So the Pimp just killed a V2...

While my V1 is still going strong, I just had a V2 die on me. It is in a lst with a hacker c50 11xl running 6s lipo. Gearing is 24/59 with the FOC tranny gearing swap. I had run it for about 15mins, landed a jump and it died.

Weird, you could switch it off and then back on and the lights would flash and beep, but when pulling the trigger it would completely die. I tried it with a rec pack and the red wire pulled and it worked for a few seconds. Is this the common BEC failure that everyone reports?

I will say that it was super powerful when it was running. I pulled about 2000mah in 10mins, but the esc was staying cool, fan would come on for a few seconds every few minutes. Motor was around 150f during both runs. Killer setup, really fun!!

I will have to call CC on monday and see if they will send me a replacement with a return mailer...

jhautz 09.06.2008 08:46 PM

I had a V2 die on me yesterday and a V1 today. This is getting a bit silly at this point.

david lamontagn 09.06.2008 08:56 PM

Incredible, CC is in a big tunel.
For me, i return with 1/10 scale until CC solve his problem:whip:

All the MMM with BEC issue started with this or either weak servo response then dies (except those that when into a great ball of fire)...I really think its not a IC failure rather than a design flaw...IC failure under load

whoa mike calm down..

i was on the phone with CC yesterday, said they have had about 80 problems with the bec our of the 300+ v2's after the re-design

e-mike 09.06.2008 10:07 PM

sorry,,,so here the mmm v2 cost 200$(canadian)and i have ti pay 20$ in custom fee and 25$ more to ship the esc when it failed,,,,,you see why im tired .....:bad:

on 300 unit 80 failed?????and what mean RE-DESING''

TexasSP 09.06.2008 10:10 PM

He meant 80 out of 3000, not 300.

the fact that you have to pay for customs has nothing to do with the phyiscal price of the esc, just location

and yes out of the 3000 V2s from the last production run.

Mine failed too, and its not as if it doesnt happen to any thing else,....cars have recalls
stuff breaks, you cant expect perfection 100% of the time with no failure rate, it just dont happen

Edit- and yes RE DESIGN, would you have rather had a bad v1 which had double the failure rate and have your whole truck burn to the ground

cheesecake 09.06.2008 10:16 PM

and mine failed

ravin 09.06.2008 10:24 PM

wow I feel good my mmm v1 is still going strong.

e-mike 09.06.2008 10:28 PM

the v1 have more failure.:whip:...dam im lucky....i have 3 v1 and stil running good so far...

like you said 80 failure on 3000 unit isn't bad vs the v1(i dont know how many was made)

SpEEdyBL 09.06.2008 10:31 PM

Just by speculation it appears that dirt can easily get trapped in the esc through the fan vents and short something out. This is what happened to a brushed esc of mine. It deosn't seem like this would be causing bec failure, but who knows? Maybe the bec is most vulnerable. From reading, far too many people are having repeated problems and far too few seem to get the problems solved with a different MMM. If the failure rate is 1 out of 10 (just to make the math simple and castle claims its way less than that), then its 1 out of 100 for someone to have two failed MMM V2 and for the people who had three failed MMMs V2, thats 1 out of 1,000. I'm not saying its user error, but the conditions the MMMs are run/setup in that could be causing problems.

I think you should and everyone else should look at it from both side's,if ther was a company in Canada and everyone from the State's had to send there stuff to Canada to get repaired and the product was a must have item and when it came out and it was loaded with problem's you mean to tell me you would'nt be upset and Bitching of course you would.Think of it like this I don't mind the fact that I have to send it back to Castle but it's the waiting game and it's not the time custom's hold's the stuff at the boarder it is how long the method of shipping take's and when you ask if you are willing to pay the difference in the cost and being told there's no policy,I don't know about anyone else from Canada but I'm not trying to sound like a Cry Baby,it just get's sickening listen to guy's like you who olny look at it from your side and know the you would be complaining alot if the role's were reversed. My Dad has a Company and I have to order stuff from Japan and Germany for him sometime's and all I know is this why when I can choose the slowest way to send it to Canada it take's around 6 to 7 day's to arrive at the door even Patrick told me in a PM that the slowest shipping method from usps get to China faster than Canada. When I track Shippment's it tells you when it enter's and leave's custom's and it is anywhere from a 3 hour to 2 day wait before it is released. And yes I know it's my choice to deal or not deal with Castle but they could at least do something to address this issuse.

No i wouldnt be upset, how can i be, you know from the beginning anything from the US MUST go through customs, you know its coming and you know that its gonna take time... just like you KNOW that i will take time to have the esc repaired or replaced. i waited 4 weeks for my MMM intially and then it fried 10 mins later- im not mad. i happens sometime we all just need to deal with it

wade7575 09.06.2008 11:30 PM

Ok I think your missing the point custom's has nothing to do with it,I know it is going to have to go threw Custom's.We don't get return shipping as Canada Post won't accept a USPS Shipping Label at the Post office to return the product.I have been in the RC Hobby for more than 17 year's and have ordered alot of stuff and sent my share back for repair under warranty, now all I know sis this before it ever hit's custom's using USPS Prioirty Mail it can take 3 weeks to reach custom's,now using the same method to ship to China takes around 5 to 8 days tell me where the sense is in that. When a package can go farther in a lot less time using the same shipping method and does not do anything to fix the problem that's messed up and no I'm not saying Castle won't try to fix it but when aperson s willing to pay the difference and they say no that's messed up as well and I was never told it would take this long before I got my MMM.Plus when I move up one class in shipping threw USPS from Prioirty to express and it takes olny 3 to 5 days with express tht's really messed up whenit takes 3 weeks sometime's when using Priority shipping.

lincpimp 09.07.2008 03:39 AM

Amazing, 2 pages of bitching...

I would like to say that the 2nd V2 that I put in is still going strong, at the 15min mark...!

After having read all post, you're right, that's what i think too:oh:

phatmonk 09.07.2008 08:49 AM

How much rough driving, jumps bums etc can the MMM V2 handle.I Had my 3rd MMM V1 die after a jump also. But ofcourse it was replaced by a MMM V2.Since then I have hesitated any big jumps. After all these 1/8 brushless havent realy been around long enough to evaluate the effect of a 8 lb 1/8 brushless buggies effect on delicate electronics in a ESC.Losi addvertises that their ESC mount has a shock absorbing
base.Just something to think about.

MTBikerTim 09.07.2008 08:58 AM

I just got a shipping notification for my 5th MMM. My setup seems to kill them pretty quickly and it has always seemed to be a bec failure. I'm going to run it with a CC BEC and see if it lasts any longer this time. My setup is a 6s setup as well but it is pulling a lot less power then yours I think linc.

mohanjude 09.07.2008 09:12 AM

I am not going to wade into this ongoing arguement to flame Castle as I like their products. I have had many Mamba 25 units for the 1/18 scales, mamba max for the 1/10 scale. Using my past experience I ordered x3 Mamba Monster Max and they are sitting brand new in the box unopened - Why? Because I am scared to 'break' them.

I have never purchased a piece of RC equipment and worried about it failing prematurely. If I use the same logic on all my RC gear I should worry about Receivers dying, Gyros failing in $4K Turbine helicopters, speed controllers failing in the large electric models traveling at 70 mph. I have over a dozen of of the ESC's from MGM, BK, schulze and Quark - they too have failed 'occasionally' I am not scared of using them or even abusing them. I am too scared to get the MMM out of the box!!! Maybe if I disable the BEC, use 2S lipo and use a 24 turn motor and run the truck at 5mph I might be OK.

The problem here is that Castle released the V1 and found out it had issues. fair enough that can happen to any company. Then after a considerable delay they released V2 - in the four weeks it has been out it has received a lot of negative presss. Please don't forget this is exactly how the problems with V1 happened. So for those people who want to either live in hope or denial keep this in mind that things may not be all ok. Who knows - time will tell. When you walk into a shop and purchase a Ipod, mobile phone or whatever electronic device for your PC (graphic cards/ processors/,memory) you are not immediately thinking of sending it back after 'playing' with it for 15-30 mins. Lets face it a ESC only works for 20-30 mins contiously at a time - that is minuscule compared to the hours we have all the toys working in our daily lives.

Having to return stuff for repair and wait for weeks is not what the hobby is about. It is about enjoying and relaxing - about creating and innovating. Having to worry about the stress of premature failure, return for repair and worrying if the repaired unit will fail is in my book something I can do without. There are plenty of other things one can do with several hundred dollars invested in the hobby for each truck that can be spent with less stress. Next time you buy that 42 inch plasma screen think about how long you expect it to work out of the box. So I think it is only fair that people from both sides of the arguement see each others view.

TruckBasher 09.07.2008 09:29 AM

Nice one mohanjude... perfect logic...I hope both parties will understand each other....its not the setup/user nor the company.....its the product that needs to be rethink..i dont hate CC...I will still buy products from them...but i think enough of the MMM for me...i dont think replacing parts will fix this failure...it needs to be redesigned....I will revert back to MM (I am yet to finish a smaller E-Revo/Slayer so MM should be enough to handle it) or with the new Baja 5T i might go back to gas powered vehicle again.....while waiting for a true 1/8 scale MT ESC (not bulletproof but something that last long enough for everyone to enjoy)......

I was told the ESCs will be shipping out on Monday. If there's any delays I'll let you all know, but I hope they can ship it out. So tonight we will find out.

Well put. I will say that if you have 3 MMMs then one will most likely be fine. You may have to kill the other 2 to find it though!!!

I have 3 of them, a V1 that is going strong, and 2 V2s. The 2nd V2 seems to be doing fine. My 1st V2 did die after a decent sized jump... And my V1 has some high density foam installed for "pcb suspension"!

I have so many r/cs that it really does not matter if I break most of them. I find wrenching just as relaxing as bashing. I will say that my aftershock is not taking the abuse very well. Time to upgrade to lst2 spec arms and hubs. Pity, as the truck is only 45mins old, and I am already upgrading it....

MTBikerTim 09.07.2008 08:24 PM

Linc get rpm arms. The lst2 arms break just as easy, well almost. The other lst2 parts should be ok but they still break.

And as far as the MMM is concerned "Blow'em up and send them back" is my motto. If everyone leaves them sitting in the box castle will never know they have an issue still. I'm in Australia too so shipping is costing me but even with all the shipping costs the car is costing me less then it would if it was running.

I ripped apart a rear toe link, so the lst2 setup looks alot better. I will most likely get the rpm arms after I break some of the stock arms. Looks like I can get a great deal on all of the parts necessary to do the swap. I have not damaged an arm yet, but it is just a matter of time...

MTBikerTim 09.07.2008 08:33 PM

My friend was running the LST2 front and rear ends but kept breaking A arms, front toe links and front knuckles. He went rpm a arms and 8t toe links or muggy ones (can't remember exactly but they are off another losi) but he is still breaking the knuckles all the time.

The pimp should have his speed controller in check like his hoe's. You need to get your pimp hand stronger kid.

I will have to check out the muggy links (friend has one) and see if they are beefier. The Lst ones look pretty wimpy, and the ball ends break (plastic tears around the ball). Anyone make good al knuckles? Is there a good brand of al hopups? Not interested in the arms or bulks, but the knuckles look like a good thing to have in 7075 or something like that...

I may have to take you to the "Gun Show" as you obviously have no idea whats going on:yes:

I just asked him what knuckles he wants and they are the new era ones. I asked why and he said because they are the best. I still don't know why but it's worth looking at.
