10s car controllers available?
 

I'm exploring what options are here vs. coming. I know the special Castle controllers Patrick mentioned will be the answer, but I want something before that.

-MGM, my 16018 has not been my favorite controller, so I hesitate to buy another.

-BK, I've never owned one, but they seem outdated to me. Plus I want to be able to run a 4 pole motor. I saw mention of a new version coming, but have not seen anything.

-Kontronik, I really don't know much of anything about.

-Schulze, impressive controllers, but I don't want to risk entry into Serum's gallery of shame.

Any other options or shortly forthcoming options? Keep in mind I want a true car software as I am not a fan of mechanical braking in a converted vehicle.

I might have something coming in about 2 weeks, not sure though. The 12S Castle controllers sounds nice. I'm proud to say that I've had the chance to the MGM, BK, Kontronik and Schulze. The Kontroniks are nice, specially the 55-10-32. My BK 3695 was running good, but it burned and they are limited to 2 pole motors and 42000rpm. I'm currently using a Schulze 40.160 in my BPP truggy and you can't go wrong with it, but the price is :surprised:. If you're not going to be pulling over 60A, get the 55-10-32 and if you look in other forums specially the heli or airplane forums, you can find one fairly cheap.

if you are using mechanical brakes or dont care to have brakes you can run a CC HV 110 ESC with a pistix adapter and an external BEC (It doesnt have one) and you can run up to 12s...I have thought about upgrading my Revo to a 10s-1515/2y package

Do all of the Kontronic 55-10-32 have car software, or only certain models?

Most of the Jazz do have the car mode. The 55-10-32 has it and it does the job.

I'am using a Jazz 55-10-32 and made over 400 runs with 10s1p A123 since i bought it (used it in a buggy and now in a truggy). Very reliable ESC with a max power handling of more then 2.7KW when used with a small heat sink. Eventhough it is rated for max 65A burst, i recorded Amp spikes over 100A. One drawback though. When running on tarmac (high grip) you can sometime notice that the ESC does not perfectly go to freewheeling (very short drop in rpm when releasing throttle). This behavior was more noticeable with a Neu 1515 when compared to a Neu 1512.

The ESC has two car modes. Forward, brake, reverse or only forward and brake.

Have a look at the video in my signature to see it it perform in a 11lbs truggy.

The new Jive ESCs from Kontronik are even more powerfull. They feature an integrated switching BEC (up to 12s) and are waterproof. But they only have one car mode: forward with brake.

I have had great luck with the latest MGM software (3.23), may be worth considering MGM again.

I can live without reverse. Any good place to buy Kontronics?

These guys don't have them in yet (the HV versions) and say the 12s controllers are opto:neutral:

If it shows you how frustrated I am with the controller, it's been on a shelf for the past year since getting back from MGM. While they had it they upgraded it to 2.32:lol:

Both, the LV and HV series, have BECs: Kontronik ESC overview

Unfortunately i only know european websites (german) where to look after them. Kontronik ESC are often used in RC-helicopters. Websites selling helicopter stuff may have them for sale. But with the strong Euro i supose they might be very pricey in the US.

8s is crazy, but 10s would certainly start breaking things really fast...but ii'm guessing higher voltage and a lower kv motor would give you more runtime by drawing less amps on the lipos?

lutach- have you used the 55-10-32? can you elaborate on your experiences in the 10s+ zone and which cars?

Those were made with 10S2P A123.

lutach- what's your guesstimate on the number of amps you're putting through the schulze on those runs. what else have you run on the 13lb trucks...

On my 8S/10S A123 setup i draw 65A max FWIW. Stays cool no matter how long or how hard I drive it.

Thanks for the info guys.... anyone have experience with the Kontronik Power Jazz 63V ESC - seems like a good option since it's '100% waterproof'...pricey but I think it's one of the few esc's that are waterproof, especially for the bashers that are going through snow...sure, your lipos & servos may fry but at least the ESC will be ok.

If you have mechanical brakes, it should be good.
