MMM fan not acceptable
can i cut a hole in the case and bolt a fan to the heat sink so I can change it without taking the whole thing apart? already broke 2 clips. cant do this every 15 minutes.
my mm has the same fan on it for hours of track time.( for your info) will this void my warentee? |
It will void the warranty according to castle. Really sucks too, I have been running a high quality fan (was used to begin with) for nearly a year on one of my MMs (track use too).
|
ive seen some guys at the track tie it to the side of the esc, and taking the originak out completly, no warranty voiding
|
cause I have these fans i bought that are called magnetic levatation fans? or something like that. they flow like 6 cfm and run at 9000 rpm at 12 volts. i had a fine design motor that waS running 170 after a few minutes and this fan cooled it to 125. plus they never break.( so far) it would fit perfect on the heat sink if the top of the case was acidentlly removed.:-)
you know another serious option is liquid cooling like boats do. a convection set up with no pump. no moving parts, nothing to break. |
sunon also makes a maglev fan that is 30x30x6 which should fit right where the mmm fan is. $25 for one though.
|
I was thinking something more like this:
http://www.artmodding.com/images/coolermaster-jet7.jpg Mount it to the chassis over the heatsink so that it didnt damage the esc in a crash... No, seriously.... |
the fan definitely is a weak spot. i'm on my 4th one now. =/

It looks so cool- imagine having that sticking out the bonnet/hood of an MT, like a giant supercharger you see on hotrods... **dreaming..**

you just replace it yourself. mine quit last week. call them up and they will send you a new one. very easy to replace also. they will tell you how to do it over the phone.
|
I just replaced my 3rd fan. This is getting ridiculous! Is there some secret to keeping the fan intact? Is Castle going to change the design?
|
I ran thru 5 of the CC fans. My case clips are broken from opening and closing so much as well. I cut all of the fins out of the top fan hole and replaced the fan with an Integy 7.4v 30mm fan and its been running for 3 race days now. The stock MMM fan never made it thru 3 qualifiers before it died and I would end up running without a fan by the time it got to the mains.
Yes the CC fan suck. Hopefully they have it fixed allong with the BEB issue for the next release of MMM in a few weeks. |
Integy fan not acceptable
I've used 2 No!vak 25mm fans at 8+volts for no less than 30 hours, holding up fine. They will blow out a candle across a small room, they sound like little turbines too...
I got 2 of the Integy fans cuz they were cheap, thought it would be a good idea to run them closer to rated voltage. EHH! Even running at 8.4 (their max rating) they move like NO air, and they stink like a fried pcb, the little motors are HOT, I'm wondering if they're already over rated at 7.2. Anyway most of you probably know all these things are re-branded. You'll almost always see there is one sticker on top of another, peel the top one off and you'll see the Novaks are Young Lin brand, and the Integys are TOPCAD, with an address, topcad.com.hk- FWIW. Run the Novak 25s at 7-8 volts and they work incredibly well. |
BTW I tried the Integy 7.2's at 12 volts and they STILL didn't move the air like the Novaks on 8V.
|
I am still on my 1st CC fan (no mods done to it at all) after 3 hours of use (track use) It's going great.
|
I tried the Novak 30mm in the MMM. It lasted 1 1/2 days in the MMM. Better than stock, but still not quite durable IMO. I personally dont really care if the fan is moving air or not. As long as it preserves the warantee. The MM doesnt overheat in a 20 minute main with no fan running. As long as there is a fan running on it if the MMM dies its still under warantee and the fewer times I have to open the case the better IMO.

plugged into the Rx
|
I don't get it - I've been beating the crap outta two MMMs and haven't had a single fan problem (or other problems for that matter, luckily).
|
No fan issues here either- stuffed mine full off grass, landed on my lid several times, and popped the esc case open 3 or 4 times too; fans still runs fine.
I got lucky... :mdr: |
I have 3 30mm fans on order from Tower I am planning on using zipties to secure the fan to the top of the MMM if anybody has a better method chime in.......
|
is the novak 25mm a direct drop in? how do you guys have it plugged in...did you guys just take the plug from the ccfan and solder it onto the novak? i have never installed a fan besides the cc one. can you explain the wiring or pics would be great. the novak upgrades definitely sounds like something i wanna do, but i just dont wanna short anythi8ng out in the process. and how do you guys have the option to choose whether or not to use 7 or 8 volts??
|
The novak fan is a drop in replacment (except the wiring) but it will hit the fan cover & break as well. I found 4 small washers that fit inside the novak fan mounting holes. I put 1 in each hole (on the fans topside). Then put the fan inside the MMM fan cover. The washers space the fan father away from the cover keeping the blades from catching on the fan cover slots. As for the wire, I used the connector & wire that comes on the fan. Just run the wires out the side of the fan cover & plug into the RX in an unused slot.
|
ahhh thanks for the washer tip. but i didnt know all i had to do was plug it into my reciever slot? i always hear of people slicing their wires and running it though...?? thats where i always get confused. if i knew i can just plug it into my reciever..thats not hard at all haha. so how do i make it to 8 volts? how did you wire the fan wires out of the mmm casing?
|
There are plenty of places to poke the Novak fans connector/wire thru the MMM top cover, you don't need to cut or drill any thing. You cannot make it 8 volts if you do it the way I did it. Some guys are using the balance plug on the battery to get higher voltage but I don't like to intentionally un-balance my batteries.
|
You may need to buy a extension as the wire on the novak fan isn't very long. When you take the case off you will be able to work out how to mount the wire out the case to the RX. If you don't have a extra slot you could also look at a y-harness.
|
I have no exp with the MMM, had 2 on order but cancelled when all the trouble started brewing. I run 2S+2S so it's as simple as running the fan off one pack, if you're using 3S and up then it's not so easy. The Novak 25's do push pretty good air at 5 or 6V, if you're running an adjustable bec then set it at 6V. I was actually using my two 25's for pack cooling back when I was running Nimhs, at over 3 inches away, which is why I needed the boost. No more of that nonsense, lipos don't need it. So I'd say 5 or 6V is fine if it's right on top of the ESC... as for mounting, can't help ya there.
|
ok sounds easy enough. im using a 2 channel reciever and the only available slot is a b/dsc? will that work? can anyone verify that i will or will not need a extension for the novak fan to the reciever. if any of you guys have a 3905 emaxx with the novak fan, i have the reciever and esc are their factory places. it looks like the novak fan wire has to be about 9-10 inches to reach my reciever.

It comes with a plug that will plug right into the Rx. Just plug it into an open slot on the Rx and it will power the fan. I just ran the fan wores out of the MMM through a cooling slot. Simple. |
Crap. I forgot about the washers. My Novak fan just died after one pack. Looks like the fan was pressing against the case and fried it. I'm reeeeeeeeeally starting to get sick of this fan BS. I'm putting in one more Novak fan and if it fails I'm cutting the case. The fans don't seem to be the problem....it's the case.
Here's some pics of the Novak fan so you guys can see how simple it really is. :na: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...e/DSCF3326.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...e/DSCF3321.jpg |
what the heck. you guys werent kidding when you said the wires were short lol. i will def. need to be buying a extension. im hoping even with a extension, it would be long enough. thanks for the picture. it looks like the novak fan plug has only two prongs. do i just match up red to red and white to white and leave the third one empty? what plug is that? i need an extension that goes from that novak plug to one for a airtronics reciever.
is that the 25 or the 30mm novak? and how will the washers stay put? woulnt it just slide around and fall into the fan blades? |
25mm fan, the plug is designed to plug into the aux port of the novak escs. The fans have recesses for screws when they are bolted down, or in this case there are little stubs inside the top half of the MMM case, which the recesses in the fan locate into (including the washers, so they have no-where to excape to). You will probably need a normal Rx servo extension lead, and the fan plug should just plug in; red to red, black to black- white/yellow is unused. it might be a tight fit, so have a dremel or exacto blade on hand to trim the fan plug as needed.

got it . thanks for the detailed info.
