Mounting my MGM Compro?

Trying to mount up my MGM Compro to an rcproductdesigns RC8 (EA8) top-plate.

I want to make sure its securely mounted since I'll be racing it on a track with some big air. So far I've used double-stick tape and a few zip ties. Not very sano looking.

Does anybody have any ideas or have successfully mounted one up securely which will hold-up with the rigors of an 8th scale track?

TIA!

bdebde 07.03.2008 10:42 AM

I use double sided tape and a zip tie. I think I have seen someone use the holes/screws for the heatsinks.

BushyAR15 07.03.2008 11:21 AM

Is it holding up to the rigors of racing? Any problems with it coming loose?

I'm just concerned of "over-cinching" down the zip-ties and cracking the circuit boards or something like that....

I also use this method w/great success on my mm esc. I bash my buggy pretty hard and have had no probs w/this set up.

coolrunnings 07.03.2008 12:50 PM

I myself am mounting mgm controls in both of my rides (losi 8ight truggy and RC8) I will attemp to mount the esc's to the chassis on both in the only spot left (the empty space on the left just behind the battery tray you know right next to the ass end of the motor. I will use a piece of the plastic spacer plate that comes with one of mikes battery trays and screw a small piece to the chassis and ziptie it to the spacer ( with my dremel I will first make some little grooves on the bottom of the spacer to allow the zipties to slide through). I hope this type of mounting will help keep the center of gravity low while protecting the esc from lid landings also it will be strapped to a hard piece of plasic hopefully allowing a little airflow under it rather than letting that bottom heatsink be mashed into a soft chunk of foam insulating it from airflow.

bdebde 07.03.2008 01:11 PM

I have mine on edge like this:

Seems to be holding up well to bashing at least. :great:

hi bdebde, could you tell me which wire to which for the mgm to a tekno bl motor cause i want to make sure nothing will happen to my first bl project! if you need to, pls take a look at the attach pics, thanks!
P.S. mine is a MGM 16018 3.23ver and with a tekno rc ed 1515 1y/f, btw pls start from the sticker side.

bdebde 07.04.2008 01:02 AM

It won't matter which wire goes to which one on the motor. If it runs backwards, just swap 2 of the wires.

satan'struck 07.04.2008 02:31 AM

thanks and will see what's up.

Hope that helps (?)..

Have a great 4th...

coolrunnings 07.04.2008 05:25 AM

Tdc57, I like the last 3 pics allot...that's a groovy aluminum mount and looks professional.

BushyAR15 07.04.2008 08:22 AM

Thanks for the advice and pics everyone! Big help!

One last question. I notice everyone has mounted it on "edge". Is it NOT recommended to set it flat on one side? I was thinking it would be more surface for mounting. I also mounted up a fan on the heat sink....

sounds like you know your shit. hey would you build me somthing cool from your surpluss and spare parts?

Next problem :(

So, I've hooked up my MGM 16024, and it doesn't appear to be working. When all hooked up, no BEC, 1515 motor, Spektrum RX, 8k 11.1 volt pack. It just sits there. I see a small red light come on momentarily then nothing.

Seems like no power is making it to the RX. There is no power to even the steering servo....

I tried using a separate power source for to the RX, a 1600 mah pack. With that attached, the steering servo goes, and the ESC's little red light flashes and the there is a "rocking" of the motor. But nothing else...

I tried downloading the update flash software. But that doesn't seem to work either. All plugged in, it says "Searching for Device". But it never finds it.

Yeah, I bought this used. Guy seems honest, but I'm not so sure anymore....

I tried different RXs, batteries, etc, but it seems its something in the ESC...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

TDC57 07.05.2008 12:47 AM

I'm assuming this is your first MGM, they are picky but worth there weight in gold.

Let’s start at the basics,

Step one, programming your radio to your ESC:
The controller switch must be off. Then plugg in the batteries into the controller. Hold full throttle and turn the switch on. Keep holding until you here 3 beeps, grab full brake until you hear 1 beep, and then move to neutral until you hear 2 beeps. Then shut everything down, hook up all necessary wires and turn it back on and go to programming on your laptop.

Step two programming mode:
This can either be accomplished by either your computer or radio, here is the computer method, if you need the radio one let me know and I’ll post it up.

Laptop programming:
I do have the USBcom+ and I have the smaller CC02 that connects to my controller port.
My computer does recognize my controller as the following:
Controller Name -16024-3Cars
Controller Version 3.14
Last Change 11/01.08

Trottle Min is @ 1.107
Neutral is not highlted?
Throttle max is @ 1.898

Number of poles is set @ 4

Now for the Usser settings! (for what it's worth)

Here are my current usurer settings
Car <=I=> (forward and backwards)
Brake / deceleration Light2 / 0.26s
Acceleration 0.26s
Timing automat
behavior when battery voltage is low going down reduce RPM
Battery type 6 Li-pol
Range of the natural zone 3%
Automatic correction of neutral No
Freewheel NO
Automatic brake in neutral light 2.

These are my current setting. Then I hit write to Data and then turn everything off and unplug.

If all else fails try the site instruction @ link:http://mgm-compro.com/manuals/en-man...1x-d160807.pdf It displays most of the options I think the instructions online are better than in the manual, so it may be worth having a read to compare them- hopefully they will make more sense

P.S.
I have the same controller!, I had to buy an external BEC to power up my RX. Here is how it looks.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2534.jpg
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...7/IMG_2723.jpg

bdebde 07.05.2008 12:51 AM

MGM 16024 has no BEC, you will need external one (or receiver pack). What software version is on your controller (small number sticker)? You will need at least 3.20 to do the update via download.

BushyAR15 07.05.2008 08:31 AM

Thanks so much! I was able to "program" my Radio to my ESC.

But still can't get my USBCOM+ to recognize my controller. I tried downloading the "Flasher" updater software, no joy....

The controller software sees the unit, but it says I need a newer version of the ESC software and to download it. But I can't based on my previous sentence.

So, if you wouldn't mind posting the way to program my ESC via the Radio, that would be SO appreciated!

When I power on the ESC via the main switch with the EPA for throttle set to max or 150%, all I get is the flashing red light. I reckon I must be in programming mode....

I guess I'm closer? Just need to be able to program the settings via the radio?

Man, I did a search based on pizzaman's suggestions and found that "$100 Reward" thread. I'm so in that boat right now.....

BTW, I noticed in that thread it says to set the "neutral" to like 9 or 12%. What is the "neutral" setting, EXP?

bdebde 07.05.2008 01:19 PM

For setting parameters, you will need to connect the controller to USBcom with cc_02 cable. For updating, you will need cc_03 cable as well as v3.0 USBcom (or higher) and v3.20 or higer in the controller. Neutral setting is like the dead band between F - R.

BushyAR15 07.05.2008 07:14 PM

Well, that explains that :) I need the cc_03 cable....

Well, I re-programmed the ESC and radio to the default.

ITS ALIVE!

So, it works, but I need to program it to the Lipo Pack and get rid of reverse.

I read through the programming section of the manual. The section about programming via your TX.

OMG! I read through it several times and don't completely understand how to do it. I understand there is repetitive steps and you have to do the same motion to get to certain parameters. But it seems one mistake and you're starting all over again...

While I don't consider myself the brightest bulb, I am college educated and have been a software engineer since programming in Assembler was done on punch cards...

Here is the way i mount my MGM 22418 in a Kyosho STRR truggy.
I drilled and thread the 4 holes in the heatsink. With 4 rubber
mounts, it is 100 % safe.
By the way, those 2 grills in front of the fans are perfect.
I have now 30 runs of +/- 15 min and no breakages...
Great MGM esc. Can hold the power without issues at all.

Mounting my MGM Compro? - 07.03.2008, 09:18 AM

hey every one im a little late on this but.... zip-ties are cool i use them alot at work, but they tend to have a short lifespan in my oppinion. plus it looks kinda hard to cinch down the mgm type controllers without risking damage. they dont apear to have a case(not sure never owned one.....yet). i donk know about most but i prefer to use shoe goo. its strong enough to hold but easily:wink: peels off a smooth surface like plastic, graphite, or aluminum. thin layer will do, the thicker the layer the more flexible its stays. best to try yorself with an old rec. or something to feel it out. i dont know has served me well for a loooooong time.

very nice set up on the mounting

coolrunnings 08.10.2008 06:32 PM

Love the strr, what lehner is that?

TRUGGYMAN 08.13.2008 04:58 PM

Lehner

The LEHNER is 1950/4 with Kv 3135: far too high.
I bought it with HI-AMP, forced COOLING & 5mm SHAFT.
It's going too quick and i cannot use it on the STRR.
I'm now using neu 1515 1.5 and i will soon try NEU 1515 1y & 2D.
My problem is runtime. With NEU lipos 4S 5000Mah 30c, i hardly
reach 15 min.
Next days with good weather will be test days.
BTW, the MGM, is perfect with all motors. Never had to complain.
