concerned about doing others in the future to keep charger up to daye.

Also installed the Beta version of the viewer and charged a few batts - cool having the laptop watch the batt charge. I watched the 1st one and just as I was thinking that should be getting close to peaking - it did. I'll burn some amps with some lipos tomorrw so I can watch the cell screen and see what that does.

Def worth the cost of the cable and adapters!!

Sammus 06.27.2008 11:42 PM

There are a couple little glitches with the new firmware and also the logging software, I've been talking to hyperion tech and there should be 1.6 out next week some time, and beta2 of the software is also on its way.

Duster_360 06.28.2008 11:34 AM

Let us know when they have it released, thanks!

Duster_360 07.04.2008 11:31 AM

Just a followup - really pleased the way I caa watch and store charge data on batts using this v1.5 firmware and EOSView with my 0610i - charged a 3S lipo last night and it was neat watching the cells come into balance on EOSView.

One thing I've noticed - the USB port I used to install the PRGUSB software for connecting with the charger will not work with CastleLink software. I was trying to set up a MM and 2 CC Becs from the same USB and was having trouble - CC was telling me it couldn't find a CastleLink device while connected to either MM esc or a CC Bec.

I tried a different set of USB ports (laptop has a set in back and a set on the side - both are USB 2.0 protocol) and CastleLink worked like a champ. If you make this upgrade, you may want to be aware of this. Seems like the PRGUSB adapter installed for the firmware upgrade "takes over" that USB port or alters it in some way.

Jeremy1976 07.04.2008 04:42 PM

Anyone have a picture of the plugs/adapters all plugged into the charger? I am not sure if I got the right stuff. I got like 3 different things here.

tc3_racer_001 07.04.2008 06:35 PM

when i got mine (the adaptor cost $1.95 and the cclink like thingy was 19.95) i havent got the charger yet though :diablo:

tc3_racer_001 07.05.2008 06:48 PM

whats the other servo wire for? a temp sensor? i havent rtecived my charger yet .... stupid bpp... o well, i got a 10% discount :)

Duster_360 07.05.2008 07:20 PM

Yeah, the other wire (red/white) next to it is the temp sensor. I have an Ice charger too and my experience with its temp sensor was disappointing - the temp it reads lags way behind the batt temp and makes it mostly a curiosity and I won't use it.

The Hyperion temp probe is much better, it has much better contact with the batt surface for starters and follows batt temp pretty good.

tc3_racer_001 07.19.2008 07:53 PM

just letting people know 1.6 is out.

Sammus 07.20.2008 03:30 AM

Cheers for the tip. It's a nice update, I got a requested feature in there woo! (can balance without main discharge leads connected).

tc3_racer_001 07.20.2008 06:27 AM

yeah, and u can charge without main leads too, or can you? i thought that was hopeless when i first got mine as i had to make up another adaptor to charge 600mah lipos...

Sammus 07.20.2008 07:23 AM

Naw I don't think they let u charge. I think they should if your charging at like 0.5A or something, maybe next time.

Jeremy1976 07.20.2008 12:02 PM

Guys I am sorry but I have no idea how to update my Hyperion Duo. Is there anyone that can give me detailed instructions on how to do this? I have all the adapter plugs but sat down and tried to figure it out and just could not grasp it. I am running windows xp. I would really really like to update it. Any help? Thanks

Duster_360 07.20.2008 12:27 PM

You need to print this out and read carefully. Its pretty much a step by step instruction on how to connect things and update the firmware. It was written for 1.5, but applies to 1.6 as well.

http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/pc/EOS0610iFIRMUP.pdf

Everything needed (software) can be found on hyperions site - look around forit, its plainly labeled. If you're uncomfortable doing this, ask the place where you bought your 0610i if they will do it for you (how much)? If you got it locally may not be a big deal, but if not, will require sending it in and waiting.

Jeremy1976 07.20.2008 01:03 PM

Where is "device manager" located on the computer? I have the firmware downloaded and then moved it to my desktop. Is moving it to the desktop considered unziping it? Thanks

Duster_360 07.20.2008 01:48 PM

Click start, find 'my computer' in the list on the right. Highlight it, then right click it, then click properties in that list. A new dialog opens - in that click the hardware tab. You will find device manager listed first in that list.

No, moving it to the desktop is not unziping it. You need to run winzip (or something like it) to unzip the file. To check, highlight the file you moved and right click it. In the list that comes up click properties. At the top if it shows type of file as WinZip File, you will need to unzip it.

If you have Winzip installed, dbl click the file on your desktop - that will start the unzip process, tell it to extract file to your desktop.

Jeremy1976 07.20.2008 09:23 PM

Got it updated and thank you for the help. What is the biggest change to this new update? Now that I did it once it will be a piece of cake in the future. Thanks again!

tc3_racer_001 07.20.2008 09:48 PM

yep, the only issue i had was u had to turn the supply on really quickly or it froze.

hailmick 07.22.2008 06:28 AM

hay
im thinking of get the 610inet and want to know if the update hardware is included.

as bishop power products does not state that its included and they do sell it separate!

http://www.b-p-p.com/product.php?pro...&cat=24&page=1

tc3_racer_001 07.22.2008 06:34 AM

its not, but definately worth it. i got version 1.5 loaded into it and that was shipped in april, so i wouldnt be suprised if it already has 1.6 in it! but worth buying all the same.

hailmick 07.22.2008 06:42 AM

thanks for the fast reply

Duster_360 07.22.2008 07:10 PM

ALL e RC advertises theirs are selling new with v1.6 installed. Noticed that last night.

MTBikerTim 07.27.2008 09:45 PM

I just got the update cable from aircraft world. I also ordered a hyperion y22s 6000. This is such a nice motor. I haven't run it yet of course but I can't get over how nicely it's made. The shaft doesn't turn over smoothly like my other motors 20mm motors (I can't remember what this type of motor is called). I like it. I cant wait to see how it goes.

Sammus 07.27.2008 10:00 PM

I'm also looking at getting a yc motor for my mini-t. The thing I'm concerned about is the protruding bearing carrier at the front. I've had a few motors made for air use that also had that little protruding bit and it didnt fit properly because of it. It's not too hard to make up an adaptor for it though. Let me know how it goes.

JThiessen 07.28.2008 11:02 AM

I found the update process rather anti climatic.....they could have at least made it take longer!!
BTW, it worked nicely on my Vista machine (something none of my other items that require updates have had success with).

I have found the Yc motors to be a lot more durable than the Mambas, and that is the short model I would think the long can will be even more so
