Brushless Hyper st pro Build
I am finally planning my truggy project. After a long time of debating I think i found everything i was looking for. I wanted the truggy itself to be top quality without killing my wallet, so me and a buddy found the Ofna Hyper st Pro kit, $450 new, not bad. Of course I will be using to rcm motor mount, if it works with this model. Once it is rereleased i will be using the monster max for this build. I found the kb45 8L motor to be quite appealing, it's a beast! I have heard great things about it, and it should be more than enough power to push along my truggy. And as long as I am ordering the motor from unitedhobbies I may as well order the other things i need, like a bettery and servo. I have heard good things about the Zippy-H 4000mah 25-35c 5s battery, so why not give it a try. And I found a decent looking servo for dirt cheap, I have no idea what to expect. All links are below:

have fun looks like a great conversion, wat pinion are oyu gonna run
|
Yes, it'll be a great conversion indeed! Now we can actually have some fun bashing at the Cub Foods BXM track and maybe at winnebagoland. We should ride on up to Green Bay and run on their huge indoor track aswell. "Biggest in the state"
BTW: Kershaw sells 6mm bored pinions. |
The KB has I believe 30mm motor mount spacing which means it won't work with mikes mount.
It also uses a 6mm shaft so you will have difficulty with pinions - You may be able to get ones that have been drilled out but I doubt they will be hard enough to last against a steel spur. That servo is good speed wise but light on torque - HS5595 are going for $80 why skimp after spending so much on a kit. PS Worth checking EBAY I picked up my ST Pro for 406 shipped |
worth pulling the shaft/rotor out and getting it machined down to 5mm ?? will save alot of headaches with pinions gears .
im watching this thread closely as i have the same truggy and motor plans in the woodwork |
Hey Act1k, Wouldnt 130oz/in be plenty for just bashing and messing around? I dont think he's going to get into any racing.
|
I have my doubts about that motor. As above with the size concerns, it sounds like the motor tends to run hot. You usually get what you pay for, and in this case I don't understand cheaping out on the motor when there are some that would work better for not much more $. Sometimes you can spend a dollar to save a dime.
I would look at getting a 9 or 10XL, or better yet a medusa 60mm motor, either a 1600 or 2000kv. The hyper mount works great, however the ST spur is quite a bit wider than the buggy 46T that the mount's spur guard is made for. PLan for this else order a smaller spur (i got a 46T, but it puts a smooth can XL right upto the rear brace. Not sure bigger motors would fit. G/L The 5955 TG is an awesome servo too. I had it in my Revo and now hyper ST. Tons and tons of TQ |

The ST is known for its buggy handling and excellent turning - If you're spending 400+ on a kit and buying a mmm I don't understand not balancing the purchase with the motor and servo.
If the intention is that these are a stop gap then no issue but experience has shown it tends to be false economy. My 2c is that I personally think you'd be better off saving $150-200 by buying a nice roller and then buying a better elecs (motor and servo). PS 132 is at 6v - the mmm is set at 5.5v so your looking more like 125. |
Well seeing how the kb45 has the wrong mounting demensions I am going to skip it. But seeing how I am making an order from unitedhobbies I may as well buy a motor that will atleast get me started untill I purchase a motor of higher quality. It seems that unitedhobbies replaced there feigaos with the new KD36 series, and customers have been having better luck. So I may as well give one a try.

The KD 9xl should be a perfect motor for the time being...
|
Thanks Takedown. I hope that motor surprises me. I am really looking forward to this project. It will be my first kit!
|
Cool. In the last few weeks there have been 5 Hyper ST conversions. Did I start a trend? (Mine, Yours, Finnster's, Arct1k's, and lincpimp's.
|
I have wanted to do a truggy conversion for the longest time. And now that I see how cheap the pro kit is, it's a no brainer. But yes, I am looking at all of these great builds for help, thank you.
|
Do you like mine? Which is your favorite?
|
They are all great, including yours. It looks like your build went smoothly. Got any pointers?
|
Yeah- before installing the polished steering plate, install the front brace.
|
Whats the one part you got messed up on and couldnt figure out?
|
Front brace...
|
Thanks for that pointer. I will be sure to do that.:yipi:
|
Yep. Also the rod that holds the rear brace in also mounts to the wing mount- the rod was too short.

The kb 45s do not really run hot from my experience, but they have alot of torque... |
So they're amp hungry beasts?
|
That was another reason I backed out of the kb45. I need my Zippy-H pack to keep up.
|
Yup.

http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1925.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF1928.jpg I can only imagine what the xl 45 motors can do. I was going to run a cc hv85 with the 10xl on 8s, and am wondering if it can keep up with the kb motor... |
I think that motor's spoon is too big.
The front diff said, "My anus is bleeding!!!!!" "Ahhhhhhwwwwwww*choke*hhhhhh*choke*hhhhh.....!!!!! " |

I would pay to see that. I still think I will have to settle for the KD36-74, the thing better have preformence with that length. lol

KB-45 10XL with HV-110 in a custom center diff Savage on 5s2p and 10s2p A123 here... That's one powerhouse of a motor. It's been holding up to abuse that broke a Feigao 12XL's magnet...
I'm currently replacing this KB-45 10XL with one of the Hobby City KD36-74 1200 kv motors, because the KB-45 is too large of a diameter to allow me to use the 3rd disc brake, and it will also allow me to use a smaller pinion. |
Please let me know what you think of that motor when you get it Metalman, I am desperate to find out the quality/preformence.
Thank you |

Are both ends on the motor clamped like the feigao's were?
|
As far as I can tell they are, but it's possible they're screwed on like the KB-45 motors. I still have to grind a flat spot on the shaft, also.
|
ok cool. Atleast those screw-on endbells can be thread locked.

I don't think that the kb45 motor would be terrible, but I think its just not the right motor for the app. 2300kv is too high for a 5S setup, esp w/ a cheap motor. I'd be looking at ~1600-1700kv. I can't imagine that thing wouldn't have to be babied to not overheat.
Also, usually larger diameter motors spool up slower, but have more TQ. That would be a great motor in an MT where you want tons of TQ for climbing and bashing, for a truggy I would want something with a faster spool up so its more responsive. Also, its a PITA if the thing has too much TQ as you don't want to either be: a) popping wheelies on the track b) diffing out badly in the F or c.) have to put really hvy oil in the CD to stop diffing out badly and F'up the turning capability My 1st revo was a wheelie monster. It was a lot of fun for a while, but got to be a pain. I had to let off the throttle just to turn as the wheels barely ever touched the ground and it was hard to accel fast as it would just pop the F end up. It was like driving a big block '72 Impala when the hyper St is more of a porsche. Not only that, it sucks having to stop and let the motor cool whenit gets hot, or worry about not being able to drive however you want for fear of overheating. "Long grass? Uh oh... I better go easy so I don't fry my motor..." My last revo was a 1515/2Y (1100kv) on 8S. Really good power but never got warm. I could drive and do anything I wanted and temps never budged. Perhaps I've just gotten spoiled, but its just liberating to be able to drive w/o worry. Hill climbs used to torture and fry lesser motors. So I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with it. If its just for bashing about and doing spd runs then its not going to matter too much. If you plan on more racing I would go with a better suited motor, or at least a lower kv, higher V setup. 5S isn't too bad tho. Like arct1k, I don't see the point of dropping all this money on a nice trugg, $200 ESC, nice batts, then low ball the powerplant. Its a tempting thing to do, and I've certainly done it before, but it seems like you end up having to spend quite alot in the end to make it work right (clamps, heatsinks, fans etc) or just end up buying a good motor in the end. Even the Medusa 60mm motors sound like a great deal, Neu-like performance at only ~$100. And made in USA. The 60mm 2000kv motor geared high should be pretty snappy, quick and reliable, or even the 1600kv on 6S should be good. Else go cheap, be easy, and wait for the 70mm medusas to come out or the CC neus for a reasonbly priced option. Wow.. that was a long post...and all just my humble opinion. :) |
Thank you very much for that long and thoughtfull opinion.
This is not going to be a race truggy unfortunatly. There is nowhere around here to race. So it will be just for bashing and speed runs. Should go well with takedowns upcomoming MBX5T.:yipi: I am most likely just going to use this motor untill I gewt around to purchase a medusa. And the motor I am getting now is 1900kv, so it should be well fitted for 5s. |
