MMMv2 was a dud

Well I got my Monster from Mike's second preorder yesterday evening, soldered everything up last night and went out to run this morning. Everything was fine for about the first 10 or so minutes then in the middle of a pass it just started coasting. I turned the switch off and back on and it worked again for a couple of seconds the quit again. The bec showed .20 volts when I checked it. What a bummer. I guess I'll have to put my v1 back in until I get another one.

lincpimp 08.27.2008 12:38 AM

Sucks to hear that Jerry. I hope to have my first V2 (3rd MMM) here by the end of the week. Going straight to 6s lipo on it, and I will torture it till it says uncle. Hope I get more than 10 mins out of it. My 1st V1 is still going strong, must be past 3 hours by now...

coolrunnings 08.27.2008 03:37 AM

Sorry for your loss...I'm suffering too. I just received my second bad control. I'm sticking with mgm.

JerryF504 08.27.2008 05:03 AM

Well, I'm a a 50% failure rate. Out of the 4 I've gotten 2 quit in 10 min or less and 2 are still working. I'm using a CCBEC on a v1 that has about 10 or so hrs on it and my first v2 is working perfectly with no mods except a little tape on the fan wires. I've been hammering on it everyday with 5 and 6s and have had no problems so far with it. Maybe it just depends how lucky you are?

coolrunnings 08.27.2008 05:15 AM

I have never been lucky in my life...I get where I'm going on pure piss and vinegar.

Luck isn't needed if you're skilled like me.

So the problems are still not addressed during my absence?

Well, it does act different than my first v1 that failed. This one will work again if you cycle the switch or unplug the battery. My first Monster wouldn't come back to life at all. I tried unplugging the ESC from the receiver to see if it would work with no load but it still quit after about 30 seconds. The v2 also communicates with the Castle Link whereas the v1 wouldn't.

I would like to go on the record and personaly thank Patrick for letting his customer's do the Beta Testing.I wonder how much money he's saving letting us do the Beta Testing and svrewing over his customer's,instead of making an ESC that work's we have more duds than working unit's,and instead of me being able to enjoy myself on the weekend or after work by going out and Bashing my truck now all I can do is use it for a very very costly paper weight. You Da man Patrick You Da man.Seeing as that you are letting your customers do the Beta Testing for you and letting us iron out the bug`s and seeing it is customary that Beta Testers get paid by the company they test for do you want to discuss my fee now or later.

if you have no need for motor braking ( mechanical brakes or dont care about braking) a CC HV110 will make a good ESC

CRTIM 08.30.2008 01:25 AM

man o man ...i just recieved mine today....you guy's are making me nervous.....i hope i don't have the problems i'm seeing a lot of guys on here are

You're right.
I've a V2 who'll suppose to arrive next week and i'am very nervous to try it.
I've fried a MGM 16018 last week-end, and if my MMM goes bad too, i'll simply stop the electric and return nitro. I can't imagine to have a $1000.00 + brushless truck and always wait for the controller.

I'll return nitro and when a companies will finaly came with a true reliable controller, i'll maybe re-start with brushless.

plettenbergs 08.30.2008 08:32 AM

nitro is not without issue!i have 3 UE nitro trucks that are a huge pain in the ass!....always tuning,tuning,tuning...that is why i went,BL!...now its batts,batts,batts!....my 50" BONZI(gas boat) with Quickdraw is the most friendly!!!...but then i have a lake next to my house:yes:

Yes nitro is tuning, tuning and tuning, but when you got the tune, you're right, and don't have to be scared that something of $200.00 explode in your truck. And if your nitro engine died, you simply order another one and you're OK for a while.

And for the gasoline boat, you're right, i've an HPI baja SS with a Zenoha 25.4 race ported, and i simply put gas on it, pull the cord twice and i've fun for an hour:yipi:

plettenbergs 08.30.2008 08:38 AM

GOOD TIMES!!......(the definition of INSANITY):doing the same things over and over and expecting differant results???????(MMM)

david lamontagn 08.30.2008 09:21 AM

Anyways, i'am sure that CC will make another version (V3) with all the tips and trics that lot of guys here (like BrianG) give on the forum.

So if CC take all the idea give here, i'am sure that the MMM will finish to be reliable in a neer future.

The MM is reliable, so why the MMM can't.

I understand your frustration..if the new MMM isn"t succesful don't feel like you have to sell your BL gear but take a break from it for a while and run your Baja...and once things have stabilized go back to it...I have actually let an RC sit for a year or 2 before wanting to deal with it again

maybe you're right. But i've buy the best stuff for my e-revo (MGM, Neu motor and TP li-po) to buy the peace of mind, and my controller have burn for any reasons, and MGM are suppose to be way better than CC, so probably i'll try the MMM, but if something turn bad, NEVER i'll buy another controller for a while.

As you say, i'll take a LLLLLOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG brushless brake.
And if a good day we have the chance to have a solid controller, i'll re-take a chance to spend my money on no-were, and hope that this time will be the good one.

maybe i'll modify my son Stampede and run it with my thrusty MM.

GT35R 08.30.2008 11:18 AM

I've been using a $60 ESC with 6s Lipos no problems at all. Its just that it doesn't have proportional brakes (air/boat esc). If my MMM turns out to be no good I'll go back to that and just wait until something proven comes along, if thats the MMM V3 then great,
but no more preordering for me. And when people say its too cheap at $160, well its not if it doesn't work properly is it? Heck, I was happy running a single velineon in my E-maxx on 3s anyway.
I do feel bad for Castle though, I'm sure it sucks for them and they would want nothing but for everyone to be happy with their MMM's.

david lamontagn 08.30.2008 11:21 AM

Can you tell me what's your $60.00 controller who can supporte 6s??
If he can take over 200amps, i'll buy one for my e-revo:wink:

GT35R 08.30.2008 11:47 AM

sorry its a 100A controller from hobbycity. 200A @ 22V = broken drivetrain surely :oh:
There is a 12S version too.

BrianG 08.30.2008 12:07 PM

I'm a bit skeptical of these no-name ESC current claims. Sure, the FET could technically be rated at 200A, but that's probably best case scenario with optimum temps (no temperature derating figured in), with 200mph airflow. Not to mention; can the PCB circuit traces support those kinds of currents? Also, air ESCs hardly ever have the burst headroom that a car ESC does.

George16 08.30.2008 12:20 PM

At least his no-name ESC is working.

GT35R 08.30.2008 12:21 PM

Well they are 100A rated, not 200A and yes they don't have the burst capabilty. But they are huge and work very well to their ratings and I believe those ones may be the very same ESC's that Hacker supply.
Unfortunately they are only of limited use in car applications so I only recommend if you know what you're doing.

George16 08.30.2008 12:26 PM

What brand is it?

Is it this one?

David
if you want brakes you will need to run mechanical brakes and you will have no reverse with an air ESC, I have one for my latest project...and if you use a pistol Tx you will need a Pistix adapter here are a few links to what I have

Hv110 esc

Pistix adapter

Metalman had a previous post where he ran an HV110 in a BL Savage had got very good results

Yes thats the one I have, the 6S version (didn't really want to post direct link here).

Pistix is not needed, it will calibrate with a pistol controller.

George16 08.30.2008 12:59 PM

It should be worth a try since it's only $65 plus shipping.

Been there, done that, Fried it. It did last a while just like the Mamba Max did. Funny how they all smell the same.

RC4Life 08.31.2008 04:39 AM

Well seeing as tha Patrick was online today and does not want to show p in this thread and answer my orignal post on page one I guess that means we won't be seeing any cheque's in the mail from castle for being there Beta tester's for the MMM.I would like to tell Patrick if you going to except your customer's to do the Beta testing for you it may be a good idea to tell the that in advance as I boughta MM on day one and never even got a thank or a nice card for all the free Beta testing I did for you.

Gallagher 08.31.2008 07:24 AM

After seeing all these failure cases of MMM and there is bad news emerging everyday,
I am not expecting my MMM v2 which is already been shipped anymore. Although the chance is minimum, I would like to ask is there any possibility to prevent the failure?
Perhaps, the best way is to sell it when it comes intact.
